“Unwrapping Our Gifts: Part IV"

Reception of New MembersBrothers and sisters in Christ: Through the Sacrament of Baptism we are

initiated into Christ's holy church. We are incorporated into God's mighty

acts of salvation and given new birth through water and the Spirit. All this

is God's gift, offered to us without price.

Through confirmation, and the reaffirmation of our faith, we renew the

covenant declared at our baptism, acknowledge what God is doing for us,

and affirm our commitment to Christ's holy church.

Presentation of Candidates

On behalf of the whole church, I ask you:

Do you renounce the spiritual forces of wickedness, reject the evil powers

of this world, and repent of your sin?

I do.

Do you accept the freedom and power God gives you to resist evil,

injustice, and oppression in whatever forms they present themselves?

I do.

Do you confess Jesus Christ as your Savior, put your whole trust in his

Page 8: La Plata United Methodist Church · Silent Prayers, Pastoral Prayer The Lord’s Prayer (Together) Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will

grace, and promise to serve him as your Lord, in union with the church

which Christ has opened to people of all ages, nations, and races?

I do.

According to the grace given to you, will you remain faithful members of

Christ's holy church and serve as Christ's representatives in the world?

I will.

The Pastor turns to the congregation and asks:

Do you, as Christ's body, the church, reaffirm both your rejection of sin and

your commitment to Christ?

We do.

Will you nurture one another in the Christian faith and life and include

these persons now before you in your care?

With God's help we will proclaim the good news and live according

to the example of Christ. We will surround these persons with a

community of love and forgiveness, and they may grow in their

trust of God, and be found faithful in their service to others. We will

pray for them, that they walk in the way that leads to life.

Let us join together in professing the Christian faith as contained in the

scriptures of the Old and New Testament:

Do you believe in God?

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

Do you believe in Jesus Christ?

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord who was conceived

by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius

Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.

He descended to the dead.

On the Third Day he rose again, ascended into heaven,

is seated at the right hand of the Father, and will come again to

judge the living and the dead.

Do you believe in the Holy Spirit?

I believe in the Holy Spirit

the holy Catholic Church

the Communion of Saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

Page 9: La Plata United Methodist Church · Silent Prayers, Pastoral Prayer The Lord’s Prayer (Together) Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will

the resurrection of the body

and the life everlasting, Amen.

THANKSGIVING OVER THE WATEREternal Father: When nothing existed but chaos, you swept across the dark

waters and brought forth light. In the days of Noah you saved those on the

ark through water. After the flood you set in the clouds a rainbow. When

you saw your people as slaves in Egypt, you led them to freedom through

the sea. Their children you brought through the Jordan to the land which

you promised.

Sing to the Lord, all the earth. Tell of God's mercy each day.

In the fullness of time you sent Jesus, nurtured in the water of a womb.

He was baptized by John and anointed by your Spirit. He called his

disciples to share in the baptism of his death and resurrection and to make

disciples of all nations.

Declare Christ's works to the nations, his glory among all the

people.

Pour out your Holy Spirit and by this gift of water, call to our remembrance

the grace declared to us at our baptism. For you have washed away our

sins and you clothe us with righteousness throughout our lives, that dying

and being raised with Christ, we may share in his final victory.

Remember your baptism and be thankful.

Amen.

The Pastor turns again to the candidates:

Now as members of Christ's Universal Church, will you be loyal to Christ

through The United Methodist Church, and do all in your power to

strengthen its ministries?

I will.

Then as members of this congregation, will you faithfully participate in its

ministries and support it by your prayers, your presence, your gifts, your

service, and your witness?

I will.

Returning to the congregation, the Pastor says:

Page 10: La Plata United Methodist Church · Silent Prayers, Pastoral Prayer The Lord’s Prayer (Together) Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will

Members of the household of God, I commend these persons to your love

and care. Do all in your power to increase their faith, confirm their hope,

and perfect them in love.

We give thanks for all that God has already given you and we

welcome you in Christian love. As members together with you in

the body of Christ and in this congregation of The United Methodist

Church, we renew our covenant faithfully to participate in the

ministries of the church and support it by our prayers, our

presence, our gifts, our service, and our witness; that in everything

God may be glorified through Jesus Christ.

Now may the God of all grace, who has called us to eternal glory in Christ,

establish you and strengthen you by the power of the Holy Spirit, that you

may live in grace and peace.

The Scripture LessonsEpistle Lesson 1 Timothy 4: 7-16 (NIV)Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales; rather, train

yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has

value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to

come. This is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance. That is why we

labor and strive, because we have put our hope in the living God, who is the

Savior of all people, and especially of those who believe.

Command and teach these things. Don’t let anyone look down on you because

you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in

love, in faith and in purity.

Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching

and to teaching. Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through

prophecy when the body of elders laid their hands on you.

Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may

see your progress. Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them,

because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.

Esther 4: 7-16 (NIV) Mordecai told him everything that had happened to him, including the exact

amount of money Haman had promised to pay into the royal treasury for the

destruction of the Jews. He also gave him a copy of the text of the edict for their

annihilation, which had been published in Susa, to show to Esther and explain

it to her, and he told him to instruct her to go into the king’s presence to beg for

mercy and plead with him for her people.

Hathak went back and reported to Esther what Mordecai had said. Then she

instructed him to say to Mordecai, “All the king’s officials and the people of the

royal provinces know that for any man or woman who approaches the king in

the inner court without being summoned the king has but one law: that they be

put to death unless the king extends the gold scepter to them and spares their

lives. But thirty days have passed since I was called to go to the king.” When

Esther’s words were reported to Mordecai, he sent back this answer: “Do not

think that because you are in the king’s house you alone of all the Jews will

escape. For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews

will arise from another place, but you and your father’s family will perish. And

who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as

this?” Then Esther sent this reply to Mordecai: “Go, gather together all the Jews

who are in Susa, and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or

day. I and my attendants will fast as you do. When this is done, I will go to the

king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish.”

FAITH SHARINGHAS GOD BLESSED YOU? - When God answers our prayers, or provideshealing, or helps us find a job or get a promotion; when God has touched ourlives – we have a responsibility to tell others what God has done. This is agreat way to start a conversation about our faith with those who know us. Tellthem how you feel about being touched by God, or how God has answeredyour prayers.

PLEASE INVITE YOUR FRIENDS - It is the simplest and most effective way toshare Christ with others: just invite your friends to church with you. Mostpeople who grew up as Christians and who aren't in a church say they justhaven't found a church they like, and because no one has invited them. Mostpeople if you ask, will say yes to an invitation. Just ask them to come to churchfor a special event, or special Sunday, or to hear a sermon you think will helpthem.

MAKE A NEW FRIEND TODAY - As you enter Church today to worship, lookaround and see if you can find someone you don't know. During Passing of thePeace, make a point to introduce yourself to them and invite them to join youin an activity of the Church. If you can't get to them during the Passing of thePeace, hang around for a bit after worship and strike up a conversation withthem. In time you'll discover if they are long lost members, or here for the firsttime. Either way, you get to make a new friend. Thank you for being one ofthe friendliest and most caring congregations around.

ADMINISTRATIONSTEWARDSHIP - Please be sure that the outer doors close firmly and arelocked when you leave the building. Turn out the lights when you leave aroom. Turn off the heat/air conditioner in the room you are using. These areall things we can do to keep our building secure, our members safe, and ouroperating costs down.

INCLEMENT WEATHER - The church office follows the Charles County PublicSchool inclement weather police. If schools are delayed 2 hours, we will openat 10:00. If schools are closed, we will be closed as well.
