Description Cotterman® Dual Trak® 7400 series Ladder Systems are intended for use by one person to access light duty storage shelving for manual retrieval of merchandise, parts or other articles that can be safely carried in one hand. Variants are available suitable for aisles ranging in width from 35 inches to 48 inches and from over 48 inches to 61 inches, with upright intervals no greater than 4 ft.-6 in.

Dual Trak® Ladder Systems are approved only for installation on Lozier S Series or Merchandise Equipment Group Shelf Space Light Duty Storage Shelving. Consult a structural engineer and Cotterman Company ([email protected]) before installing on any other shelving, rack or structural support system.

The system consists of a 300 lb. capacity rolling ladder, a wheeled trolley and a track system used to support the trolley and ladder from the shelving uprights. Longitudinal ladder movement up and down the aisle is provided by the wheeled trolley rolling on the track system.

A combination of a spring-loaded caster system and a patented trolley brake restrict movement of the ladder while in use. A cable operated, gas spring powered hinge system allows users to park the ladder in an open position when not in use, allowing free passage through the aisle for personnel and handling equipment.

For aisles over 48 inches wide, a patented lateral motion mechanism permits users to position the ladder within easy reach of the shelving, on either side of the aisle. A patented lateral motion brake holds the ladder securely when in position for use.

The track system consists of brackets and track which the purchaser, or their selected qualified installation professionals, must install on the shelving using the provided brackets. After the track is installed, the trolley is installed on the track system and then the ladder is assembled and installed on the trolley. After the purchaser’s satisfactory inspection and approval of the completed installation, the system is ready to use.

installing, assembling or using these ladders. 2. Assembly and installation of these types of ladders can be

inherently dangerous. Take all precautions necessary during assembly and installation.

3. Always use a separate ladder or scaffold to finish assembly or installation in high places.

4. Never climb a ladder that is not completely assembled or fully installed.

5. Do not assemble, install or use a ladder with missing or damaged parts.

6. Use proper lifting mechanics when assembling or installing a ladder.

7. Watch for and avoid overhead electrical hazards and obstructions.

Unpacking 1. Carefully unload the delivery vehicle

to avoid damage to any item.

2. Inspect all items carefully for freight damage and note any damage on the carrier delivery receipt. If you do not note damage on the Delivery Receipt, you may be held responsible for the damage.

3. On the Delivery Receipt, note the number of handling units received.

4. Do not remove shipping tags and identification labels from any items until installed.

5. Do not remove the Safety Instruction tag affixed to the ladder.

6. Be sure to retrieve and retain the packing list.

7. After unloading, carefully compare items and quantities received to the packing list. Note any deficiencies immediately and report to your Grainger branch or Account Manager.

8. Retain a copy of the packing list for reference during installation

Site Survey:

1. Identify aisles for installation. Check for field conditions affecting installation.

Do not install ladders in aisle in which permanent obstacles impede ladder or trolley motion or in which applicable ordinances prohibit aisle obstruction.

2. Dual Trak® Ladder Systems are approved only for installation on Lozier S Series or Merchandise Equipment Group Shelf Space Light Duty Storage Shelving. Consult a structural engineer and Cotterman Company ([email protected]) before installing on any other shelving, rack or structural support system.

Installing the ladder system on an unapproved shelving, rack or structural support system may result in collapse of the system and serious injury or death.

3. Ensure that shelving uprights or other track mounting surfaces are adequately anchored to the floor and capable of supporting track, trolley, ladder and the maximum rated load of the ladder.

Installing the ladder system on damaged uprights or on any structurally insufficient member may result in collapse of the system and serious injury or death.

4. Ensure that the intended track installation height in each aisle is within the specified range for the ladder intended for installation (see Specifications and Selection Guide, above).

Failure to install track at proper height may prevent proper function of the ladder and trolley systems: Ladder movement may be impeded and proper location of the ladder difficult or impossible.

Steps and platform may not rest in a level position, causing an unsafe condition.

5. Ensure that there is a shelf at the intended track installation height between every pair of uprights.

6. Ladders and Trolleys are available in Standard and Brake models (see Specifications and Selection Guide, above). Ensure that you have the correct type of ladder for each aisle width. • For 35 to 48 inch wide aisles

use Standard Ladders and Trolleys.

NOTE: Use of Brake Ladders and Trolleys in 35 to 48 inch wide aisles may impede movement of ladder.

• For aisles over 48 inches wide and up to 61 inches wide, use Brake Ladders and Trolleys.

Use of Standard Ladders and Trolleys in aisles over 48 inches wide may result in trolley failure and ladder collapse, resulting in serious injury or death.

7. Count number of 3-foot and 4-foot shelving upright intervals and compare to available track: • For 3-foot intervals, use GT1003

Track • For 4-foot intervals, use GT1004

Track • For greater intervals, use

GT1005 Track

Bracket interval can not exceed 4-1/2 feet. Use of track longer than this may result in track, trolley and ladder collapse, resulting in serous injury or death.

8. Check type of shelving and compare to available brackets: • For installation on shelving

uprights and for wall mounting track. use L15 series brackets.

• To terminate track on a wall perpendicular to aisle, use LWEBG bracket.

Use of incorrect brackets or failure to properly fasten brackets to uprights or other mounting surfaces may result in track, trolley and ladder collapse, resulting in serious injury or death.

9. Check for overhead or aisle obstructions or electrical hazards that may prevent operation or movement of ladder, or cause injury to users.

Remove such hazards before installing ladders. Installation of ladders in aisles with these hazards may result in serious injury or death.

10. Correct discrepancies in material requirements and correct any site conditions before beginning installation.

NOTE: Failure to identify and correct material shortages or discrepancies prior to starting installation may result in delays or excess costs.

Track Installation: Working up aisles from dead end (Fig. 2, opposite page): 1. Measure and mark track height on

each upright. Ensure that the track height is within the range for the ladder you are installing. It is best if the track is mounted such that the top of the track is just below top of shelf level.

Failure to install track at correct height may prevent proper function of the ladder and trolley systems: Ladder movement may be impeded and proper location of the ladder difficult or impossible. Steps and platform may not rest in a level position, causing an unsafe condition.

2. Install brackets and track (Fig. 2). Select proper brackets and method for application. See Specifications and Selection Guide and Site Survey, Step 6, above. See Fig. 2 for installation of L15U Brackets and LWEBG Bracket. Use provided bolts, spacers, washers and nuts to attach brackets to uprights.

a. For uprights without wood infill panels, use a 17/64 in. drill for mounting holes.

b. Use 7/16 in. combination or socket wrench to tighten provided bracket bolts.

Using screws to attach brackets to uprights that do not have wood infill panels may result in bracket separation from upright and track, trolley and ladder collapse, resulting in serious injury or death.

c. For uprights with wood infill panels, drill a 9/64 in. pilot hole through the metal upright applicable and into the wood. Then use only the provided screws to attach the bracket.

d. Use 3/8 in. combination or socket wrench to tighten provided screws.

Drilling the pilot hole over-size in wall mount applications or for L15 brackets on uprights with wood infill panels or for mounting LWEBG to a wood plate, may result in bracket separation from mounting surface and track, trolley and ladder collapse, resulting in serious injury or death.

3. Wall mount application (Fig. 5), when aisle is bounded by a wall on one side.

a. Mount 2 x 4 plate to wall using fastening methods sufficient to support the weight of the track, trolley, ladder and rated load of the ladder plus a safety factor. Consult an architect or structural engineer before installing.

b. Drill a 9/64 in. pilot hole into the wood plate. Then mount the LWEBG bracket using only the provided screws.

c. Use 3/8 in. combination or socket wrench to tighten provided screws.

Installation of incorrect system components or installation in prohibited aisles may result in serious injury or death.

4. Track Selection: • GT1003: For 3 foot upright

intervals. • GT1004: For 4 foot upright

intervals. • GT1005 Track may be cut to

length to accommodate bracket intervals between 4 ft. and 4-1/2 ft. Ensure that end play between brackets is no more than ½” (Fig. 6).

Trolley Installation

1. Ensure that the proper trolley is selected for the aisle width. (See Specifications and Selection Guide, above)each aisle

Use of Standard Trolleys in aisles over 48 inches wide may result in trolley failure and ladder collapse, resulting in serious injury or death.

2. Install trolley. See Fig. 2 and Fig. 7. NOTE: “This Side Up” label indicates proper vertical orientation. NOTE: Install trolley with cross bar with horizontal stop as illustrated.

3. Install final end brackets See Fig. 2.

4. Be sure that the trolley path is unobstructed. Install A-301-9147, Track Stop – 2 Piece Clamp Assy as required to prevent trolley or ladder collision with any obstacles which can not be removed, or to provide uniform stop when end brackets are staggered. See Fig. 8.

Ladder Installation

1. Place ladder in aisle resting on handrails as shown (Fig 2.).

2. Set Pivot Arm to the correct position for installed track height using Table 1.

a. Measure track height from floor to top of track.

b. Ensure that track height is within range for the ladder being installed.

c. Using Table 1, above, determine the correct location number for the measured track height and note.

d. Unbolt the Pivot Arm from the ladder using 9/16 in. wrenches.

e. Bolt the Pivot Arm to the ladder such that the top bolt hole is aligned with the correct hole location (See 2(c), above). Insert the bolt into the hole from below, ensuring that the nut is located as illustrated (Fig. 9).

3. Set cables to correct position using a 7/16 inch wrench (Fig. 10).

a. Pivot Arm Cable: Attach cable anchor at hole location on anchor strip corresponding to pivot arm location number noted above (See 2(c), above).

b. Lateral Brake Cable: If equipped, attach cable anchor to hole location on anchor strip corresponding to pivot arm location number noted above ((See 2(c), above).

4. Remove bumpers (Standard Ladders -(Fig. 11) or lower wheels (Brake Ladders - Fig. 12) from ladder using a 9/16 in. combination or socket wrench. Attach Ladder to Trolley.

5. Using proper lifting methods elevate

ladder and hook on trolley, ensuring correct lateral position.

a. For Standard Ladders: Ladder should be located, with the hook inside the stop (not between the stop and the adjacent shelf face), as close to the horizontal stop (Fig. 13) as possible, while still maintaining a distance of less than 16 inches from the vertical face of the shelving on the other side of the ladder (Fig. 14).

Ensure that bushing in bumper remains in place. Installation without bushing may result in disengagement of ladder from trolley, resulting in serious injury or death.

b. For Brake Ladders: Ladder should be located, as shown (Fig. 12 & Fig. 13), with wheels inside the stop, and located as close to the horizontal stop as possible.

Use proper lifting mechanics when assembling a ladder. Improper lateral position of ladder may result in serious injury or death.

Always use a separate ladder or scaffold to finish assembly.

6. Using a scaffold or another ladder as an elevated standing surface, re-attach bumpers or wheels (Fig. 2 & Fig. 10 or Fig. 11), using a 9/16 in. combination or socket wrench.

Ensure that bushing in bumper remains in place. Installation without bushing may result in disengagement of ladder from trolley, resulting in serious injury or death.

7. Check proper function of ladder. Note that the ladder has two positions: the use (or climbing) position and the open (or parked) position.

a. Use position: Ensure that the ladder latch engages the trolley when the ladder is in the use position (Fig. 15) and that the trolley longitudinal motion brake

engages when the ladder is climbed (Fig. 16).

b. Open position: Ensure that the latch release cable operates correctly and that the ladder opens when the cable is pulled, swinging open to the right side of the aisle, against the shelving.

c. Lateral Movement: For Brake Ladders (equipped with the lateral movement mechanism), ensure that the brake release cable functions correctly, releasing the lateral motion brake and allowing movement when pulled and engaging the brake when the cable is released (Fig. 17).

Post-Installation Review by Purchaser and Installation Professional Overall

Read and understand this Installation and Operating Instructions and Parts Manual for correct installation and operation.

Ensure that ladder system is installed only on approved shelving systems (see Site Survey). Check for proper combination of aisle width, ladder model and trolley model. Check for proper combination of ladder height, pivot arm height and track height Check that installation complies with this Installation and Operating Instructions and Parts Manual

All Track Ensure that track height and pivot arm location are correct (Ladder Installation, Table1). Check for complete use of proper brackets and proper bracket fastening methods Check that track is intact and continuous. Individual track pieces must be straight. Check maximum span between brackets

Roll ladder full length of aisle – verify that ladder and trolley are unimpeded and trolley wheels fully engaged on track.

Ensure that A-301-9147, Track Stops prevent trolley or ladder contact with obstructions. Move ladder laterally – be sure lateral motion is unimpeded and the lateral brake functions. Check opening operation Ensure ladder engages trolley latch when in the use position. Ensure that ladder is installed in proper lateral position – no more than 16 inches reach to face of shelving

when in use. Climb Ladder – check brake operation. Ladder must not move while in use.

Check labeling, safety tag and caution tape (Fig. 18 & Fig. 19).

Report any conditions immediately.

Do not use any ladder that is damaged or otherwise not installed according to the Operating Instructions and Parts Manual. Ensure that ladders are within specification and operating correctly before each use. Use proper lifting mechanics when assembling a ladder.

Operating Instructions

Do not use any ladder that is damaged or otherwise not installed according to the Installation and Operating Instructions and Parts Manual. Ensure that ladders are within specification and operating correctly before each use.

MOVING LADDER: 1. Stand in front of the ladder facing the climbing steps. 2. Position the ladder by walking it down the aisle to

the desired location. 3. The ladder carriage MUST remain completely on

both tracks at ALL times. 4. If there are obstructions in the aisle that the ladder

cannot roll around, the bottom of the ladder may be lifted over it.

5. If the obstruction is too large to move past, then have the obstruction moved to another location.

INSPECTION: 1. Inspect upon receipt and before each use. Never

climb a damaged, bent or broken ladder. All parts MUST be in good, secure working order. Do not climb ladder if track brackets are not bolted to each rack upright. Immediately report any condition to supervisor.

2. Make sure all nuts and bolts are tightly fastened. Also, all steps and wheels MUST be secure. Immediately report any condition to supervisor.

3. NEVER make temporary repairs for a damaged or missing part.

4. Check operation of brake mechanism. When ladder is occupied and mechanism is engaged, ladder MUST set firmly on floor.

5. Immediately report any condition to supervisor PROPER CLIMBING AND USE: 1. DO NOT use ladder if you tire easily, are subject to

fainting spells, are using medication or alcohol, or are physically handicapped.

2. Ensure that the ladder is latched to trolley before climbing. If the ladder is equipped with a lateral motion mechanism, ensure that ladder is positioned as close as possible to the shelving being accessed. NOTE: Some ladder systems may have a physical stop that prevents the ladder from moving from side to side.

3. ALWAYS face the ladder when climbing up or down,

keeping your body centered on the steps/treads. 4. ALWAYS climb to the height necessary to reach the

stock 5. Maintain a firm grip at all times. Use both hands, when

possible, climbing up or down the ladder. 6. Never climb or descend a ladder from the side. 7. If stock is being brought up or taken down the ladder,

always move slowly and carefully. 8. DO NOT skip steps. 9. DO NOT reach across the aisle or lean toward the

side. 10. DO NOT over reach. If stock items CAN NOT be

reached SAFELY, step down from the ladder and reposition the ladder.

11. DO NOT climb or use the ladder if occupied by another person. This ladder is intended for use by one person at a time.

12. DO NOT move the ladder if another person occupies it.

13. DO NOT “walk “, “jog” or “roll” the ladder when standing on it.

14. DO NOT use any other items such as stools, other ladders, chairs, etc. on this ladder for extending reach.

15. DO NOT stand, climb, or sit on ladder top cap or track. PROPER CARE AND STORAGE: 1. Replace all worn rubber feet, wheels and casters. 2. When the ladder is NOT in use, move the ladder as far

as possible to one side and pivot the ladder to clear the isle.

3. Position the ladder so it DOES NOT extend out past the end of the track into an aisle.

4. DO NOT leave the ladder unattended in the middle of a heavily used aisle or crossing.

5. Destroy ladders that are broken, worn or if exposed to fire or chemical corrosion.

Ensure that ladder is latched to trolley before climbing. If the ladder is equipped with a lateral motion mechanism, ensure that ladder is positioned as close as possible to the shelving being accessed.

Warranty All Cotterman® products are guaranteed against defects in workmanship and materials for a period of one (1) year after shipment.

At our discretion, Cotterman Company will repair or replace the product in question at no charge – subject to inspection.

Freight damage, misapplication, misuse and improper installation (including the consequences of improper installation) of the product are not covered by this warranty.
