Aledo Ladycats junior guardKelcie Childs was consumed withsadness as tears streaked down herface after a five-match loss to theCanyon-Randall Lady Raiders inthe Div. II-4A volleyball RegionalTournament.
But those tears eventually driedand Childs was back in uniform thenext day on her home court playing basketball. And just to prove shehad gotten over that volleyball loss, the 5’6” player wearing No. 10 leapt beneath the left side of the basketand gently lifted the ball for a layup with 4.2 seconds on the clock for thefinal basket of the game.
The final bucket helped theLadycats defeat the visiting DecaturLady Eagles 59-40 and gave Aledoa win for their home opener of the2010-2011 season.
“We’re going to spread the floor
and we’re going to attack off thedribble,” Aledo Head Coach Rusty Johnson said after the Nov. 13 vic-tory. “I think that when we get afterit defensively, you’ll see us go intospurts offensively.”
The Ladycats wasted no time ingetting points on the board early.Senior guard Logan Mittie shot athree-pointer two-minutes and 47-seconds into the first quarter to give Aledo its first field goal of the sea-son.
Decatur, who initially movedfast on defense, which in turnedpressured the Ladycats into havinginconsistent passes, crawled back totie the game at five, but additional
points from Mittie, fellow seniorguard Shelby Stockard, and juniorguards Kaitlyn Jackson and CaileenTallant put Aledo ahead by seven,16-9, at the end of the first quarter.
“Everyone did really well,” Tallantsaid. “I think around the end of thefirst quarter, we started doing what we normally do.”
Tallant finished the game witha total of seven points. Stockardracked up 15 points by the end of the night.
The shots kept on coming andthe points began to collect for theLadycats. Aledo kept Decatur at ninepoints almost halfway through thesecond quarter until the Lady Eaglesscored two-points with 4:37 on theclock making the score 24-11.
Aledo was beginning to get into agroove on offense completing passesconsistently and keeping a steady pace, but it was the team’s defense, which atone point held a 30-13 lead, that wasshowing signs of inconsistency.
“Conditioning, still, I think is apart of it,” Johnson said. “It’s some-thing we can certainly address atpractice. I think we did get fatigued
a little bit.”The veteran Mittie also saw a
need for improvement on defense.“We’re inconsistent when it
comes to the length of time we canplay defense,” she said. “I think if weget our stamina up in practice, get alittle more conditioning in, we’ll get better at it.”
The Ladycats led 31-15 at half-time and after a short break, theLady Eagles came back in the thirdquarter to be within 10 points of
Aledo. Decatur put up five points tocut the Aledo lead to 31-21.
“We’re getting lazy on defense,”Johnson shouted to his players onthe court. “Why?”
