Q Back -to-back wins in three-day span totals 121 points By Dominic Genetti The Community News  Aledo Ladycats junior guard Kelcie Childs was consumed with sadness as tears streaked down her face after a ve-match loss to the Canyon-Randall Lady Raiders in the Div. II-4A volleyball Regional Tournament. But those tears eventually dried and Childs was back in uniform the next day on her home court playing  basketball. And just to prove she had gotten over that volleyball loss, the 5’6” player wearing No. 10 leapt  beneath the left side of the basket and gently lifted the ball for a layup  with 4.2 seconds on the clock for the nal basket of the game. The nal bucket helped the Ladycats defeat the visiting Decatur Lady Eagles 59-40 and gave Aledo a win for their home opener of the 2010-2011 season. “We’re going to spread the oor and we’re going to attack off the dribble,” Aledo Head Coach Rusty Johnson said after the Nov. 13 vic- tory. “I think that when we get after it defensively, you’ll see us go into spurts offensively.” The Ladycats wasted no time in getting points on the board early. Senior guard Logan Mittie shot a three-pointer two-minutes and 47- seconds into the rst quarter to give  Aledo its rst eld goal of the sea- son. Decatur, who initially moved fast on defense, which in turned pressured the Ladycats into having inconsistent passes, crawled back to tie the game at ve, but additional points from Mittie, fellow senior guard Shelby Stockard, and junior guards Kaitlyn Jackson and Caileen Tallant put Aledo ahead by seven, 16-9, at the end of the rst quarter. “Everyone did really well,” Tallant said. “I think around the end of the rst quarter, we started doing what  we normally do.” Tallant nished the game with a total of seven points. Stockard racked up 15 points by the end of the night. The shots kept on coming and the points began to collect for the Ladycats. Aledo kept Decatur at nine points almost halfway through the second quarter until the Lady Eagles scored two-points with 4:37 on the clock making the score 24-11.  Aledo was beginning to get into a groove on offense completing passes consistently and keeping a steady pace,  but it was the team’s defense, which at one point held a 30-13 lead, that was showing signs of inconsistency. “Conditioning, still, I think is a part of it,” Johnson said. “It’s some- thing we can certainly address at practice. I think we did get fatigued a little bit.” The veteran Mittie also saw a need for improvement on defense. “We’re inconsistent when it comes to the length of time we can play defense,” she said. “I think if we get our stamina up in practice, get a little more conditioning in, we’ll get  better at it. The Ladycats led 31-15 at half- time and after a short break, the Lady Eagles came back in the third quarter to be within 10 points of  Aledo. Decatur put up ve points to cut the Aledo lead to 31-21. “We’re getting lazy on defense,” Johnson shouted to his players on the court. “Why?” BASKETBALL Ladycats start season with convincing wins His words clearly did some- thing for his players. Mittie began to put more points on the board as did Tallant and freshman Megan  Wood. The Ladycats nished the quarter with a 44-29 lead and kept a large lead throughout the rest of the game. Decatur added 11 points in the fourth quarter and Aledo gained 13 before the nal buzzer sounded. Mittie nished the game with a total of 27 points. Wood and junior guard  Alanna Martin nished the night  with four points a piece. “We need to work on our defense,  but overall I think it was a good rst game,” Mittie said. Ladycats go full strength against Lady Rebs  With another volleyball season in the books, the Ladycats were able to go full force for their second game of the season Tuesday (Nov. 16) when they faced the Birdville-Richland Lady Rebs at the Aledo High School gymnasium. The Ladycats held the Lady Rebs to one basket the entire rst quarter and were able to keep them at bay from gaining more than 10 points for almost an entire half.  Aledo led 17-2 at the end of the rst quarter and 36-14 at halftime.
