New Program Chair

We welcome Julie Morang to our board as our new Program Chair! Although Julie grew up in St. Clair Shores and has resided in Grosse Pointe Park for the past 25 years, she is proud to say she was born in Detroit. Her family roots are deep on Detroit’s east side. From the first married couple, Mary Noblet and George Young (Jung), who immigrated here in the early 1800’s from Alsace-Lorraine, France, there are now over 600 descendants. One of the famous Young

descendants was Caspar Salter who was the first settler of Harper Woods. In addition, her great-great-great-grandfather on the Morang side, who also immigrated from Alsace-Lorraine in the 1850’s, had a 600 acre farm which was later named Morang Avenue along with the street Duchess (named after his favorite horse).

As a junior in college, Julie studied architecture and painting in France at the famous L’Ecole des Beaux Arts summer program in Fontainebleau. While there, the architecture and painting students did a combined final project with the international music students under the direction of the famous music composer/conductor, Madame Nadia Boulanger, who headed up the music studies at Fontainebleau. Julie has had a love of France ever since and is a true Francophile.

Julie is semi-retired from her own real estate business and retired from architectural design. She worked at a major Detroit architectural firm designing interiors of banks, churches, corporate headquarters and university buildings. Julie has a daughter, Alyssa, who is a graphic designer in California. Julie has many outside interests: travel (28 countries), active year-round tennis player, kayaker, boater, biker and gardener and has a passion for all of the arts.

She is excited about the upcoming year with Alliance Française de Grosse Pointe and hopes to tie in her love of architecture and history with a tour of some of Detroit’s architectural gems.
