LA MAGIA DE MAZATLÁN

Sentado en un café al aire libre en la Plazuela Machado, justo después del atardecer, pedí un coctel mientras los músicos tocaban rela-jante música de jazz. Noctámbulos bien ves-

tidos caminan cerca, de camino a la presentación de ballet en el teatro histórico. Observando esta sofisticada escena urbana nocturna, desarrollada contra un telón de fondo de arquitectura del si-glo XIX, prístinamente restaurado, sería sencillo olvidar que Mazatlán también es un excelente destino turístico por sus hermosas playas.

La combinación de playa, historia y cultura de Mazatlán es lo que lo hace tan especial. El mejor lugar para disfrutar del sol sucede en la Zona Do-rada, donde las anchas fajas de arena se alinean con los grandes hoteles. Las actividades más so-corridas aquí son los deportes acuáticos, así como las excursiones a la Isla de Venados, una de las varias playas vírgenes que se extienden a lo largo de la costa. Los tours en catamarán, operados por la compañía Aires Fleet, parten del Hotel de Playa Cid Marina, que incluye bebidas, almuerzo, bu-ceo, voleibol de playa, y el paseo en banana.

El transporte también es una característica única de Mazatlán. Mientras otras ciudades cuen-tan con taxis (o Uber), solamente Mazatlán cuen-ta con la pulmonía, un peculiar vehículo abierto, basado en un diseño de carrito de golf, que pasea a los visitantes en los alrededores de la ciudad.

Sitting at an outdoor café on the Plazuela Mach-ado just after dark, I sipped a creatively crafted cocktail as live musicians played soothing jazz music. Nearby, well-dressed night owls strolled past the arts academy, on their way to a ballet per-formance at a historic theater. Observing this so-phisticated urban night scene, played out against a backdrop of pristinely restored 19th-century ar-chitecture, it would be easy to forget that Mazat-lan also happens to be a great beach destination.

Mazatlan’s enticing blend of sun, sand, histo-ry, and culture is what makes it so special and, indeed, different from other Mexican beach desti-nations. Most of the sun worshipping takes place in the Zona Dorada, the Golden Zone, where wide stretches of sand are lined with large, resort-style hotels. Water sports and sunbathing are favored activities here, as are daytime excursions to Deer Island (Isla de Venados), one of several unspoiled islands that lie just off the coast. Catamaran ex-cursions, operated by a company called Aires Fleet, depart from the El Cid Marina Beach Hotel, with drinks, lunch, snorkeling, beach volleyball, and banana boat rides all included.

Transportation is another unique feature about Mazatlan. Other cities have taxis or perhaps Uber, but Mazatlan is home to the pulmonía —a delightfully quirky, open-air vehicle, often based on a golf cart, that whisks visitors around the city.

No hay nada como sentir la brisa en la cara mientras viajas en una pulmonía a lo largo del es-cénico malecón. Y justo esta ruta te llevará a otro punto obligado en ésta parte de la ciudad: el Cen-tro Histórico. Olas de renovación en las recientes décadas le han traído una nueva vida, y edi-ficios del período neo-clásico y la arquitectu-ra del Barroco francés, ahora albergan tiendas únicas, galerías de arte, y restaurantes.

La Basílica de la In-maculada Concepción proporciona un asom-broso punto de refe-rencia para explorar el centro de la ciudad. Desde ahí, camino ha-cia la Plazuela Macha-do, la más encantadora de la ciudad. Revestido con pintorescos locales para cenar, como Pedro y Lola, este eje urbano se encuentra a solo unos pasos del Teatro Ángela Pe-ralta, un centro de espectáculos del siglo XIX, be-llamente renovado, que organiza una variedad de presentaciones dramáticas, musicales, y de baile.

The double spires of the Basilica de la In-maculada Concepción, Mazatlan’s cathedral, provide a stunning central landmark for exploring downtown. From there, I usually walk over to Plazuela

Machado, Mazatlan’s most charming city square. Lined with picturesque dining venues like Pedro y Lola, this elegant urban hub makes for great people watching –and it’s just a few steps from the Ángela Peralta Theater, a beautifully refurbished 19th-century showplace that hosts a variety of dramatic, dance and musical performances.

Sinaloa proporcionan aún más opciones. Entre las excursiones más emocionantes, está la visi-ta a Vinata Los Osuna, una pequeña fábrica de mezcal que ofrece visitas guiadas y catas. Situa-da en la misma región, se encuentra Huana Coa Canopy Adventures, que cuenta con 12 tirolesas que ofrecen una espectacular oportunidad de deslizarse sobre las laderas de las montañas de la Sierra Madre.

También es posible viajar a través del tiempo en pueblos cercanos como El Quelite, que en si-glos previos fungió como punto de comercio para los mineros, y las aldeas mineras del siglo XVI de Concordia y Copala, donde las artesanías y manualidades se encuentran entre los tesoros de hoy en día, esperando ser encontrados.

Mientras tanto, los amantes de la naturaleza deben agendar un recorrido hacia el sur, a las al-deas pesqueras de Escuinapa y Teacapan, donde las excursiones guiadas en barco permiten una visión cercana de la abundante flora y fauna, la cual incluye ocelotes, venados, y garzas blancas y rosadas.

Ya sea por su naturaleza, su cultura, o su histo-ria, Mazatlán y sus cercanos pueblos nunca dejan de sorprender.

lan is likely the only beach destination in Mexico where visitors can spend a day in the sun and the evening in a landmark historic theater. And that’s one of the reasons why I love it.

As if the city of Mazatlan didn’t offer enough to fill any vacation itinerary, the surrounding region in the state of Sinaloa provides still more options. Among the most exciting excursions is a visit to Vinata Los Osuna, a small mezcal facto-ry that offers tours and tastings. Situated on the same grounds is Huana Coa Canopy Adventures, which has 12 zip lines that offer a breathtaking opportunity to glide above the foothills of the Sierra Madre Mountains.

Visitors can also travel back in time in nearby towns like El Quelite, which in previous centu-ries served as a trading post for miners, and the 16th-century mining villages of Concordia and Copala, where arts and crafts are among the pres-ent-day treasures waiting to be found.

Nature lovers, meanwhile, should schedule a trip south, to the fishing villages of Escuinapa and Teacapan, where guided boat tours allow up-close views of the abundant flora and fauna, which includes ocelots, deer, and pink and white herons. Whether it’s nature, culture, or history, Mazatlan and its surrounding towns never cease to amaze.
