These kinds of programs aredifferent from other schools inthe region, in that ecology is not

just taught in the classroom, itis practiced on campus and theparents are included.

Victors interest of environmental issues is agreat benet to the school and community ofCanoa. Issues such as garbage disposal incoastal areas of the country are challengesto emerging sectors such as tourism, whichthe community of Canoa is increasingly moredependent.

Just like everywhere else in theworld, developing communities heremust make changes to oudated and

unsustainable practices. And Victoris making sure that the schoolis a leader in these endeavors.

In addition to being the Director of La Escuelalos Algarrobos, Victor Leonardo AnguloMurillo, is also working towards his Mastersin Education Management at UniversidadEstatal del Sur de Manabi. Victors thesis? TheProtection and Conservation of the Environment.

A child who is hungry cannot learn. A child who cannot learn mightdrop out of school. A child without an education will not be able to get

a good job. A child without a job may turn to crime.

At La Escuela losAlgarrobosphysicaleducation classes areconducted twice a week foreach grade. Teachers andstudents alike can be seenrunning in a line around thecampus, weaving betweenswing sets and trees, rotatingtheir arms, smiling and gettingtheir heart rates up.

Calisthenics, strength buildingexercises and playing soccer areall a part of the schools physicaleducation program. Sports likesoccer teach team work from avery early age, as well as help todevelop sportsmanlike behavior inthe children.

Soccer is an Ecuadorian passionand a game is often found duringrecess at the school.

Recess is a time torun and play andfor a half hour eachschool day, the kidsdo just that. These

children have a lot ofenergy to burn.

Physical activity improves kids tness andlowers their risk of obesity. And now researchshows that children who take breaks from theirclass work to be physically active during theschool day are often better able to concentrateon their school work. They may even do betteron exams.

    International ChildrensDay

    www.jamesdeanbyrdfoundation.org

Special EventsFirst Graders Learn Hand WashingMaija Strombergand Sheryl Penderfound a fun and exciting way to teachyoung children the proper method tohand cleanliness. A special soap - ablack light - and lots of singing!

Using the special soap, the childrenwashed their hands and then put

    them inside a black-lighted box.

Anything showing up as orange wasthe dirt and bacteria we all carry on ourhands, ngers and under our nails.

On Friday, June 6th, we celebrated El Diadel Nioat La Escuela los Algarrobos.Profesora Aracely Fallanbegan the eventwith a history of International Childrens Day,which was declared a holiday by the UnitedNations in the 1940s.

Then, Maija and Sheryl taught thechildren the proper method to washtheir hands. The children then returnedto see their hands under the blacklight.

Proper handwashing has beena major theme here at LaEscuela los Algarrobosoverthe past year. So when 13 rstgrade students arrived this past

April for the start of school, the rst order of business wasteaching them how to washtheir hands correctly!

TheHand Washing Programwas developed nine monthsago by two USA-trainedRegistered Nurses who live inCanoa.

This was followed by a parade of the childrenfrom all grades, each carrying a sign namingspecic rights and obligations (derechos ydeberes) of all children.

The highlight of the daysfestivities was a skit performed bythe teachers, secretary and theschools director.

Since the introduction of the HandWashing Programat La Escuela losAlgarrobos, the students all wash theirhands before breakfast in the cafeteriaand after they use the restroom. Andyou know because of echoes of thesong wash, wash, wash your hands...wash with soap and watercan beheard across the campus all day long, indicating one more healthy practicethese young people have learned.

After a hearty meal and apiece of cake, each child waspresented with a basket ofcandy, creatively decorated bythe teachers.

While the food was beingprepared by the parents in theschool kitchen, the kids dancedto salsa rhythms and others triedto snatch the balloons decoratingthe room. Prizes were awarded forthe best dancers as well as to thewinners of all the games duringthe day.

For this special day of theyear, the kids were allowedto go to town on the sugar! Avery sweet day it was.

Once all 5 garbage buckets are in place at school, there will be anorientation program for the kids, reminding them to use the garbagebuckets and why it is important to put trash in its place.
