Laboratory Animal Bacteriology

Coming Soon!

Handbook of Laboratory Animal BacteriologySecond EditionAxel Kornerup HansenUniversity of Copenhagen, Frederiksberg, Denmark

Dennis Sandris NielsenUniversity of Copenhagen, Frederiksberg, Denmark

About the First Edition:

“…this book provides precise methodology for the isolation and identification of bacteria that interfere with researchprotocols. It is logically organized, instructive, and progresses through animal sampling, bacterial culture, isolation, dif-ferentiation, and identification. … The book is a valuable guide to the bacteriological monitoring of rodent and rabbit research animal colonies.… It should be useful to laboratory animal health monitoring laboratories and to those needing overall information on how to perform labora-tory animal bacteriological procedures. It will also be of interest to facility managers, clinical veterinarians, veterinary pathologists, andresearchers interested in the management of organisms known to interfere with the colony health of rabbits and rodents used in research proto-cols”

—Contemporary Topics in Laboratory Animal Science, March 2000

This second edition of a bestseller covers how to isolate bacteria in laboratory rodents and rabbits to assist veterinary pathologists and other ani-mal caretakers in the management of these organisms. It emphasizes those bacteria known to interfere with research protocols, and offers meth-ods for isolation and differentiation among related bacteria. It also enables the user to isolate and identify bacteria that is a part of the normal floraof these animals. The book is for facility managers, clinical veterinarians, veterinary pathologists, and researchers.

The book provides information on the general aspects of bacteriology, how to sample and identify bacteria in the animals, and how these bacte-ria interfere with animal models and the methods used to investigate this. It then describes the various bacterial species to be found in laborato-ry rodents and rabbits. While this in the first edition was divided according to cultivation and Gram staining characteristics, which was the stan-dard at the time, it is now divided according to a more systematic phylum based approach, which the new molecular biological methods havemade standard. This means that bacterial species, previously regarded as closely related, now may appear in two different phyla. Also, these chap-ters cover a range of bacteria identified to be of importance in laboratory rodents and rabbits over the last 10-15 years.

Features:

• Defines, for each bacteria: the habitats, clinical importance, morphology, relevant media, physical, biochemical, and immunological characteristics, and molecular biology

• Includes new chapters on the Mechanisms Behind Bacterial Impact on Animal Models and on a Systematic Overview of Bacteria

• Expands greatly the chapter on Cultivation Methods and the Identification of Bacteria

• Offers tips on differentiating between related species of bacteria and explains proper staining techniques and serology

• Describes all bacterial species which may be isolated during routine investigations in rodents and rabbits
