General Hot Melt Material ProcessingInstructions

NOTE: Before processing hot melt material, carefully read the materialmanufacturer’s Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) or material informationsheet. Nordson supplies only general processing instructions and is notliable for hazards associated with or damage caused by the use of hot meltmaterial.

StorageStore the material in dry areas at room temperature. Keep it in covered,dust-protected containers.

Preparations for Material Application/CoatingKeep the substrate at room temperature, dry, and free of dust and grease.Perform tests to determine the suitable hot melt material, optimum operatingconditions, and preliminary treatment of the substrate for the application.

Some substrates contain plasticizers and other ingredients which dissipateover time. In some cases, surfaces are treated with waxes, anti-stick oils, etc. Without adequate pretreatment, the hot melt bond in these applicationsmay be defective at the time of dispensing.

Processing TemperatureThe application temperature of the hot melt material at the nozzle is crucialfor effective bonds.

Refer to the material manufacturer’s MSDS or material information sheet.

Avoid unnecessary thermal stress. If the work is interrupted, reduce themelting temperature.

Avoid heating the hot melt material above the prescribed processing tem-perature. Higher temperatures may cause charring of the hot melt material. This results in downtime. In addition, material may generate dangerous va-pors at excessively high temperatures. Remove these vapors by using ap-propriate exhaust systems.

FunctioningThe following figure illustrates the basic method of operation of an adhesivegun within a complete system.

Adhesive is to be applied to a substrate (7). The transport belts (8) conveythe substrates. When the leading edge of a substrate reaches the photocell(10), the beam of light sent is reflected and the program is started. Thecontrol unit compiles all the data according to the speed of the productionmachine. The encoder (4) is mechanically connected to the transportequipment via a gear and supplies one pulse per mm. The control unitevaluates all the data and establishes the point at which the liquid adhesiveguns (5) must be activated.

The pump (12) is connected to the compressed air supply (1). It operatescontinuously and pumps the liquid adhesive from the adhesive reservoir (11) to the liquid adhesive guns (5).

A current between 0-20 mA is supplied from the control unit (3) to theproportional pressure control valve (2). The strength of the current isdependent on the speed of the production machine. The strength of thecurrent determines how far the proportional pressure control valve (2)should be opened and the regulator (9) opens accordingly. The adhesiveflows to the liquid adhesive guns (5) and is applied to the substrate. Thelength of the application is defined by the control unit program.

Setting the Adhesive Quantity, LA 820The adhesive pattern is influenced by the adhesive pressure andadhesive quantity. The adhesive pressure is determined by thepump control unit according to the application speed.

The adhesive gun is equipped with an adjustable pole face toadjust the adhesive quantity (4, Fig. 3-1). Turn the adjustablepole face counterclockwise using an Allen key to increase thequantity of adhesive. Reduce the quantity of adhesive by turningthe key clockwise.

Fig. 3-2The upper side of the adhesive gun (Fig. 3-1) is provided withreference points which indicate the setting of the adjustable poleface. Turning the adjustable pole face one graduation pointadjusts the needle stroke by 0.05 mm (0.00195”).

NOTE: The default needle stroke setting is 0.15 mm (0.0059”).To achieve this setting, turn the adjustable pole face to its bottomsetting and then 3 graduations back.

NOTE: Increasing the needle stroke reduces the maximumadhesive pressure. When operating at high speeds, the length ofthe adhesive bead is increased and, therefore, requires greatercompensation.

General Adhesive Processing InstructionsNOTE: The following information is particularly important for the processingof liquid adhesives but is also applicable to other materials:

Always pre-test the product before applying it for its ultimate purpose.

The surface to be bonded should be at room temperature and free ofdust, grease and moisture.

The suitability of material, optimum working conditions and anynecessary pre-treatment of the substrate must be determined by testing.

Some substrates contain softeners and other components which maybecome volatile later. Occasionally, surfaces are covered with wax, isolating oil, etc. The bonding may fail immediately or later ifpre-treatment/tests are not carried out.

NOTE: Observe any comment sheets concerning the process to thematerial used.

Compatibility of Different Types of AdhesivesNOTE: Not all types of liquid adhesive are compatible. The adhesive maybecome degraded if improperly used, resulting in functional faults and, possibly, equipment damage.

In our capacity as suppliers of adhesive guns, we assume no liability fordamage to equipment, hoses and guns caused by the hardening ofadhesive through improper handling.

In case of doubt and/or intended change of adhesive, please contact theadhesive supplier, us or one of our representatives.

Preventive Maintenance

Cleaning the Liquid Adhesive GunIt is not necessary to clean the adhesive gun if air is prevented fromentering into the hydraulic system and coming into contact with the glue. Ifthis occurs, however, the glue starts to solidify after approx. 30 minutes. Theprecise time varies according to the adhesive used. Blocked nozzle orificesor guns can be cleaned easily at any time.

NOTE: Do not disassemble an adhesive gun in which glue has solidified! Itis highly likely this would damage sensitive components.

We recommend immersing the adhesive gun in warm water for 1-2 days tosoften the glue. Repeat the process several times, if necessary. If theadhesive gun still cannot be disassembled, return it to us for repair.

Regular MaintenanceWe recommend flushing the liquid adhesive guns with water twice a year. The guns should always be kept clean, residual glue and dirt being removeddaily.

NOTE: *1 The linearity is dependent on the reology of the adhesive. The viscosity is measured according to theBrookfield method.

NOTE: *2 The time is heavily dependent on the adhesive and only serves as a guideline value. The minimum up-time isrelated to the bead length, the minimum down-time to the distance between two beads (the stitch).
