APPARATUS:

Diesel engine analyzer (4-stroke).

Solenoid valve.

Pressure sensor.

Temperature sensor.

Fuel tank.

Coolant (water).

THEORY:

In Diesel engine when the air is compressed, the fuel is sprayed after the compression stroke due to which

the fuel ignites and hence the power stroke occurs. The speed of engine is at how many revolutions per

minute the engine is rotating crank. In engine torque is measured by use of dynamometer. The

dynamometer is used to measure breaking torque by the increasing water level inside the dynamometer in

case of hydraulic dynamometer. There are other dynamometers as well in which the torque is measured

by touch engine output (rotor) with a stator of dynamometer. Once the speed and torque of engine is

measured it is used to calculate power. Power is the rate of energy transfer to or from the system. One can

think of power as rate of doing work. Speed of engine is a rotational frequency. Indicated power is the

theoretical power which is set by designer by maximum calculated power. This power is usually

calculated from PV diagram. However the brake power is measured at the output including all losses.

There is a relation between power and torque

𝑃=2𝜋𝑁𝑇

PROCEDURE:

First of all turn non engine analyzer. Then the fuel flow meter was turned on and air tank intake was properly checked. Then with coil starter start engine analyzer. Note the reading from analyzing software in computer. At different speeds we measured

torques. So speed and torque collectively gave us power.

TABLE:

SPEED (rpm) TORQUE (Nm) POWER (watt) 1137 3.2 381.0 1881 5.4 1063 2719 6.7 1907 3193 6.4 2140 3664 5.7 2187

Discussions Conclusions:

In this introductory practical of internal combustion engine lab it is observed that what the diesel engine

analyzer is and how it works. And also the main parts of the engine analyzer 4-stroke diesel engine. And

how to run a diesel engine analyzer and got reading procedure. And measurement of torque, power and

speed and their relations and by plotting them on graph and checks the curves behavior between them.

Finally it is concluded that the practical is performed successfully.
