www.stedwards.church Ladies Group Tuesday this week (13th September) sees the start of the autumn and winter programme for the Eggbuckland Ladies Group. Members meet in the church hall on the second Tuesday of each month at 7.30pm. On Tuesday the guest speaker is Pat Steed who will be giving a presentation on the Origins of Cheddar Cheese ’. Anyone interested in coming along just for the one evening or to join the Group need only turn up at the door to be warmly welcomed. Education Sunday Now that the new academic year has begun for all educational establishments, it seems appropriate that today is Education Sunday, a national day of prayer and celebration for everyone in the world of education. It is not just a day for teachers and students but for everyone who works, volunteers and prays for education in all its forms – Sunday school leaders, administrators in educational settings, school leaders, university lecturers, those involved in adult education, school governors – the list goes on. Education Sunday is a day to celebrate and affirm that service and bless those who work hard to bless others. Parish Magazine Deadline How quickly time passes. Surely it cannot be deadline day today for the October Parish Magazine? A check of the calendar reveals that indeed it is, so copy please as quickly as possible to Pat Whatty. There is always something that needs doing This past week there has been plenty of activity over and above the norm in the hall and around the church. The hall boiler has been repaired and further electrical work remains outstanding. Across the road, Tony Hines has been busy clearing the church gutters, gulleys and drains. Our church officers have been inspecting the exterior of the tower to try and determine just how much re- pointing work may be necessary to prevent water penetration. Inside the tower there are dampness problems and re- decorating of the west wall of the church on more than one occasion has not proved successful so some remedial external work is necessary. The maintenance budget will be hard put to cope! Midweek Communion & Community Lunch There will be an 11.30am Communion Service in St Edward s this coming Wednesday, 14th September. This is followed by the Monthly Community Lunch for which diners can turn up from 12 noon in the church hall. Bookings in advance can be made through Rev Chris.

Only Joking (with acknowledgements to our link parish of Sidmouth’s magazine)

A small boy asked his mother for a cucumber to take to Junior Church. A slightly puzzled mother complied. Later she asked what it had been used for. “Sorry, Mum,” he confessed. “I got it wrong. We were

supposed to bring a newcomer.” On a bus, a man gave his seat to a woman. She fainted. On recovering, she thanked him. Then he fainted. In a church notice sheet: A sudden gust of wind took all who were at the ceremony by surprise. Hats were blown off and copies of the vicar’s speech and other rubbish were scattered over the site.
