    MOB practise

    MOB situations: "Immediate action" situation

    Casualty is noticed on the bridge and action

    is initiated immediately; "Delayed action" situation

    Casualty is reported to the bridge by an eyewitness and action is initiated with some

    delay; "Person missing" situation

    Person is reported to the bridge as "missing"

    Williamson turn

    OS is Full Speed Rudder hard over (in an

    "immediate action" situation,only to the side of the

    casualty). Engine remains at initial speed

    After deviation from theoriginal course by 60, rudder

    hard over to the opposite side. When heading 20 short of

    opposite course, rudder tomidship position.

    Scharnow turn(not to be used in an "immediate action" situation.)

    OS is Full Ahead

    Rudder hard over.

    Engine remains at initial speed

    After deviation from the originalcourse by 240, rudder hardover to the opposite side.

    When heading 20 short ofopposite course, rudder tomidship position so that shipwill turn to opposite course.

    Man overboard Checklist- Immediate Action -

    Release lifebuoy with light and smoke signal on the side thecrew member has fallen overboard

    Take immediate avoiding action so as not to run over the

    man overboard Sound three prolonged blasts of the ship's whistle and

    repeat as necessary

    Post a lookout with binoculars and instructions to maintain a

    continuous watch on the man overboard Hoist signal flag 'O'

    Commence a recovery manoeuvre, such as a Williamsonturn

    Engage hand steering, if helmsman available

    Note ship's position, wind speed and direction and time

    Inform master, if not already on the bridge

    Inform engine room Place engines on stand-by Muster rescue boat's crew

    launching

    Distribute portable VHF radios for communication

    Rig pilot ladder/nets to assist in the recovery

    Make ship's position available to radio room/GMDSSstation

    Broadcast DISTRESS message to ships in the vicinity

    If MRCC or other SAR organizations respond, be ready togive the following detailed Person Overboard IncidentInformation:

    a. name and callsign of ship with man overboard;

    b. position, course and speed of the ship;

    c. date, time and position when the person went overboard;

    d. if time of person overboard unknown, when last seen;

    e. weather conditions (include water temperature);

    f. persons name, age and gender;

    g. persons height and weight to determine survivability;

    h. persons physical/mental condition and swimming ability;

    i. persons clothing (amount and colour);

    j. height of fall from ship to water;

    k. lifejacket (worn, missing);

    l. has the ship been completely searched;

    m. will the ship search for the person overboard and, if so,

    for how long; n. radio frequencies in use, monitored or scheduled;

    o. whether an urgency broadcast is requested;

    p. assistance desired;

    q. assistance being received; r. initial reporter (parent agency, radio station,

    name/callsign of ship);

    s. other pertinent information.
