Attendances
Effective Schools monitor, communicate and implement strategies to improve regular
school attendance, as this is a prerequisite for improving educational outcomes.
Please remember that it is vital for your child’s education that they come to school each
day of the week. We do understand that if your child is ill, then they need to stay at home
and rest, but please remember to send a note or ring the school office to inform us of
their absence.
Last year Labertouche Primary School produced a small attendance slip to assist parents
in notifying the school of your child’s absence. I have attached a copy with 6 of these to
the back of this newsletter. Please hold on to these and use when necessary. If you
require more, you can collect another copy from the office or download them from our
website. If your child has been absent, and you have not informed us of the reason, we
will send an attendance slip home for you to complete upon the day they come back to
school.
It’s cool to be at school!
NAPLAN The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) 2017 for Years 3 and 5 students will be held on Tuesday 9th May, Wednesday 10th May and Thursday 11th May. NAPLAN tests assess student knowledge and skills in Writing, Reading, Language Conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and Numeracy. The results of the tests provide information for students, parents, teachers and principals which can be used to improve student achievement. Support can be arranged for students with disabilities, if the student regularly uses similar support for classroom assessment tasks. Later in the year you will receive your child’s personal NAPLAN report. The report will de-scribe your child’s particular skills in Reading, Writing, Language Conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and Numeracy. The report will also show how your child per-formed in relation to national minimum standards. These describe the minimum acceptable standards for students across Australia.

Junior News Prep-Grade 2
Welcome back to Term 2, I hope everyone had a relaxing and enjoyable break. The junior students have settled straight back into the classroom routine and have been showing our school values of Learn, Care, Respect and Share which is fantastic to see. In maths we are starting the term with the topic of addition. Students have been learning different addition strategies including ‘friends of 10’, using ten frames, counting on, doubles, near doubles and using number lines. Our term theme is Australia. We started off the unit this week by trying to draw the Australian flag from memory. We had some attempts that came very close and others that were very creative! We looked at the parts of the flag and the meaning behind them and I challenged the students to try and spot The Southern Cross in the night sky. We have also been focusing on nouns and syllables this week. Try challenging your child when they are reading and see if they can point out the nouns in a sentence or count how many syllables there are in a word!

Senior News Grades 3-6
In Reading groups this week, students are looking at text features of non-fiction books. Text features help the reader to make sense of what they are reading and they include things like the Table of Contents and Glossary. Our theme this term is ‘Australia’ and some of the books we have looked at so far include Australian State Plants, Kangaroos and Boomerangs to name a few! In Maths, students began the new topic – Addition. Our Grade 3 / 4’s have been focussing on addition strategies such as doubling/halving, making ten, ten facts, chunking, near doubles and vertical addition. Our Grade 5 / 6’s have also been learning these strategies but are working with larger numbers in their calculations.
During writing, students have moved onto the genre of expositions. They are looking at different examples of persuasive texts and how to structure their writing using this genre. This week we will focus on writing some more pieces together before the students move onto independently writing their own piece. CAMP The grade 3 / 4’s had camp during the last week of Term 1. All students had a wonderful time, made new friends and they demonstrated our school values brilliantly. Well done! On 3-4 camp we went to Melbourne. On Wednesday we arrived at Federation Square, had a quick snack then walked to Hosiers Lane to see graffiti. It was very interesting to see all the graffiti everywhere and some kids got to do to their own graffiti. Then we went to a place where we could rest and have another snack. Then we went to a park with bamboo sticks and some girls did flips on them. Camp was so much fun! By Maddie
On Thursday at camp we got up and went to the Melbourne Art’s Centre and saw Mr. Stink and saw how the smoke came out of his jumper. Everyone loved watching Mr. Stink. I enjoyed it so much! By Aiva
Please remember to sign your child’s reading diary each night after they read their allocated
book.

Specialist News
Term one was a busy term. Thankyou to the families that donated newspapers and egg cartons to the art room. With lots of painting and clay last term we still have students without art smocks. Can you please be sure that your child has an art smock to protect their school uniform. In both the Junior and Senior grades, the children have been making sea creatures from clay. As these are being painted and completed models are being displayed at the sign in book. Please take the time to look at the children's art work. The term finished off very busy in sport with the Junior sports day at Jindivick and a netball incursion. Our children were enthusiastic in participating in both events and enjoyed the experience. Term 2 begins busy for the senior grade. We have our Senior Athletics day at the Geoff Watt track on the 1st of May. If any parents can help on the day please let me know. For those selected students, Division Athletics are in week 5 and Division Cross Country in week 6. Thank you Peta Waterhouse
TARAGO MARC LIBRARY This week, Mrs Collins began her first MARC Van lesson. All the students were very excited and had a wonderful time.
This term the students have commenced a unit on Australian. Mrs Collins will be focusing on Aboriginal dreamtime stories with the children. It should be a wonderful learning opportunity for the children.
Please remind your children to return their Marc Van
books when they are finished reading them.
Thank you

Fundraising Committee
Expression of interest
Dear Parents,
School council are requesting for parents who have an interest in helping with
school fundraising and to take part in our fundraising committee. Parents will be
required to attend a short meeting once a month or when required and assist
with fundraising events when they are organised.
In little schools, like Labertouche, it is imperative that we have successful and
fun fundraising activities to assist us in purchasing new or replacing items and
activities within our school.
If you are interested in assisting with this, please contact Wendy Cummins
(School Council President) or Jo Janssan (Vice President & Head of
Fundraising Committee).
Kind Regards
Corey Fleming
