Have you got the time? People today are always thinking about the time. There never seems to be enough time to do all the things we want to do. Believe it or not, there was a time before time was so important. It was enough to know that the sun was out. That meant it was daytime. During these days when the clock seems to control us, doesn’t that sound kind of nice? Time can mean a lot of different things. That’s one way we know how important it is for us. We have so many words about it! The smallest amount of time we can measure is called a second. When you put 60 seconds together, you get one minute. If you take 60 minutes, you get one hour. The hands of the clock go all the way around twice in 24 hours, giving us one day. If you want to look at time beyond one day, you leave the clock and look at a calendar instead. There are about 30 days in one month. Some months have an extra day; February has a couple less. There are 12 months in one year. Time never stops.

that follow. How things move

We can watch things around us move. When something is in motion, it changes its position. Objects can move from one place to another. They can move in many directions. I f you roll a ball, it might move in a straight line. It might also move in a curve. A swing can move back and forth. A light switch can move up and down. Fans have blades that move in a circle. If you want to know if something is moving, you can compare it to other things around it that are not moving. I f the things behind the object are changing, the object is probably moving. If they are not changing, the object is probably not moving. You can measure the distance an object moves. Just measure the distance between where it was when it started to move and where it was when it stopped. Distance can be measured in inches, feet, yards or miles. Those measurements are in the customary system. It can also be measured in millimeters, centimeters, meters and kilometers. Those measurements are in the metric system.

What is gravity? You may have seen pictures of astronauts. They float around in space. They fly in a space shuttle. Have you ever wondered why they float? Your feet stay firmly on the ground. Why don’t theirs? When you drop something, why does it fall? The answer to these questions is something called gravity. It affects everything we do. Many years ago, a man named Sir Isaac Newton wondered about gravity, too. He watched and tested the way things move and fall on Earth. He wrote his ideas down. Scientists today use a lot of his ideas. Those ideas are now considered laws of science. Gravity is a force that makes all objects attracted to each other. The bigger the object is, the more it attracts things. Since nothing on Earth is bigger than planet Earth itself, all the things and people on Earth are attracted by Earth. Everything is pulled toward the center of the planet. That is why things fall to the ground. It is also why people and things stay on the ground instead of floating around in space. Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing.

You may think you are really good at using the English language. This may be so, but you still need to practice. To use any language well, you have to practice listening, speaking, reading and writing. Most students read and write in class. Those are both taught in school, so you practice reading and writing often. You might think you speak well. You may. Still, you may not always say things in a way that helps people understand what you mean. Think about what you will say before you speak out loud in class. When you talk in front of the class, use a nice, loud voice so that everyone in the class can hear you. Some people are better at listening than others. Everyone can use some practice. 3-D It is not just for Movies

You may have heard of 3-D movies. You may have even seen one. The D in 3-D stands for dimensional. A dimension is a direction that something can be measured. Flat things can be measured in two ways. They can be measured by length and by width. That’s why flat things are sometimes called 2-D or two-dimensional. Three- dimensional things can be measured in three ways. They can be measured by length and width like flat things. They can also be measured by their height. Height is what lets them come up off the paper or the screen.

Three-dimensional shapes in math are called solids. Let’s look at some of the most common solids. A cube has six square sides. The sides are called faces. A rectangular prism has six sides that are all shaped like rectangles. A sphere is shaped like Earth. It is also like a playground ball. A square pyramid has a square on the bottom, and four triangle-shaped sides.

The scientific method The scientific method is the way that scientists organize and track their studies. As they learn and experiment, they use the scientific method. They ask questions and try to find out the answers. You can use this method, too. Start with a question about something that interests you. See what you observe about your topic in the real world. Read about your topic as much as you can. Organize your observations and take notes. After you have made a lot of observations, it is time to set up an experiment. Make a smart guess, or prediction, about what you think will happen. Use all the information you have and your common sense. Scientists call this guess a hypothesis. Experiments should be done more than once. Repeating them will let you know what the usual result will be. It is important to take good notes so you know the result of each experiment. By the time you finish, you will either prove that your guess was right, or you will prove that your guess was wrong. Either result is okay. Using a timeline

A timeline is a tool that we can use to help us understand history. It can tell us what happened at different times. It can tell us how much time there was between two events. It can give us a picture of dates in our minds. That helps us see how they all fit together. Timelines aren’t only for old events. People still use them today. They help us keep track of important dates in our lives. You can even make a timeline for yourself. A timeline looks a lot like a number line when you begin. Draw a straight line across the page. Make little marks for the important events in your life. Your timeline might begin with your birth. Include things like the first time you walked, and when you started school. Summarize it You have probably written a summary after the completion of a book you have read. You may have told about the characters. You may have told about the setting. You probably told about how a problem was solved. But did you know that summarizing is not just for stories? You can use your summarizing skills to be better prepared in all your subjects. Some students have a hard time with science and social studies because there are lots of new words. There is also a lot of information to remember. Research shows that just writing things down will help you remember them. It works even if you never read what you wrote again. Wow! That’s a great reason for taking notes.

Did you know that taking notes is summarizing? When you read your science and social studies textbooks, keep a notebook with lined paper close to you. Most textbooks are divided into sections that have headings. Headings are like titles in darker letters. Write down the heading of each section before you read the section. As you read, jot down the big ideas. Look for new words. You can also use your summary to study!
