1 INTRODUCTION AND WELCOME Dear Student It is my pleasure to welcome you as a student to the module Didactics: Learning Area Didactics Economics and Management Sciences at the University of South Africa. You will receive a number of tutorial letters during the year. A tutorial letter is our way of communicating with you about teaching, learning and assessment. This tutorial letter contains important information about the scheme of work, resources and assignments for this module. You are urged to read it carefully and to keep it at hand when working through the study material, preparing the assignments and preparing for the examination. In this tutorial letter (101), you will find the assignments and assessment criteria as well as instructions on the preparation and submission of the assignments. It also provides all the information you need with regard to the prescribed study material and other resources, and how to obtain them. 2 PURPOSE AND OUTCOMES FOR THE MODULE 2.1 The aim The aim of this module is to enable students to become competent teachers, well grounded in the knowledge, skills, values, principles, methods and procedures relevant to Learning Area Didactics: Economics and Management Sciences, in primary and secondary schools (SP & FET). 2.2 The outcomes The outcomes of this module are twofold. First, students are equipped to develop the knowledge, skills, values, principles, methods and procedures to understand and explain orally and in writing the relevant theory of teaching in a problem-based education environment. The Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) are used to teach students to become competent accounting teachers for Grades 10 to 12. Secondly, students are guided through practical examples to enable you to demonstrate your knowledge, skills and values by applying the theory in the teaching situation in the classroom. Foundational competence is of relative importance in teacher education in South Africa. Professional teachers cannot perform their roles effectively and efficiently without the necessary specialist (subject or content) knowledge. However, it is dangerous to assume that subject or content knowledge alone can assure the teacher in the classroom of competent practical performance (Fraser 2005:235). Practical competence can be observed directly when teachers are performing their jobs – actions that stem from real teaching situations in the classroom and by considering possibilities, making decisions and carrying out the chosen action (Fraser 2005:235). Some of you are experienced teachers and can use this experience in accounting classes. Reflexive competence in teacher education aims to develop teachers who have the skills to continually inquire into their own teaching practice and to learn from their experience. With your prior experience as teachers, you can show evidence of growth in reflexive competence. Through reflection, you can become aware of shortfalls in, for instance, your foundational and/or practical competence and develop an ability to adapt to changes and to explain the reasons behind the changes (Fraser et al 2005:234). This module follows an approach that requires you as a teacher to provide evidence of the integration of competences in meaningful ways, using the seven educator roles.

6 MODULE-SPECIFIC STUDY PLAN 6.1 The study guide You will receive a study guide that will be sent to you after registration. The study guide covers a wide field in order to provide you with the necessary background knowledge. If you work systematically through the study guide and other tutorial matter according to a set timetable, you should have no difficulty mastering the subject matter. 6.2 The assignments After you have received your study package, immediately start with Assignment 01 (admission to the examination) and submit it. Then do Assignment 02 (a 20% year mark will be calculated on the basis of achievement in both Assignments 01 and 02). 6.3 Practical teaching For you to be able to do the lesson plans in the practical teaching workbook, you first have to do an in-depth study of the CAPS Economics and Management Sciences Section 3 (pages 10 to 18) and study learning units 1, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8 in your study guide. For this you need a study plan. I refer you to the brochure Study @ Unisa for general time management and planning skills.

7 MODULE PRACTICAL WORK AND WORK-INTEGRATED LEARNING Teaching practice (Module PTEAC1X) Learning Area Didactics: Economics and Management Sciences students will be required to PREPARE and PRESENT at least five lessons in the presence of a subject or senior teacher at a school. Teaching Practice is a compulsory requirement for the PGCE and BEd (Senior Phase and FET) course.

8 ASSESSMENT 8.1 Assessment plan: assignments 8.1.1 Assignments and learning Assignments are seen as part of the learning material for this module. As you do the assignments, study the reading texts, consult other resources, discuss the work with fellow students or tutors or do research, you are actively engaged in learning. Looking at the assessment criteria given for each assignment will help you to understand what is required of you more clearly. 8.1.2 General remarks You might also find information on myUnisa. To go to the myUnisa website, start at the main Unisa website, www.unisa.ac.za, and then click on the Login to myUnisa link underneath the myUnisa heading on the screen. Follow the instructions on the screen. 8.1.3 Feedback on assignments You will receive the correct answers for written assignment questions. For written assignments, markers will comment constructively on your work. However, feedback on the compulsory and optional assignments will be sent to all students registered for this module in follow-up tutorial letters. The tutorial letter numbers will be 201 and 202.

As soon as you have received the feedback, please check your answers. The assignments and the feedback on these assignments constitute an important part of your learning and should help you to be better prepared for the next assignment and the examination.

8.2 General: assignments You will be expected to do TWO compulsory assignments. 8.2.1 Unique assignment numbers Both Assignments 01 and 02 contain a variety of questions and will give you admission to the examination. These questions should be answered in the writing material you received after registration (included in the package that you received). Study the brochure Study @ Unisa for guidelines on how to complete your assignments.

For examination purposes, a 20% year mark will be calculated on the basis of achievement in both Assignments 01 and 02. It is very important that you do all the sections in writing so that you can prepare yourself to write the examination. The assignments are designed to guide you progressively through the study package. After the closing dates you will receive solutions to Assignments 01 and 02, which you should compare with your written answers. 8.2.2 Criteria applied in the marking of the assignments I am enclosing the following information in order to familiarise you with one of the ways in which assignments will be assessed. When writing an assignment of this nature you should read extensively and thoroughly study the sources we have provided. For your assignments please attend to the following:

• Draw up a scheme of headings and sub-headings according to which you would like to discuss the specific topic. This scheme need not be static. As you proceed with your exposition you may find it necessary to alter certain sub-sections or items. The final scheme must be included as part of the assignment’s table of contents.

9 EXAMINATIONS 9.1 Admission to the examination Admission to the examination will be handled automatically by the computer. A student will only be admitted to the examination if he/she has completed and submitted the compulsory Assignment 01 in time. 9.2 The examination paper The duration of the examination paper is two hours for 100 marks. There will be four questions of which you will have to answer three. One question will be compulsory. The questions may be divided into subsections. The following learning content should be prepared for the examination (October/November 2018 and January 2019): ♦ All the assignments (as they are very important) ♦ Study guide for LADEMSJ ♦ The questions following each unit in the study guide 9.3 Examination period This module is a year module in 2018. This means that you will write the examination in October/November 2018. The examination section will provide supplementary examination dates. During the year, the Examination Section will provide you with information regarding the examination in general, examination venues, examination dates and examination times. GENERAL 1. The duration of the examination paper is two hours. 2. You will be required to answer three questions as follows: a) Question 1 is COMPULSORY (short and paragraph-type questions). Briefly summarise the factors of motivation that Economic and Management Science teachers should consciously consider and use to design learning situations that will motivate learners to learn, as explained in the study guide. 10. Identify the skills that Economic and Management Sciences teachers should consciously develop to become competent teachers in the learning area/subject, as explained in the study guide.
