PLANStar pickets at maximum 2.5 m spacings
Construction Notes
1. Remove all vegetation and topsoil from under the dam wall and from within the storage area.
2. Construct a cut-off trench 500 mm deep and 1,200 mm wide along the centreline of the
embankment extending to a point on the gully wall level with the riser crest.
3. Maintain the trench free of water and recompact the materials with equipment as specified
in the SWMP to 95 per cent Standard Proctor Density.
4. Select fill following the SWMP that is free of roots, wood, rock, large stone or foreign material.
5. Prepare the site under the embankment by ripping to at least 100 mm to help bond compacted fill to the existing substrate.
6. Spread the fill in 100 mm to 150 mm layers and compact it at optimum moisture content
following the SWMP.
7. Construct the emergency spillway. 8. Rehabilitate the structure following the SWMP.
Construction Notes
1. Construct sediment fences as close as possible to being parallel to the contours of the site, but
with small returns as shown in the drawing to limit the catchment area of anyone section. The
catchment area should be small enough to limit flow if concentrated at one point to 50 I/s in the
design storm, usually the 10yr event. 2. Cut a 150-mm deep trench along the upslope line of the fence for the bottom of the fabric to be
entrenched.
3. Drive 15m long star pickets into ground at 25m intervals Imaxl at the downslope edge of the trench.
Ensure any star pickets are fitted with safety caps. 4. Fix self-supporting geotextile to the upslope side of the posts ensuring it goes to the base of the
trench. Fix the geotextile with wire ties or as recommended by the manufacturer. Only use
geotextile specifically produced for sedimeM fencing. The use of shade cloth for this purpose is not
satisfactory. 5. Join sections of fabric at a support post with a 150mm overlap. 6. Backfill the trench over fhe base of the fabric and compact it thoroughly over the geotextile.
EARTH BASIN - WET SO 6-4SEDIMENT FENCE SD 6-8
(APPLIES TO ’TYPE D’ AND TYPE F’ SOILS ONLY)
GENERAL NOTES - SOIL & WA TER MANAGEMENT
1. This plan is to be read in conjunction with other engineering
plans and any written instructions that may be issued.
2. The quorry operotor sholl implement 011 soil erosion ond sediment
control measures prior to disturbance of the related catchment
area and to the satisfc.ction of Council.
3. The location of "silt" fences, barrier fences, sediment traps, basins and other devices are indicative only and final locations
are to be decided on site. Variations will be permitted to best
suit the circumstances.
4. Cleored vegetotion must be disposed of by ,- il chipping or mulching for future landscaping and usage, or
iil transport to an approved landfill facility. S. Temporary crossbanks Ibunds constructed with earth, strc.w bales
or sandbagsl. shall be constructed during earthworks to limit
slope length, where possible, to eo metres. These shall be
constructed immediately prior to forecast rain c.nd during
temporory closure of the site. induding weekends. 6, Temporary rehabilitation should be undertaken on disturbed areas
where works have stopped and soils are expected to remain
exposed for two months. 7. The quarry operator will inspect Illl erosion and pollution control
works at least weekly and following every rainfc.1l event greater than Smm, providing particular attention to the following matters!
la) Ensure drains operote effectively ond initiate repoir as required. Ibl Remove spilled sand lor other materilllsJ from hazard c.reas,
including lands closer than S metres from likely areas of
concentroted or high velocity flows such as waterwoys. Icl Ensure rehc.bilitated lands have effectively reduced the erosion
hazard and initiate upgrading or repair as appropriate. IdJ Construct additional erosion and/or sediment control works as
might become necessary to ensure the desired protection is given to downslope lands and waterways, i.e., make ongoing changes to
the plan. lei Maintain erosion and sediment control measures in 0 functioning
condition until all earthwork octivities are completed ond the site
is rehabilitated.
If} Remove temporary soil conservation structures as a Ic.st activity in the rehabilitation program.
e. Utilise a single access only to the stock pile sites. 9. 00 not taint clean catchment water with silt from the works.
10. Rehabilitate the site as soon os possible ofter the completion of
quarrying c.ctivities and within 10 working days. Lllnds where
works are not to continue for more than 20 working days must
be rehabilitated. Such rehabilitation shall invoLve the spraying of
o straw- bitumen mulch to the disturbed londs or equivolent. 11. Access areas limited to Il maximum width of 10 Ipreferably SI
metres.
12. All positions shown are approximate and are best determined on site in conjunction with the superintendent.
13. Conformity with this plan shall in no way reduce the
responsibility of the quarry operator to protect against water
domage during the course quarrying activities. 14. Topsoil and spoil shall be stockpiled in non-hazard areas and
protected from surface run-off by diversion drains or similar.
Stockpiles sholl be surrounded on downstreom sides by silt
fencing. Stockpiles shall be suitably compacted to inhibit erosion.
Where the stockpiling period exceeds four 141 weeks, the
stockpile shall be seeded to encourage vegetation growth. 15. Topsoil sholl be re-spreod ond stobilised os soon os possible.
Disturbed areas shall be left with Q scarified surface to
encourage water infiltration and assist keying in topsoil. 16. The qUllrry operc.tor shall maintain grass cover until all works
have been completed. by frequent wotering and mowing where
required. 17. Site access shall be restricted to a nominated point. The
construdion of a shake-down area wiU be required at the entry to the site.
1e. Fa.cilities and/or equipment must be provided for the application of water to disturbed c.rec.s to minimise the genera~ion of airborne dust from any area disturbed by construction activities.
19. Material removed from sediment control structures must be
disposed of in a way that does not pollute waters or bushland.
20. Woste disposal containers must be provided on site for the collection and disposal of aIL industrial and domestic type wastes
generated on site.
21. Runoff from vehicle, construction plont or mobile plont maintenance and cleaning areas must be contained, collected c.nd
disposed of in a manner to prevent entry into any waters, including sediment retention ponds.
22. Fuelling of vehicles and construction plont must be carried out
with an operator or driver present, and in a way that prevents any spillage occurring,
