GEOGRAPHY.

La Carlota has a population of about 12000. Due to its history, the population is divided into 11 districts or municipalities : the town of La Carlota and ten departments.

It is mainly an agricultural area. The building sector which had developed greatly in the last few years has been paralised at the moment by the recession.

La Carlota was founded in 1767 due to the interest of the king Carlos III to colonize uninhabited areas of the Guadalquivir valley and Sierra Morena. Settlers from Central Europe –mainly Germany- were brought to this place. This is the reason why nowadays Central European surnames and features persist among its inhabitants.
