“But just as you excel in everything – in faith,in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnest-ness and in your love for us – see that you alsoexcel in this grace of giving.”

(2 Corinthians 8:7)

he Centennial Olympics are history. Themedia focused on stories of athletes whohave pushed the envelope of the limits ofhuman performance. We enjoy hearing

about those who rise above the average. But ourchallenge as Jesus’ disciples is to be among thosewho rise above the crowd. With over 82,000 disci-ples in the Kingdom worldwide, more and morepeople of “star” status are becoming disciples.Because the challenges of people in the mediaspotlight are unique, ministries to meet the needsof those in the arts, media and sports (AMS) weredeveloped. The AMS ministry was pioneered firstin the New York City Church by Steve & LisaJohnson. Now, under the guidance of David &Coleen Graham, the AMS ministries have begun tospread into many churches all over the world.

Last month the AMS World Tour II Conferencewas held in Hollywood. The conference provided anincredible showcase of the professional talent that isnow a part of God’s movement around the globe. However, the attendees didn’t come to be seen, theycame to learn how to grow and excel as disciples intheir fields. The conference included workshops forsongleaders and those involved with KNN. A highlightwas a one-night workshop on building family taughtby the Kip McKean family. This issue of LA Storyfocuses on the conference and AMS ministries.

STILL WORLD CHAMPIONLuisito Espinosa, your brother in Christ, is the

World Boxing Council Featherweight Championof the World. While Gloria and I were in Manila inearly July to do some teaching in the church,Luisito made his first title defense against thenumber one contender, Cesar Soto, from Mexico.

Something that happened to Luisito made meleave the Philippines with a new conviction.

In 1991, before becoming a disciple, Luisitowas the World Bantamweight Champion. In oneof his title-defense fights, he was heavily favoredto win. However, when he lost, many of his fellowFilipinos considered this to be a national disgraceand Luisito was shunned. He had problems evenfinding a gym where he was allowed to work out.He clawed his way back, finally winning the WorldFeatherweight Championship earlier this year inTokyo. In July, Luisito was about to have his firsttitle-defense back in his own country as a disciple. The pressure on him to win was intense. PrestonShepherd, Lead Evangelist forthe Manila Church and RodelGonzales, leader of theManila AMS ministry, went tosee Luisito the morning of thefight. When they asked himhow he was doing spiritually,Luisito said he was reallyafraid of losing. He felt hecould not deal with the pub-lic humiliation that would beeven worse than it was fiveyears earlier. These brothersreassured Luisito that thingswere different now that he isa disciple. They told him thathe is now in a family ofChristians who would lovehim whether he won or lost! His value is no longer depen-dent on how he performs.Luisito went into the fightthat night with a tremendousburden lifted.

Before a boxing world-record crowd of200,000 - 300,000 fans, Luisito defeated Soto in a12-round unanimous decision! So impressive washis win that the president of the World Boxing

Council said that the video of the fight will be usedby the WBC as an example of a classic boxingvictory. A joyful Fidel Ramos, President of thePhilippines, was one of the first to congratulateLuisito. I am convinced that the encouragementof Preston and Rodel made the differencebetween his winning and losing. They providedLuisito with a “safe place.”

YOUR SAFE PLACEProbably none of us will ever feel the intense

pressure that Luisito felt to win that fight, but weeach need a safe place just as much as he did thatnight. The pressures of life are intense for us all;

the fear of failure dogs us.Every disciple should have atleast one relationship in thechurch that is so close thatwe can be totally real with-out any fear of rejection. Thatis a safe place. Too many ofus go through our day pre-tending to be someone thatwe are not because we areafraid to be real. Until wecan admit who we are tosomeone who can help us,we have little hope of growinginto the person God wants usto be. Do you have someonewho provides that safe placefor you? Are you a safeplace for someone else?

May it be said of usone day, as it was of theCorinthian disciples, that weexcelled in everything. Only

then will we reach our goal of making disciplesof all nations. Then as we stand before our God,we can expect to hear his words, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” That’s the reason I’mTAKIN’ IT HIGHER. ■

“Whatever you do, work at it with all yourheart, as working for the Lord...”

Colossians 3:23

t is time for the church to define ‘Generation X,’” stated Kip McKean in the Family Workshop at the AMS World Tour II Conference. A family truly living by the Scriptures powerfully

spoke before an audience of 2,000 at the famousPantages Theater in Hollywood. Kip, Elena, Olivia(15), Sean (13) and Eric (11) told how theirfocus on God and his Word has helped them to succeed as a family andhave fun while doing it.With candid openness, each person shared howGod has worked on theweaknesses in his or herown life and has given themmajor victories.

SEANSean, president of his student body and

currently ranked 50 in Southern California boys14 singles tennis, began humorously sharingabout having fun as a family. He asked thekids in the audience if they were happy, thenchallenged them to obey their parents.Ephesians 6:1 was developed powerfully asSean concluded that “happiness is not thegoal, heaven is!”

ERIC“You’ve got to risk it to win it,” claimed

Eric, ranked national tennis player forthe 10 to 12 age group in SouthernCalifornia. He shared how he learnedto overcome negative thinking and to

take risks in faith. Daily quiet times withhis Dad have pulled him through many

tough times.

OLIVIA Olivia dynamically shared how she was tempted

to quit tennis after losing nine times in a row. But herparents encouraged her to apply Philippians 4:13, “Ican do everything through Him who gives mestrength.” At that time, she also learned to persevereto be fruitful in her evangelism. Since then, Olivia hasexcelled in tennis, ranking 50 regionally in girls 14singles by the end of 1995, is an outstanding leader inher class and she has been personally fruitful onseveral occasions.

ELENA “Daily impress your children with God,” said

Elena. Reminding us that the world is always tryingto entice our children, she challenged us to keep ourpriorities in order. It is essential to give our childrensecurity and show them the way to “Never forgetGod. Then our children will be impressed withGod and they will be impressive to the world.”

KIPKip stressed the importance of calling each

child to God through daily discipling and personalinvolvement in their lives. He challenged us asdisciples to work with our children to help thembe relatable and excellent in everything. “Wemust keep our families spiritual, open and fun.”

The McKean children all make straight Asin school and excel in athletics and leadershipamong their peers. But their most impressive traitis their love for God. While leading the LA Churchand helping ministries grow all over the world,Kip & Elena are daily involved in their lives. It istruly encouraging to see the leaders of God’smodern-day movement setting a dynamic familyexample of excellence in everything. ■

“SHINING LIKE STARS”

SPECIALIZED MINISTRIESSPECIALIZED MINISTRIESecently, LIFE magazine published its listof the “50 Most Influential Baby Boomers.”Topping the list was not a head of stateor a business mogul, but entertainment

giant Steven Spielberg. More than any other pro-fession, people in the arts, media, entertainmentand sports affect popular culture in the UnitedStates and around the world. Imaginea disciple of Jesus Christ on such a listand the amount of influence for God onall of civilization!

Opinion leaders have great tal-ent and ability, but their industriesoften bring out worldliness, pride, selfish ambition and enormousinsecurity. Specialized ministries inour churches provide an outlet ofsupport and discipling for people inthese situations. Disciples convertedand raised up in this environmenthave become leaders in churchesaround the world.

Supportive church leaders areessential to a great specialized ministry.Early in God’s modern-day movement, visionaries such as Steve Johnson andKip McKean understood the need forspecialized ministries. When the NewYork City Church began, many opinionleaders were in the entertainmentbusiness but their unusual schedulesprevented them from taking full advan-tage of the fellowship. Steve Johnsonbegan the “Daytime” ministry, aprototype for AMS (Arts, Media,Sports), to meet the needs of actorsand dancers who worked nights andneeded more services and Bible Talksduring weekdays.

In Los Angeles, Kip McKean expandedthe concept to include professional athletes. He and Elena discipled Dave and Coleen Graham, teaching them how to build the AMS ministry.Through the generosity of a disciple, the youngLA Church was able to buy the Upside Down Clubin Hollywood to reach out to the entertainmentcapital of the world. The AMS ministry thatbegan in 1990 with just three disciples, nowhas over 1,000 in attendance on Sundays and

has spawned the South Central ministry led byCory and Megan Blackwell. In 1995, the AMSministry was one of the leading regions in theLA Church in growth, retention and contribution.

There are currently 25 AMS ministriesaround the world and the number is rapidlygrowing. The second annual AMS World Tour II

Conference brought together disciples fromcities all over the world sharing their talents, their ideas and their heart.

Many people in these influential indus-tries are known for their tragic personal lives. But in the middle of this darkness, talented disciples walk in Jesus’ steps. Thesebrothers and sisters truly “shine like stars inthe universe.” ■

“SHINING LIKE STARS”Christian Ray

Christian Ray’s career as a songwriter, singer and dancer has taken off in Moscow, theCommonwealth of Independent States and Europe.

But his life has been soaring evenhigher after being baptized as adisciple in December 1995 by AndyFleming, leader of the churches inthat region of the world. Since then,Christian has baptized his mother, sister, cousin and wardrobe designer.Sacrificing a lucrative gig to attendthe AMS Conference in LA, ChristianRay’s energetic performance reflectedhis passion for the Kingdom.

Larry JacksonLarry Jackson is the gifted bass

player and leader of the award-winning Boston band EYE 2 EYE.When Larry came face to face withthe Word of God in January 1989,he knew that his days as an atheistwere numbered. By April, Larry wasbaptized by Dave Graham and RogerLamb. By the following September hehad written the song Lord of All, oneof the most moving songs of theKingdom. Larry and his wife, Carrie, are now the shepherding couple forthe AMS ministry in Boston.

B.J. FosterAfter only two weeks in New YorkCity, B.J. was hired for a Broadway

role in the musical Into the Woods.B.J. exemplifies what AMS is all

about. Met while already a successful actress,B.J. says that being a true disciple has nowhelped her to rebuild her scattered life on asolid foundation. She continues to play roles oninternational television, shows, commercials aswell as film. But she gives her whole heart toGod by serving as a Women’s Ministry Leaderin the AMS Region of the LA Church along withher husband Kai. ■

“One half of all the people who have ever livedon the planet are alive right now. As we defineChristianity for nations around the globe, we mustreport and record this history.” This statement byRoger Lamb, Director of Media for the InternationalChurches of Christ, kicked off the first KNN MediaForum held during the AMS World Tour IIConference. Disciples spoke on different ways to usethe media to spread the message of the gospel anddocument God’s movement in our day.

THE WEBIn order to reach the vastly growing worldwide

web of people on the internet, Russ Ewell, Evangelistfor the San Francisco Church, opened a new field for“Kingdom Cyberspace” with the creation of the website for the International Churches of Christ. Theweb site, (http://www.intlcc.com), is under thedirection of Al Baird, Media/Law World SectorLeader with Roger Lamb as the Editor.Administrator Alan Aubert of SanFrancisco, who spoke to the Forum,

says that the web site had 25,000 hits in its firstthree months of existence. The objective of the siteis to help smaller churches stay connected andinformed, to use this technology to reach third worldcountries and to help long distance communicationbetween churches.

NEWS VIDEOKNN video news magazine brings the latest news

of the Kingdom to 246 churches in 90 countries inten languages. ACES Media is a great model of howa world sector has produced news videos in threelanguages to encourage and inform the discipleswithin their own world sector. Upside DownVideo is produced by Declan Joyce and directedby Perry Lawrence from the New York CityChurch. At the KNN Media Forum, Declan showedhow they were able to use a different format on asmaller budget.

Anthony Galang, English anchor forKNN and Evangelist of the Central regionof the LA Church, summed up the King-dom media’s crucial role: “The media

ministry is vital to unifyingall of us in the Kingdomas we communicate all ofGod’s great works around
