THE opening two rounds ofthe Kraft Nabisco broughtto mind two thoughts:
what must Michelle Wie havebeen thinking as she playedalongside Lydia Ko; and is 15years of age too young to beplaying sport at the top level?
On the first question, it isimpossible to imagine Wie didnot reflect on the past decadeand wonder if she should havedone things differently. Shewas once Ko, the schoolgirlsensation who had the gameat her feet at the age of 15.
And now she is ranked 86 inthe world, over 60 placeslower than Ko... who admitsWie is her idol. That is enoughto make anyone reflect anddwell on things – and probablyfeel a little ‘past it’. Wie is 23.
She and Ko played the firsttwo rounds together at MissionHills and although Wie edgedthe youngest by a couple ofshots, she finished two behindher come Sunday.
Ko is clearly hugely talentedbut does it feel correct for herto be playing such top-levelsport at such a young age? Isher playing partner in 2013’sopening Major not living proofthat too much too young isdetrimental – certainly in thesporting arena if not life terms?Or is that an out-of-date theorybased on a few high-profileexamples of ‘burn out’?
We tend to think not, butwould be interested to hearyour views. Please do let usknow in the usual fashion.

IDID a lot of different sportsgrowing up. I have a verysporting family; I have twobrothers. I was just really
sporty and then I did a lot ofteam sports, but theneventually when I started toplay golf, I felt like it was on myown terms and I could practisewhenever I wanted. It wasbasically up to me how good Iwanted to be.
My life changed a little bitafter the Major in 2009. I hada little bit more to do, a littlebit more attention, which hasbeen really fun. It's a greatlearning experience for me.
Knowing that you're gettinginto tournaments took offsome pressure because you'regoing to be able to make yourschedule for the year.
On the Saturday night it washard not to think about golf, that's for sure and I had a hardtime to fall asleep.
Once I got to the course, Ifelt pretty calm, even thoughthere were nerves in there, Ifelt pretty calm.
I started out the year with aconditional card, and then itwas really tough to get intotournaments. In the beginning Itried to Monday-qualify for afew but I didn't get in.
I mean, it was really tough tobe on site and not getting toplay, you really are wanting toplay, and you know you areplaying solid, but you didn'tget in. I think that was a reallygood experience and makesme keep working hard.
I was really nervous as aSolheim rookie in 2009. I didn'treally know what to expectinside the ropes. The key I thinkis to just try to keep your own
pace and keep your owntempo even though you havea lot of adrenaline. I think that'swhat I learned. You have toreally pace yourself to saveenergy for when you reallyneed it. But just being in ateam environment, I think thathelps everyone really getmotivated and really getinspired.
Ever since I came out onTour in 2009, Annika(Sorenstam) hasbeen mentoringme. I practisea lot at her
academyin Orlando, where I live. She's just been agreat support, helping me gothrough a lot ofthings and withadvice here andthere.
I always said Iwanted to belike Juli Inksterone day. Sheis a mom,she is 51,and she isout hereand still
competing. It's a greatopportunity anytime you get toplay with her.
I watched her a lot growingup and just to walk alongside
her on the fairwaysand try to learnand catch alittle bit of herbrain is just sucha goodopportunity forme to get better.

Mickey WalkerLooking back to the golden – or not so golden – days on tour
Ihave just enjoyedwatching the firstwomen’s Major of theyear – the Kraft Nabisco –
and the the first men’s – theMasters – at fabulous venues,Mission Hills in California, andthe iconic Augusta National inGeorgia respectively.
I can well recall in the earlydays of my professional careerplaying on courses thatnowadays wouldn’t beconsidered suitable to host aprofessional tournament, letalone a Major championship!
In 1979 when the thenWomen’s Professional GolfAssociation was formed, webarely had enough players tomake up a minimum field of30 players, and were gratefulfor any sponsorship that wehad or to any golf course thatwanted to host our events!
Of course, we played onsome top-rated courses suchas Southport & Ainsdale,Woburn and Moor Park, whichhosted the British Women’sOpen Championship.
But we didn’t get to playthose sort of courses week inweek out. The main thing wasthat the courses where we didplay welcomed us andwanted us to be there. Therewasn’t a question of us or oursponsor paying them to hostour tournaments. The clubsand the players were mutuallyhappy with the arrangement.
Of course, we played somegems, such as Caldy, on theWirral, and during the first threeyears of the WPGA, Carlsbergsponsored a series of events –12 in year one, 10 in thesecond year and three largerevents in 1981.
All were played on excellentprivate members’ courses andseveral on recognised
championship courses, suchas St Pierre, Moortown andGleneagles – albeit on theGlendevon course which onlysurvived for a few years.
We also regularly played atRoyal Portrush, one of NorthernIreland’s finestlinks courses asRory, Darrenand GMac willall testify.
During thoseearly years, wealso played onseveral public courses –Eastleigh in Hampshire,Middlesbrough Municipal andHaigh Hall in Manchester. Thenin the mid-80s the tourbecame much moreEuropean rather than solelyBritish.
In general there weren’tmany spectators. In fact, I canremember playing with MurielThomson from Scotland, oneof the top British players at thetime, but someone who couldhear a pin drop a hundred
feet away, at HillBarn in Sussex. One of Muriel’s(and mostplayers’) pethates was malespectators whoput their hands
in their pockets and jingledtheir loose change, and as thiswas a totally unconscious act, they had no idea that theywere doing it! Well, if a manfollowing Muriel did it, first of allthey would get one of herstares and if that didn’t have
the desired effect a few wordscured them from putting theirhands in their pockets for life!
On this occasion at Hill Barnjust as Muriel was about totake the club back, a noisethat sounded distinctly like theaforementioned man rattlinghis change occurred.
Muriel stepped away fromher shot ready to give the manone of her infamous looks onlyto see that it was actually adog with a metal collarshaking his head! Both Murieland I were in hysterics!
I would say that evennowadays as the standard ofplay has improveddramatically from the earlydays of the women’s tour, there are only a handful oftournaments that get greatcrowds. We always getfantastic crowds in Swedenand generally for the RicohWomen’s British Open, butobviously less so when it’splayed in places such asCarnoustie.
I believe that a number offactors affect attendance atBritish tournaments.
One is the fact that LauraDavies is still the biggest drawin British women’s golf. That isn’ta slight on Laura – she’s still afantastic player and veryexciting to watch, it’s just thatas she approaches 50, I wouldhope that we’d have anothersuperstar to take her place.
We have a lot of good Britishplayers, but no-one tochallenge the best in the world– yet!
We have some potentiallyworld-class European players, but that’s not the same assupporting home-growngolfers. Everyone loved it whenCatriona Matthew won theRicoh at Royal Lytham & St

Annes in 2009 and furtherback still in 2004 when KarenStupples won the thenWeetabix Women’s BritishOpen at Sunningdale.
It most definitely helps whenthe public know about you. This comes about oftenthrough seeing players ontelevision. It is welldocumented that Sir NickFaldo was inspired to take upgolf after watching JackNicklaus win our Open ontelevision. Television allowsthe viewer form an opinionabout your personality, andwhether they love or loatheyou, they will then be inclinedto follow your progress.
Although it’s still possible tofollow a player with all themedia and social networksavailable these days, it’s somuch easier and more likelythat we might be attractedto a sport or person if we canswitch on our TVs and seethem.
One of the things thathappens with everyprofessional tournament inAmerica is that thetournaments have anassociation with a charity –usually a local one.
That has happenedoccasionally in the UK, but
the only time it has everbeen a big success waswhen McDonalds sponsoredtheir tournament atGleneagles. The event got alot of McDonald’s suppliers topay to play in the Pro-Amprior to the tournament withall the proceeds going toRonald McDonald Charitablecauses.
The association was alsopromoted by CatherinePanton Lewis – theMcDonald’s tournamentorganiser, who spoke at clubsthroughout Scotland tospread awareness of thetournament, which increasedthe number of spectators, volunteers and in turn howmuch was raised for thecharities.
It always helps of coursewhen an event stays at thesame venue for a number ofyears, as the Ford LadiesClassic did at Woburn and asthe McDonald’s WPGAChampionship did atGleneagles.

Madeleine WinnettA fairytale ending to the Masters
HOW wonderful thatthe abiding imagefor me of the 2013Masters will be of
Angel Cabrera and AdamScott walking off the 20thgreen arm in arm. Can youimagine my favourite figure ofscorn – Mr scowling, spitting, swearing Woods – ever puttinghis arm round the waist of theman who had just beaten himin a play off? Absolutely not!
After the travesty of the rulesdebacles that had completelyovershadowed the golf, it wasso good to have a positiveimage to end on. Like many, Iwas incensed that the rulesofficials chose to dish out theirfirst one-shot penalty for slowplay in 17 years to a hapless14-year-old amateur.
Slow play is a shockingproblem – far more apparentif you go to watch
tournaments live thanwatching them on TV wherethe cameras can just switch tothe next piece of action.
Five-hour rounds werefrowned upon, which thenbecame five and a half, andescalated to six hours at theMasters. Apparently, that wasthe pace everyone wasplaying at, and young TianlangGuan wasn’t holding anyoneup behind him. I was about to
say that bullies always pick onweak targets, but then I lookedup the definition of a bully inthe Oxford dictionary: “Hiredruffian; blusterer; browbeater;man who lives on prostitute’searnings…” – so not even I ambrave enough to use thatphrase any more!
Seasoned professionals, whoare notoriously slow, simplybypass the threat of sanctionsby speeding up when they areon the clock, and then slowdown again immediately afterthe threat has gone. Whatwould work better would be tohave a time keeper with everygroup for the whole round.
There would be plenty ofvolunteers for the job at everytournament, so that wouldn’tbe a problem providingnumbers.
I would also cut the amountof discussion time with caddies
down considerably. You knowthe yardage, you know how faryou hit each club, and youknow if it’s a one-club, or two-club wind, so just get on with it– a bit like the player I love tohate so much when selectingthe place to drop his ball forhis best advantage. He didn’twaste any time striding backfrom the dropping zone hedidn’t like, to a spot vaguely inthe vicinity of where he playedhis last shot from, plus a fewfringe benefits.
Surprisingly, for one whowatches every shot or putt ofTiger’s with the accompanyingshouts of “get in the water” or“miss it”, I didn’t agree that heshould disqualify himself.
The rules officials made theirdecision, and he followed it.Who wouldn’t? But they shouldbe crucified for not getting itright in the first place. They

reviewed the footage, saw thathe had dropped the ballincorrectly, and did notintervene to impose theobligatory two-shot penaltythere and then. That was thetravesty, irrespective of thefarcical rule bending thatsubsequently followed.
But, in the end, the boy whoevery girl wants to take hometo meet her mother won. Thevaliant cuddly knight whowouldn’t have been out ofplace as Richie Cunningham’sfather in ‘Happy Days’ wasrunner up. The evil prince wasdefeated. And the innocentnew rising star managed toprevail to make the cut andtake the leading amateurhonours despite the bestattempts of the nasty men ingreen to thwart him. As fairytales go, I’d say that was apretty good ‘they all livedhappily ever after’ ending!
Madeleine Winnett• Lady Golfer’s equipment expert isa Staffordshire county player andnever short of a forthright opinionon the game!
Winter warmthIf like me you have spentthe entire winter andspring huddled undermore and more layers inan attempt to keep warmon the golf course, youmight like to try an entirelydifferent approach.Apparently, the Indians ofTierra del Fuego – locatedat the southern tip ofSouth America, nearAntarctica – wore noclothes at all to protectthemselves from the sleet-filled air and icy waters.
Now I have scoured thedress code at the club, and although it stipulatesthat if I am wearing a shirt,it must have a collar, itdoesn’t seem to mentionanywhere that you mustwear clothes in the firstplace!

WITH less thanfour monthsuntil Europe’sfirst Solheim
Cup defence for eight yearsthe countdown is well and trulyon.
As things stand, four of theEuropeans in the automaticqualifying spots would berookies and, from the winning2011 side, the likes of MelReid, Laura Davies, CarolineHedwall and Sophie Gustafsonwould all need one of LottaNeumann’s four picks.
Behind the scenes, things are
far more advanced and theSwede has already chosen theoutfits, picked the brains of2011 skipper Alison Nicholasand chosen the menus andplaylist for the team bus.
We speak as Neumann is onher way to Phoenix to play in aLegends Tour event and, asever, she is charm personified.
She sadly lost her father overthe new year but she remainsgiggly, fun and down to earth.
Whatever happens in Denverin the middle of August, yoususpect that Neumann willhandle it beautifully.

How are preparations going? Everything is going good, I geta lot of help from the LET andI’m just putting together myschedule to get out to andchat with some of the girls at afew events. I’ll go to the Kraftand maybe a day at the KiaClassic in San Diego and thenI’ll be looking to go to theevent in Germany in May andthen the US Open.
And then of course theBritish Open.
How have you been sinceyour father’s death?I was in Sweden a lot in thenew year. It is tough and isn’t afun thing to deal with but hehad a good life and lived to83. I miss the phone calls andgetting some good advice.
Have you had much chanceto sit down with some of theprospective team?At Hoylake we invited potentialplayers to a pavilion by the18th hole where the girls coulddrop in and say hi.
It was great for me as therewere quite a few who I hadnever met before like Carolta
Ciganda, Caroline Massonand Carly Booth.
I could ask them about theirgames and their schedules soit was a nice insight and veryrelaxed. A few will be at theKraft so there will hopefully betime to have a coffee and Ican answer any questions thatmight be on their mind.
I also spoke with AlisonNicholas – we sat down forquite some time and she gaveme some great things andwas very organised.
She said to call or email anytime which I will do and I willsee Helen Alfredsson at one ofthe Legends events so will pickher brain a bit as well.
On the course, did you learnmuch at Hoylake? Not really no, that was so hardfor the girls, the conditionswere brutal.
What about get-togethersahead of the match? We are trying to set up apractice session in the summerand find a date that everyonecan make in Colorado. It willhelp to get familiar with thecourse and the surroundingsso when we get around to theSolheim they know where thelocker room and driving rangeis and they are as comfortableas possible. We will invite quitea few players.
What is Colorado like?I like the course and think thegirls will really like it. have people out there tofollow every match and helpwith fruit and drinks or anyother requests. It is kind of afun course to play, with prettybig and undulating greenswhich will take a bit of gettingused to. A big thing is thealtitude as the ball will goclose to 10 per cent further. Itis also quite hilly.
It is a good matchplaycourse, the 16th has a big treein the middle and you can goeither side of it and make thehole quite a lot shorter if yougo down the tighter right side.
So there will be someinteresting strategy.
What happened whenSandra Gal and AnnaNordqvist took on AngelaStanford and Stacy Lewis? They played three holes andour girls won – which will givethem some confidence! Theyreally enjoyed the course andplayed some other holes andgot buggies to have a look atthe other holes.

What other aspects havegone into the planningbehind the scenes already? We are working on a playlist forthe bus ride which will be 25-30 minutes to get them readyfor the day and will do a mixof music for the team room.
We have also been lookingat the menus for the hotel andteam room and things likenutrition bars, decorations, andplayers and caddies’ gifts. We’lltry to get all that done asquickly as possible.
Everything takes longer thanyou think and I don’t want tobe thinking about these typeof things in the run up to thematches themselves.
So, then we can focus on thepicks and the pairings longwith my assistants Carin (Koch)and Annika (Sorenstam).
Was it an easy decision tohave Carin and Annika asyour vice-captains?Yes, I am pretty close with bothof them and have knownthem for such a long time.
Between us we have somegreat experience and thethree of us will talk a lot.
Annika will hopefully beable to come out to someevents, and lives in the States, while Carin still plays on the LET.
I will stick to two, I’m not sureyou can have more than two,but you can also pick helpersand have people out there tofollow every match and helpwith fruit and drinks or anyother requests.
What colours can we expectto see Europe in?We have picked all the outfitsthanks to Abacus, they’vedone it before and did a greatjob so they pretty much cameup with the outfits and knowwhat is fashionable. We knowpretty much know theAmericans will be in red, whiteand blue so we know what notto clash with!
How much thought have yougiven to the pairings? Because of the altitude it will
be tiring to walk 36 holes, mentally more than physically. The players are all in goodshape but it will be importantto keep people rested andhave some energy for thesingles and the 12 points thatare left to play for.
It is hard to think of anypairings now, so much is downto who makes the team, whois playing well and who wantsto play with who. I will askeveryone who they want toplay with, it is a long time tobe with someone and sostressful that you want to becomfortable with your partnerand enjoy each other’scompany and pump eachother up. Some of the girlsdon’t know some of theEuropeans quite as well buthopefully the get-together willhelp with that.
Have you spoken much withopposite number Meg?Meg is a good friend. Shecalled when my father passedbut we haven’t caught upsince the fall. No doubt we willcatch up at the Kraft.
Carlota Ciganda currentlyleads qualification, what doyou know of her?I saw her for just a couple ofholes at the British and she wasplaying with Carly Booth andLaura Davies which was fun.She is a super nice girl and wehad emailed a bit and I amlooking forward to watchingher at the Kraft.
She seems very down toearth and is very serious abouther game and very popular.
It was funny as a couple ofpeople told me I better pickher for the team but the wayshe is playing she might notneed my help.
You are now a year into yourcaptaincy, are you enjoyingthe role?I am enjoying it, I am reallylooking forward to getting outthere. So far it has been a lotof emails but this year the funreally starts.

SPANISH BACKBONEAs things stand we have threeSpanish girls in the team, twoof them rookies. Over the yearswe have relied on an Englishand Swedish backbone, thisyear Spain could be our mostfeatured country for the firsttime.
Carlota Ciganda was playingon the Access Tour in 2011,she then won the Order ofMerit (and Rookie of the Year)last year. She first came to ourattention when she beat AnnaNordqvist in the final of theBritish Amateur at Alwoodley in2007.
Beatriz Recari has now wontwice on the LPGA Tour havingcaptured the Kia Classic inMarch – in her first LET eventshe holed a 4-iron in the play-off in Finland to open heraccount.
Aza Munoz makes up the trioand her debut, and thatapproach to the 17th inIreland, demonstrated hugenerve and skill.
NO ‘LD’ FOR FIRST TIME?Laura Davies and SophieGustafson have an astonishing20 Solheim appearancesbetween them but there is areal possibility that neither willbe at Colorado GC.
Davies will turn 50 this yearand, on current form, it wouldtake some leap of faith to pickher as a wildcard. She enjoyedan incredible five wins in 2010but has since failed to addanother one.
Gustafson was the star of theKilleen Castle show with fourpoints from four outings, andproved lethal alongsideCaroline Hedwall, but hergame is a shadow of then.
Recently there has been aflurry of missed cuts and nottoo much cause for optimism.
The Swede made her debutin 1998 and has been anever-present since, Davies hasnever missed a match. All thatcould soon change though, you would imagine, notwithout a fight.
MATTHEW AND WHO ELSE?The British and Irish could wellbe limited come August. Asever Catriona Matthew lookslikely to net a place but thenthings begin to get a little bitsketchy.
Last time, Mel Reid toppedthe qualifying but she iscurrently down in 12th placewhile Scotland’s Carly Boothand the Johnsons, Flic andTrish, are above her in thestandings.
One outsider is Charley Hullwho has only just turnedprofessional but already has asecond place after a brilliantdebut in Morocco.
It seems that the English girlhas been around for years butis still only 17 and it would bean incredible story to go fromCurtis to Solheim Cup in justover a year.
The general feeling is that theLPGA players tend to get thenod for the wildcards whichwon’t add too much hope forfurther GB&I interest.
WHAT ABOUT AMERICA?The Americans have modifiedtheir qualifying system with twoplayers getting the 9th and10th positions from the worldrankings instead of the pointslist, to be complemented bytwo wildcards.
Currently there is a familiarlook to the leading qualifiersbut then we have the likes ofLexi Thompson and JessicaKorda in place to debut.
Three years ago the pair ledoff the American assault onGB&I in the 2010 Curtis Cup –at the end of the weekThompson would accumulate4½ points from five outings,Korda 3½. Together they wereunbeatable and it would befascinating to see whetherMeg Mallon would put themout as a pairing in the Solheim.
In Ireland the last threeplayers to make the side wereChristina Kim, Vicky Hurst andRyann O’Toole – all three arenowhere near to getting achance to get their revenge.

What was it like presentingSky Sports’ golf coverage?Presenting the golf on SkySports was fantastic. I love golfand I love talking about golf.At the end of 2011 I decidedto step away from work for ashort time to start a family. Ourlittle boy Maximilian JamesDougherty arrived in August2012. My time away frombroadcasting has made mevery hungry to return. I’m verymuch looking forward to 2013.
Can we expect to see youback on our screens soon?I have been doing some workon Sky News Sunrise as well asbranching out into other sports.I presented the World SeriesSquash Finals on Sky Sports inJanuary, which was incredible. The fitness of the professionalsis incredible and I am now akeen squash player! I am alsoreally excited to be working forthe Golf Channel at the end ofMay at Wentworth during thePGA Championship. I know alot of the guys over in theStates from various trips to theMajors and I can’t wait to workwith them. The programmes airin the States only but I will beblogging about my work andtweeting no doubt.
Who was your favourite Skypundit to work alongside?
They are all great in their ownway. Ewen Murray makes melaugh all the time! Wayne Rileyis full of energy and I loved ourad libs out on the course atvarious European Tour events. His energy is engaging.
I started at Sky as a runnerand would regularly makeRichard Boxall his breakfast!Richard has a very dry senseof humour, which I love. RobLee’s laugh is hilarious and Ialways get the giggles whenhe does. I still chat to themand enjoy their banter.
How nervous were you aheadof the Ryder Cup openingceremony in 2010 and is thatthe highlight of your careerso far?The Ryder Cup in 2010 wasbrilliant. I wasn’t actuallynervous during the OpeningCeremony. I was working witha fantastic team, great floormanager (Kate Strophair youknow who you are), JasonWessely producing and MikeAllen directing. I couldn’t gowrong. The chaps talking inyour ear are very importantand it’s so lovely to have calmcontrolled voices comingthrough to you. It makes ahuge difference and puts oneat ease. I had the easier job ofjust talking about the golf, theplayers had the tough job out
on the course! If you’d givenme a golf club on that 1st teethen I’d be nervous.
How is your golf at themoment, are you a memberof your club and what do youplay off?My golf is okay at the moment.I don’t want to say too muchmore as I’ll probably jinx mygame! Aren’t we all sosuperstitious! I play regularly atWentworth and have met agreat group of ladies there. Myhandicap is 11 at present. Mylowest was 6 when I was ateenager but due to work (yes– any old excuse) I have a fewmore shots now, which Icertainly enjoy.
I want to get back down tosingle figures by the end of theyear. Note to self: Mustpractise more
I am really looking forward tosome warmer weather thissummer though. Fingerscrossed.
How much help hashusband Nick been to yourgame?I play regularly and play alot of golf with my husband,Nick. I think I’m a prettygood student and listen tomost things he says! As awife though, I think it’s easyto have selective hearing!

He is very patient with me asI can lose my cool out on thecourse and not talk for a holeor two. That’s a normalrelationship on the golf coursethough isn’t it?!
I think it’s because I grew upin such a sports-madcompetitive environment.
How well do you think ladies’golf is covered by the media– whether in print or on TV?I think the ladies’ game isgoing from strength tostrength. There is so muchtalent on both sides of theAtlantic and in the Far Eastand the various Tours are finallygetting recognition. I had awonderful time at the SolheimCup in 2011 and got to knowthe girls well. They are hard-working, diligent professionalsand their games reflect that. Ilove reading golf magazineswith in-depth interviews aboutvarious players to get an‘inside the ropes’ feel abouttheir game and life.
Would you prefer to watchmen’s or ladies’ professionalgolf and why?I think the two games aredifferent and I appreciatethem both. I can obviouslyrelate to how the ladies playand can compare my
yardages and my own gameplan. The mens’ game isdifferent for me because Isimply can’t play that way interms of driving distance forinstance.
Both professional games areexciting and enthralling.
Are we doing enough toencourage girls to take upgolf and if not what needs tochange in your opinion?I think one huge influence is ifyour family play the game. Istarted because my mumwould take me to play mostweekends and she got meinvolved in junior coaching inour area. That led on tocoaching with Cheshire Girls’and membership of StockportGolf Club. That is not to sayone can’t become involved inthe game if it’s not a familysport. Driving ranges andmunicipal courses havecoaching courses for childrenat discount prices andequipment is available toborrow and use. If you look inyour particular area you arebound to find some coachingsessions and a par-3 course toplay to start with.
Role models like Melissa Reidand Paula Creamer certainlyhelp encourage girls in to thegame and their hard-working,
girl-power image is a verystrong message to young girls.I also believe the LadiesEuropean Tour and LPGA do agreat job at getting the wordout there. Let’s continue tosupport it.
Do you prefer inland orseaside golf and what’s yourfavourite course?Seaside courses. One of myfavourite places in the world isSt Andrews and the OldCourse. My brother went touniversity there so I rememberthe days when we would driveup from our home in the northwest. My mum and dad wouldtake us around the courses upthere and I love nothing betterthan playing a round of golfbreathing in the sea air.
Kingsbarns is also wonderful. Ihave had the privilege ofplaying in the Dunhill Links acouple of times and playing ina professional tournament atmy favourite location wasbrilliant. It was therefore a no-brainer when we werechoosing our wedding venue –Nick and I got married upthere in December 2011.
I hope one day I can partnerNick in the Dunhill Links. That willbe an interesting dynamic!
I promise, Nick, I will listen toyou...

BIOFLOW Sport BraceletI really like the look of this silicone wrist band. It comes indifferent sizes and is completely waterproof, so you don’thave to remove it for showering, swimming, etc.
Magnets have been clinically proved to improve bloodflow and encourage healing and pain relief. I gave it to mymother who was in pain and although it eased, I can’t saywhether it was due to the wrist band or the painkillers.

NIKE VR_S Covert DriverThis looks like it means business with its dramaticred colouring. The huge cavity back can only beseen from the sole, thus giving you a moreconventional view at address.
When I am sent adjustable drivers, I rarely botherto make any changes to them. Ladies’ lofts areinvariably too high, and the shafts are always tooflexible for me, so I tend to hit the ball high andleft. And this was no exception. However, this time Ihad the technology to change things.
It is simplicity itself to change the loft – anywherefrom 8.5 to 12.5° – and have the choice of threeface angles. Within seconds I had altered it to 9°with an open face angle to counteract the softershaft and instantly started ripping it down themiddle and with a much more penetrating flight.
When you can tweak this to suit your ownpreferences or conditions, it will suit everyone!SRP: £249
GALVIN GREEN Ella/Erin Compression Top & leggingsI do deprive myself of the ultimate benefits of skintightcompression technology, because, as I don’t enjoy feelingsqueezed, I always order a size larger! As a base layer, it feels great, and I really like the slight Vneck; many round necks feel tight round your throat. Greatmoisture wicking and freedom to move. SRP: £39 each

COBRA AMP Cell DriverWith strong, fast-swinging lady golfers in mind, Madeleinereviews clubs designed for men
If you find ladies’ clubs are too soft and flexible, but men’sare a bit too stiff, here is the perfect solution – this men’sdriver with a light shaft. It is more akin to the flex of a seniorshaft, and it’s absolutely marvellous!
The hexagon patterned grip is extremely good, and thehead comes in a range of colours – blue / silver / orange /red. The loft adjustment is simple – just a couple of twists withthe wrench. I started at 10.5°, and hit it very well, if a tadhigher than my normal flight, so I knocked it down to 9.5°and loved it even more.
It does feel incredibly light and absolutely effortless to use.Every shot just flew straight down the middle and at whatevertrajectory I wanted, thanks to the adjustment system.
If you are looking for a new driver, you definitely want to putthis on your list to try! SRP: £249

FOOTJOY WindshirtI know it comes in two colours, but I don’t think you canbeat the periwinkle! It’s a lovely shade of blue, andbeautifully offset with the white side vents and zip. TheFootJoy cuts are always very flattering with the contoured, tailored waist bands. The full zip is more convenient thanwindshirts you have to pull over your head, and the shortsleeves make it ideal for warmer days when the wind wouldotherwise cut through, necessitating a pullover. Not anymore with this high-performance windproof shell.SRP: £47
I took the Callaway X hot driver tothe range one eveningand tested itagainst my ownBig BerthaCallaway.X hot is muchlighter and isattractive – greyand pale pink witha patterned shaft. Ithas an adjustableface with threesettings – I started withstandard. The club is so much lighter I washitting most shots left so adjusted to open. This wasperfect, I didn’t hit one bad shot. It was very forgivingand the ball really did explode off the face. It felt soeasy! By the end of the bucket I reckon it was going20 yards further, so it is definitely hot!SRP: £249
PINNACLE Bling BallsI may have blinked when I saw the assortment of pink, yellow, violet and orange balls, but it actually didn’t feel atall strange playing with such vibrant colours. The advantageis obvious during frosty rounds, but the colours are highlyvisible in all conditions, which is a real bonus if you tend tolose the flight if white balls against the sky.
They are long – as you’d expect from Pinnacle – but theydon’t feel or sound hard, which is a real plus for control.SRP: £14 per dozen

TOUR TIPS: What you can learn from Azahara MunozThis excellent swing is veryrotational in the hips andshoulders through theball which is a real speedgenerator. Another powersource is created when shepushes her feet off theground through impact. This enables Azahara tocreate maximum speedin the clubhead for her sizeand strength. One interesting characteristic,
which is slightly unusual, is theright palm coming off the gripthrough the impact area. This can often happenwhen tremendous force iscreated on the downswingand the right arm and handrelease towards thetarget after impact rather thanexiting around the body. VijaySingh is a prime example ofthis in the men`s game.

Your flexiblefriend
If you’re not carrying at least one hybridthen you are really missing out
WE have all been facedwith a shot that requiresus to hit the ball a longdistance from a lie that is
not quite good enough to use a longiron. This shot in particular is mucheasier to hit using a hybrid. The way ahybrid is designed – with the centre ofgravity lower and deeper in thehead – helps us get as much mass aspossible under the ball, and get someelevation out of these tough lies.
Rachel Jennings is asecond yearprofessional on theLadies EuropeanTour. You can follow Rachelon Twitter @racheyjgolf
INSTRUCTION
LG pp 32-33 Jennings Instruction 19/04/2013 14:59 Page 32
www.ladygolferonline.co.uk Lady Golfer 33
The most important thingwhen playing this shot is theset-up, the ball must beforward in the stance with the
weight in a neutral position.Think of swinging the club asyou would do a mid-iron andnot your fairway wood.
We can see how muchbetter the hybrid is able toflatten the grass and getunder the ball. Long irons
tend to dig into the groundand the thinner profilecauses them to strugglegetting under the ball.
To avoid picking the club uptoo steeply, the hands arepushed slightly forward whenin the address position and
we try to drive the handsthrough the strike to keep theclub swinging through thegrass.
When playing this shot, it isimportant not to hit down toosteeply as a hybrid works bestwhen it is allowed to swing
through the grass and lift theball out. Trust the club to dothe work rather thanmanufacturing anything.

HAVE A DIVOT PARTYFairway woods shouldn’t be hit in the same way as your driver – they are more like an iron shot, says Julie Greciet
WHILE you must hit upthrough the ball with yourdriver, I like to take a veryshallow divot with my
fairway woods… which shows I haveproduced a descending blow into theback of the ball. It’s how Tiger andSergio hit their fairway woods... so it’sgood enough for me!
Set up with the ball an inch insideyour front foot from where you wouldhave it for you driver. This encouragesthe divot but keeps your body ‘behind’the ball so it is not too deep.
Your set-up means your hands will belevel with the ball, rather than aheadof it as it is with an iron shot... but youshould never try to scoop the ball.
This is the crucial error, and is thebenefit of creating a small divot – youcannot create a divot while scooping!

THE TRUTH ABOUTIMPROVINGYOUR CORE
Why sit-ups are NOT the secret to betterbalance. These quick exercises will help...
But you might also be underthe impression that the way toimprove your core is sit-ups.You’re wrong – they won’t.
Well, let’s qualify that; they willhelp, but they are not the bestway to improve this aspect ofyour fitness for golf.
Here, I’ll show you someexercises which will make youmuch fitter for golf, which willallow you to swing the club
more like the way your localPGA pro would like you to.
What’s more, you can makethese improvements in yourliving room while watching thegolf on a Sunday night!
Kati Crossfield is a personaltrainer based at David Lloydgym in Leeds. She can becontacted on 07786 557822 or by visiting davidlloyd.co.uk
You might have heard a ‘better core’ will improve your stabilityand balance, and therefore your swing. That is perfectly true.
FITNESS
THE START POSITIONGet on the floor and place your arms shoulderwidth apart, palms facing forwards. Have your
weight evenly distributed between your palms andyour toes. It’s a bit like a press-up position, and evenmerely getting into this position – which is only thestarting point – is already starting to fire your core.
FIRING UP THE ENGINENow we get really going – this exercise really fires
your core. Raise your right hand and left foot off theground... and hold for 20 seconds. If you can holdfor 30 seconds, do so. If you can’t make that your
target to reach at some point down the line.Repeat for the left side, and do three sets of these.

COOL BRITANN
Justine Board on how the Lady Golferteam put together our first ever fashionshoot
Don’t get me wrong, I like snow. Sometimes I loveit. I heart white Christmases, fresh powder on anAlpine ski slope, the satisfying underfoot creakwhen you tramp though the stuff. I just don’t like itwhen it is officially Spring and I am trying toorganise a Spring/Summer golf fashion shoot.Outside. AND IT IS SNOWING.
It’s not just the unhappy combination of thincotton singlet and biting wind – this is the UK, thathappens in August.
It is the huge, can’t-ignore-them, settling-on-your-eyelashes snowflakes, covering the greens, driftingin the air, photo-bombing our pictures andscuppering our best-laid plans.
I should explain. Here at Lady Golfer we decidedit was high time we showcased women’s golfwear in the environment it is designed for – out onthe course on actual Lady Golfers, so that you,the reader, can see how the clothes willrealistically look, move and perform.
We recruited the services of some magnificentYorkshire ladies, members at Rudding Park andRipon, and after being blighted by the white stuffat our original shoot location, Rudding Park, stillblanketed in snow and freezing temperatures fivedays after the initial snowfall, we re-directedmodels, photographer, hair and make-up,
clothes, props and equipment to the snow-freeAldwark Manor.
There is a patron saint of golf – St Andrewpredictably – but he must have been otherwiseengaged that morning because right on cue, themoment we had all assembled, the heavensopened and down it came like God’s dandruff.
And so here we are, our inauguralSpring/Summer fashion shoot. In the snow.
But then we started thinking... surely this is whatgolf is about? Taking on the elements, out in allweathers, battling both yourself and whatevernature can throw at you. Just look at Scott andCabrera duking it out at Augusta under heavyApril showers.
And with golf clubs struggling after a long, harshwinter, with spectator numbers dwindling atdomestic competitions to the extent that theEuropean Tour now includes events in Dubai, maybe we need a rallying cry to encourageeveryone to support British golf this summer, whether by playing at your local club or turningout at domestic events and cheering on ourplayers at all levels.
Maybe we need to follow the example of theYorkshire ladies in our shoot, and get out there andget stuck in, whatever the weather.
We hope you enjoy our first ever fashion feature, focusing this issue on the classic, super-smart (andpatriotic) colour combination of red, white andblue. Luckily including waterproofs.

And despite only opening a
couple of years ago, it isabout to get even better withLee Westwood putting hisstamp on the two courses. TheRyder Cup star has put hismark on the Lee WestwoodColt and the Lee WestwoodFilly courses, with workbeginning this summer torefresh them. It is another little
piece of history for CloseHouse, with its ancient Romanmonument that runs close toHadrian’s Wall and thebirthplace of GeorgeStephenson, the inventor ofsteam locomotion.
Located eight miles from thecentre of Newcastle and thesame distance from
Newcastle Airport, Close Houseis ideally situated in 400 acresof beautiful countryside.Resident teaching pro SallyHinton has a fine reputation forimproving the game’s of allstandards of golfer.

WELLBEING
One of the common misconceptionsabout going to a spa is that it is solelyabout indulgence, which of course, is theoverriding reason most of us go along. However, perhaps one of the best thingsabout them, particularly now that the termencompasses so many different facilities,is that they are an enjoyable gateway toaddressing all sorts of health concernsand learning new ways to tweak ourlifestyles to be happy and healthy in thelong term. So here is just a soupcon froma diverse range of complementarytherapies which can help with everythingfrom stress to coping with cancer.
THE MENOPAUSEFor some women it’s a life event that hasvery little impact, while for othersmenopause leaves an indelible and oftenintolerable mark on their day-to-day lives. However, while it often remains a
somewhat unspoken trauma, anincreasing number of experts are workingon holistic methods and lifestyle solutionswith long-term effects. At Grayshott HotelSpa, their team have extensive knowledgeabout nutrition for women and thesymptoms and holistic solutions forwomen both during and after they reachthe menopause, to make the transition asseamless as possible, or even to improveyour health afterwards.
ECZEMA AND PSORIASIS Anyone who has a skin condition, whetherit’s severe dry skill, eczema, or psoriasis, will know that treating them is an ongoingbattle. Often creams, lotions and potionsseem to initially treat the surface but don’thave a long-lasting effect either ondiscomfort or appearance. At DonningtonValley they offer an Aqua Sun MineralTreatment which sees you soak under a
UV canopy, in a bath containing 21minerals and organic plant extracts fromthe Dead Sea. As a source of Vitamin D, ithas a particularly positive effect onsoothing skin conditions, while alsocountering Seasonal Affected Disorder, acne, and aiding detox.
INSOMNIA Insomnia, and sleep problems can affectus at any age but particularly so when weare changing routines, perhaps as a resultof retirement or going through lifechanges such as menopause orbereavement. It is common practice tobelieve that most sleeping problems arethe result of an overactive mind, butaccording to sleep specialist, Tej Samani, there is a whole catalogue of reasons asto why people can struggle to sleep, many of them physical. Another specialistnow running his clinics through Grayshott

Hotel and Spa, Samani’s programmes areaccessible with the wider support of thevenue’s health and fitness facilities, adding a concentrated healingdimension and a kick start to change.
FATIGUEAs an offshoot of insomnia, stress, ordietary imbalances, chronic fatigue canreally have an impact on your quality oflife. Osteopathy, and in particular cranialosteopathy, can not only help to induce abetter night’s sleep, but also provide aprescriptive element, helping to identifyconcerns across the body that might becausing fatigue or contributing to itwithout you realising. Thanks to their recentintroduction of ESPA Life however,Gleneagles can help. The advantage ofthese treatments being delivered at a spais there are so many other surroundingtherapies available in the same place to
add support; here, the on-site naturopath, who oversees ESPA Life, offers lifestyle andnutritional advice to help ensure that theeffects of the treatment are ongoing.
OSTEOARTHRITISWhile acupuncture is often associatedwith pain control, it has much broaderapplications. The World HealthOrganization recognises the use ofacupuncture in treating a wide range ofmedical problems from digestivedisorders to respiratory disorders, skindisorders to neurological and musculardisorders, including osteoarthritis, which isa particular issue when we get a bit older. As a specialised treatment it isn’t availableat all spas, but combining acupuncturewith a luxury holiday, The BodyHoliday in StLucia, includes acupuncture among itscollection of holistic treatments, deliveredby Taoist practitioner, Toby Maguire.
BACK ACHEIn its 21st-century guise, Shiatsu canincorporate a number of variantpractices, but at its core it is therapeuticbody work that can include osteopathy, acupressure points, stretches, and jointmobilisation. The effects vary as it is verymuch a practice that is tailored to theindividual, but it is often used to help easeback problems, particularly if it is followedup with regular yoga and otherrecommendations that therapists mayadvise. It has also been used to helpreduce tension, and many therapists use itas a way of helping to relieve thepsychological stress of illnesses includingParkinson’s Disease and cancer. PenhaLonga Hotel and Golf Resort is amongstthe many venues that offer Shiatsu, in theglorious surroundings of their Six SensesSpa … and yes, they do offer yoga by thepool as well.

Claire KaneMen are from Mars... vive la difference!
OVER the years I’veplayed golf I havenoticed men andwomen approach
the game differently. Now I appreciate this may
be a controversial subject, andmy observations won’t apply toeveryone, but I’m sure I’m notthe only one to notice adifferent slant between thesexes.
For a start, men love a wageron the course. They adore theirskins and bits where birdies, barkies (hitting a tree) andsandies are just a few of thenumerous accumulators andside bets.
Wads of cash are often all onthe last putt (no wonder somepoor souls develop the yips)and the unwritten etiquette isapparently always making sureyou have enough money tocover your worst round ever!
In contrast, women tend justto play and score!
When it comes to organisinggames, women consult theirdiaries and negotiate dateswith friends and fellow playersand book games weeksahead whereas men areknown to simply walk off the18th tee and shout out ‘seeyou the same time next week’.
Women think nothing of multi-tasking on the course, swinginga club and discussing many aproblem during a game.
Issues about the kids(especially the grown-upvariety), the economy andpolitics as well as respectivecareers are covered.
Plus, rounds have beenknown to include the odd bitof gossip too.
The men’s game is frequentlyfull of banter, taking themickey at every opportunity, interspersed with snippets of
sport and the odd mention ofwork thrown in.
Men’s competitive naturescan make it hard for them toresist impulse buying newtechnology on sale in the proshop – anything to give thema temporary edge.
Women are certainly notbackwards when it comes toknowing what’s new on themarket but, for many, value is
the name of the game andthey might want to try beforethey buy.
Females can be savvyshoppers and far more likely to‘pick and mix’ their golfingwardrobe withinterchangeable clothes fromthe high street or bargainsbagged from the web.
They’ll buy the club coloursbut you can bet if M&S areselling the same shade then afew shrewd individuals will bespotted wearing it.
On the other hand, there aremany men who have a ‘yearly,one-shop’ policy where they’llbuy the same jumper in threecolours and repeat for the nextdecade.
The golf bag of the averagefemale is stuffed with items tocover every eventuality.
We’re talking clothing for anyclimate change, a first aid kit aparamedic would be proud ofand enough food to sustain a
well-built fourball for a week ormore.
The average man bagcontains golf clubs, half adozen balls and, in the depthsof winter, maybe some wet-weather gear!
Finally, when it comes tofood, Desperate Dan-sizedbacon butties, doorstoptoasties and robust curries areoffered in the clubhouse toappeal to the healthy, masculine appetite.
In contrast it’s pots of tea orcoffee, toasted teacakes or alight meal for the ladies.
The one thing the sexesappear to have in common isa glass of something from thebar and perhaps alongside afew cheesy chips!
