Laboratory of Construction Materials 1918-2018

1918 Founding of the Laboratory for Testing of Materials. The laboratory is one of the oldest labs at EPFL and was created by Henri Demierre and professor Marius Lacombe, respectively secretary and director of the “Ecole d’ingénieurs” in Lausanne.

1927-1949 Professor Jean BolomeyThe laboratory for testing of materials is split into two divisions:

the division «metallurgy» and the division «stone materials» which will be directed by Prof. Jean Bolomey, one of the pioneers in the study of technology of concrete. Internationally recognised, Prof. Jean Bolomey was one of the first to establish the relationship between the strength of concrete and the water-to-cement ratio.

1949-1972 Professor Jean-Pierre Daxelhofer

During this period, many large dams were built in Switzerland and the laboratory essentially provided services to the industry.

1974-1978 Professor Jean-Pierre Delisle

During his short tenure, Jean-Pierre Delisle, a born teacher, focused on the development of undergraduate teaching and applied research.

1980-1989 Professor Folker H. Wittmann

The laboratory changed its name to the current one: Laboratory of Construction Materials. The research approach in construction materials became more fundamentally oriented.

1989-2001 Professor Christian Huet

Under his direction, the emphasis was placed on modelling the mechanical behaviour of construction materials.

2001- Professor Karen ScrivenerBorn in 1958 in the UK, Karen Scrivener has a degree in material science from the University of Cambridge (1979) and a PhD from Imperial College London (1983). From 1983 until 1995 she worked as Royal Society Research Fellow and lecturer at Imperial College London. In 1995, she joined Lafarge Centre de recherche near

Lyon (France) as Director of Research for aluminate cements and expert on concrete durability. Since 2001, Karen Scrivener has been the head of the Laboratory of Construction Materials. Her research interests are the hydration of cementitious materials, the interfacial transition zone in concrete, durability and sustainability of cementitious materials. In 2018, Karen Scrivener will celebrate her 60th birthday.
