The Message Rev. Dr. Susan E Boehl“Unwrapping Our Gifts: Part III”

Reception of New MembersBrothers and sisters in Christ: Through the Sacrament of Baptism weare initiated into Christ's holy church. We are incorporated into God'smighty acts of salvation and given new birth through water and theSpirit. All this is God's gift, offered to us without price.

Through confirmation, and the reaffirmation of our faith, we renew thecovenant declared at our baptism, acknowledge what God is doing forus, and affirm our commitment to Christ's holy church.

On behalf of the whole church, I ask you:Do you renounce the spiritual forces of wickedness, reject the evilpowers of this world, and repent of your sin?I do.

Do you accept the freedom and power God gives you to resist evil, injustice, and oppression in whatever forms they present themselves?I do.

Page 4: La Plata United Methodist Church...Christ through The United Methodist Church, and do all in your power to strengthen its ministries? I will. Then as members of this congregation,

Do you confess Jesus Christ as your Savior, put your whole trust in hisgrace, and promise to serve him as your Lord, in union with the churchwhich Christ has opened to people of all ages, nations, and races?I do.

According to the grace given to you, will you remain faithful membersof Christ's holy church and serve as Christ's representatives in theworld?I will.

The Pastor turns to the congregation and asks:Do you, as Christ's body, the church, reaffirm both your rejection of sinand your commitment to Christ? We do.

Will you nurture one another in the Christian faith and life and includethese persons now before you in your care? With God's help we will proclaim the good news and live according tothe example of Christ. We will surround these persons with acommunity of love and forgiveness, and they may grow in their trustof God, and be found faithful in their service to others. We will prayfor them, that they walk in the way that leads to life.

Let us join together in professing the Christian faith as contained in thescriptures of the Old and New Testament:Do you believe in God?I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

Do you believe in Jesus Christ?I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord who was conceived bythe Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead.On the Third Day he rose again, ascended into heaven, is seated at the right hand of the Father, and will come again to judgethe living and the dead.

Page 5: La Plata United Methodist Church...Christ through The United Methodist Church, and do all in your power to strengthen its ministries? I will. Then as members of this congregation,

THANKSGIVING OVER THE WATEREternal Father: When nothing existed but chaos, you swept across thedark waters and brought forth light. In the days of Noah you savedthose on the ark through water. After the flood you set in the clouds arainbow. When you saw your people as slaves in Egypt, you led them tofreedom through the sea. Their children you brought through the Jordanto the land which you promised.Sing to the Lord, all the earth. Tell of God's mercy each day.In the fullness of time you sent Jesus, nurtured in the water of a womb.He was baptized by John and anointed by your Spirit. He called hisdisciples to share in the baptism of his death and resurrection and tomake disciples of all nations.Declare Christ's works to the nations, his glory among all the people.

Pour out your Holy Spirit and by this gift of water, call to ourremembrance the grace declared to us at our baptism. For you havewashed away our sins and you clothe us with righteousness throughoutour lives, that dying and being raised with Christ, we may share in hisfinal victory.

Remember your baptism and be thankful. Amen.

The Pastor turns again to the candidates:Now as members of Christ's Universal Church, will you be loyal toChrist through The United Methodist Church, and do all in your powerto strengthen its ministries?I will.

The Scripture LessonsPsalm 1 (NIV)Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the

way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers,

but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day

and night.

That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in

season and whose leaf does not wither— whatever they do prospers.

Not so the wicked! They are like chaff that the wind blows away.

Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,

Nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.

For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous,

but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.

1 Peter 4: 7-11 (NIV)The end of all things is near. Therefore be alert and of sober mind so that you

may pray. Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a

multitude of sins. Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. Each of

you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful

stewards of God's grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, they should do so

as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so

with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised

through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever.

Amen.

FINDING OUR WAY FORWARD - On February 23-26 in St Louis, MO, theUnited Methodist denomination will convene a special session of GeneralConference to discuss and make decisions regarding a way forward in ministrywith and for the LGBTQ community. As so often is the case, sides have beenchosen and unfortunately persons and words on both sides of this issue havebeen hurtful to others. I believe that prayer is the most powerful of tools thatJesus gave us and that ,at this point, prayer is the best way to intervene intothe heart of all involved in our denominations' scheduled meeting. To that end,The Prayer Partners have organized a Prayer Vigil during the duration of themeeting. Sign up sheets will be coming around and a large scalerepresentation of the available prayer times will be on the wall in the commonarea. I hope that you will agree to take ONE OR MORE prayer slots and prayfor our denomination. You do not have to come to the church to pray. You maypray wherever you are. All we ask is that you take the task of prayer seriously.God is ready to give us God's full attention when we pray. Let us pray faithfullyto the Lord who knows all...and yet still wants to know from us what is in ourheart.

FAITH SHARINGHAS GOD BLESSED YOU? - When God answers our prayers, or provideshealing, or helps us find a job or get a promotion; when God has touched ourlives – we have a responsibility to tell others what God has done. This is agreat way to start a conversation about our faith with those who know us. Tellthem how you feel about being touched by God, or how God has answeredyour prayers.

PLEASE INVITE YOUR FRIENDS - It is the simplest and most effective way toshare Christ with others: just invite your friends to church with you. Mostpeople who grew up as Christians and who aren't in a church say they justhaven't found a church they like, and because no one has invited them. Mostpeople if you ask, will say yes to an invitation. Just ask them to come to churchfor a special event, or special Sunday, or to hear a sermon you think will helpthem.

MAKE A NEW FRIEND TODAY - As you enter Church today to worship, lookaround and see if you can find someone you don't know. During Passing of thePeace, make a point to introduce yourself to them and invite them to join youin an activity of the Church. If you can't get to them during the Passing of thePeace, hang around for a bit after worship and strike up a conversation withthem. In time you'll discover if they are long lost members, or here for the firsttime. Either way, you get to make a new friend. Thank you for being one ofthe friendliest and most caring congregations around.
