• Esperanza’s name means hope. To her, it means it’s too long, it’s sad, it’s waiting, it’s like the number 9 or the color of mud.

• It was her great-grandmother’s name. She was a wild horse woman who ended up marrying her great-grandfather and sitting by the window her whole life.

• Esperanza wants to be free, not sitting by the window.

• They are thankful for the times that they do have these things.

• Darius doesn’t like school. He is stupid but says something wise today.

snow. There are 10 names for clouds.• People can have multiple names.• Rachel and Lucy get mad at Esperanza

and begin to call her names and insult both her and her mother.

• Nenny can’t talk to Rachel & Lucy if she wants to be Esperanza’s sister.
