Materials & Project Notes

Who says you can't look pretty while you sleep? This lacy heart-shaped sleep mask is full of girly frills, but its triple layers keep light out so you can get your beauty rest any time of the night or day. Use bright pink yarn if you're making this for the little lady in your life. What a great favor for a teenage girl's sleepover. If you use a sparkly scarlet yarn, this design instantly goes from nice to naughty. Or you can opt to make it in a soothing white or cream — perfect for a bride who needs shut-eye before the big day. Whatever you decide, this sweet little sleep mask is quick and easy to make, a great option for a last-minute gift. "I love sleep. My life has a tendency to fall apart when I'm awake, you know?" – Ernest Hemmingway

Rnd 4: Make 4 sc in ch-4 sp, (P-dc in next dc, ch 1) Repeat 4 times, and make one P-dc in 5th dc of Rnd 3. Sc in nxt 2 V-sts (skipping the chs), and make 3 sc in bottom ch-3 sp. Sc in nxt 2 V-sts (skipping the chs), and (P-dc in nxt dc, ch 1) 4 times, and make 1 P-dc in 5th dc of Rnd 3. 4 sc in ch-4 sp. Sl st in original Rnd 1 ch to join. FO

Straps (make 2) Ch 20 Row 1: Hdc in BLO of 3rd ch from hook. Hdc in BLO of each ch across (18 hdc). FO, leaving a 6-inch tail for sewing.

Instructions for Mask Liner 1. Place each heart side by side on a

piece of paper, overlapping slightly. 2. Trace around both hearts with a

pencil. (I've provided you with the template I used (see page 10), but your hearts may be a different size depending on yarn, hook size, and tension, so it's a good idea to know how to make your own, just in case.)

3. Cut out the shape you traced. It's your template.

4. Place the paper template FACE DOWN on the felt, and trace around it.

5. Then, cut the felt along the line you traced. I put the abbreviation "WS" on the wrong side of my felt (on the side where my pen marks appear).

6. With the RS facing you, lay the lacy hearts on top of the felt shape and trim any areas that stick out beyond the hearts.

7. You're now going to use the felt shape as a new "template" for cutting the flannel. Lay the flannel on a flat surface with WS facing you. Place the felt shape WS DOWN on the flannel, and trace a line on the flannel about 1/2 inch from the actual felt shape. (This is the seam allowance, which you'll fold under later.)

Next, trace directly around the felt shape. This is the actual seam line where you will fold the flannel. 8. Cut the flannel along the OUTER line

(seam allowance line).

9. Snip little slits along the seam allowance to make folding easier.

10. Fold the flannel along the inside (seam) line. Carefully iron along the fold, creating a nice crease.

Assembly 1. Sew one strap to the outside edge of

each heart. Make sure your heart is facing RS up.

(Here is what the WS looks like, just so you know.)

2. Pin the WS of the flannel to the WS of the felt, and then pin the two hearts to the felt.

3. Cut a long length of embroidery floss (I used 40 inches — yipe!), and make a running stitch about 1/8 inch in from the seam, sewing through all three layers.

4. Cut a 1.5-inch piece of elastic, and sew the ends to the ends of the straps. This stretchy detail allows for heads of different sizes. !

Pin the hearts to the

liner. My pins are

REALLY hard to see!

Here's a stitch chart that I scribbled for you in case you're having trouble crocheting the lacy heart. I drew each round in alternating colors.
