Woolton in Bloom want to bring something new each year. We had the crown for the Queen’sJubilee and we have ‘Tommy’ to commemorate World War 1.Following the death of Sir David James Reynolds in February we now have the 4th Baronet ofWoolton, Sir James Francis Reynolds the great grandson of Col Sir James Reynolds DSO whogave the fields bordering High Street in Woolton Woods to the people of Woolton. We would like to commemorate his bequeath and celebrate the 4th Baronet in a floral featureincorporating the family crest. Many of you will know that Col Sir James DSO fought in World War 1 alongside many fromWoolton. Do you know of any descendants of the brave soldiers who served with him? If so wewould like you to get in touch please.I want to assure you all that the village will bloom magnificently again this summer even thoughwe are not in competition. Our volunteers work tirelessly to brighten everywhere up for you thepeople of Woolton not for judges who simply visit for a day. Thanks again for your support so far and long may it continue.

Please support us. - Enjoy your village!Kerry Peacock Horticulture Manager Woolton in Bloom

Message from…Erica Kemp, Lord Mayor of LiverpoolI will always think of myself as a “Woolton Girl” despite the fact that I’ve notlived in Woolton for many years now. When I was six years old my father died and my Mum came to Liverpool to livenear her sister. Mum bought a house in Hillside Drive and then moved to HuntsCross Avenue, off Hollytree Road, where we lived until I got married. I went to Woolton Hall school before it became St. Julie’s and used to walk toschool each day so would often stop off in the village on my way home.I have very fond memories of the village. I learned to swim in Woolton Bathsand used the library on a weekly basis. Does anyone remember the small recordshop in the village? I remember buying “Puppet on a String” there which wasthe first record I ever bought.I know the village has changed a lot and in many ways for the better but I’msure like me you like to recall the village from years ago. It’s great that the cinema is still there and perhaps when I’m no longer Lord MayorI will treat myself to a night out recalling the old times as I go to the cinema andthen have a nice meal out and approve some of the changes!

GATEACRE SCHOOL NEWSGateacre School Hedgefield Road, Liverpool L25 2RWLisa Mitchell Specialist School’s Community Co-ordinatorE-Mail: [email protected]: 0151 235 1400

Gateacre School has partnered onceagain with Belle Vale ShoppingCentre host a unique attraction; The BIG Little Library! This pop-uplibrary was officially unveiled onWorld Book Day, Thursday 5thMarch by Cllr Erica Kemp at anevent attended by local dignitaries, community members, schoolchildrenand the public of Belle Vale.

The school was approached by BelleVale Shopping Centre, due to theongoing community work we dowith them, and generously offereda shop unit to use for three months.

The Big Little Library is a gatheringplace for book lovers, where thecommunity can share their favourite

literature as well as take part inenjoyable games to build readingand writing skills. The aim is to inspirechildren and young people to read, share and even write their ownfantastic stories.

Gateacre School was made aware ofthe Little Libraries by a friend of theschool who had installed a LittleLibrary in their driveway (MiddlefieldLittle Library). The library was thenspotted by the Lord Mayor of Liverpoolwho asked if they could have one forthe Town Hall.

Middlefield Little Library approachedthe school and asked if our studentswould be happy to make a Little Libraryfor the Town Hall and we agreed.

Belle Vale Library, as well as manyother libraries across Liverpool, recently faced the prospect of closureand so as part of this campaign; LittleLibraries will be donated throughoutthe city. The first of these Little Librarieswas presented to the Lord Mayor CllrErica Kemp at the opening event, whoaccepted it on behalf of Liverpool TownHall. At the end of the project a LittleLibrary will also remain at Belle ValeShopping Centre as a permanentfeature.

This is the first occasion that a fullshop unit has been taken over bysuch a project, making it an excitinggathering place for book lovers!

The BIG Little Library by Gateacre School

Page 21: L25 woolton times march april 15

In its most basic form, a Little Library is a box full of books where anyone may stop by and pick up a book (or two)and bring back another book to share. We are taking it one step further by creating an actual shop full of books, which have been donated by local residents, businesses, students and the wider community over the last 9 months.

The purpose of the shop is:

To become an inspiring gathering place where the community can share their favourite literature and stories.

To help to engage all members of the local communities;from children, young people and adults from differentbackgrounds.

To encourage people to enjoy reading and discover how itbenefits their wellbeing.

To develop a broader range of English and Literacy skills.

To build strong, mutually supportive communities whoread together.

To provide enjoyable, welcoming and meaningfulactivities within the community, inspiring people toengage in other local and city-wide activities.

To improve wellbeing, increase social engagement andwiden cultural horizons.

The Shop will open for 3 months. Along with manyliteracy and creative activities taking place in the shopitself with our local primary schools we will be opento the public to take and donate books

The South Liverpool Arts GroupReg. Charity No: 509004

The South Liverpool Arts Group is currently exhibiting aselection of their work in:Oakley Independent Financial Advisers74 Allerton Road Woolton Village L25 7RG.

The work comprises a variety of subjects such as landscapes, seascapes etc. in various mediums such as acrylics, watercolour, oils etc. All the pictures are original works and arefor sale. Any one of them would be worth hanging on a wall in somebody’s home. The exhibition is certainly worth a look! The Groups History…In1977 the Garston Carnival, which used to be a popular annual event in and around Garston, had as one of its

features a Carnival Art Exhibition. A group of local artists who had been responsible for the exhibition were so

impressed with work being displayed, and the enthusiasm expressed, that they decided to hold an open meeting

with a view to forming an art group. This meeting was pivotal in gathering together kindred spirits and exposed

a need for such a group.

The South Liverpool Arts Group was thus

formed in the autumn of 1977.

Now over 35 years we are still going strong

with membership approaching 50, made up

of mainly adults. We are all amateur artists,

mostly painters, and most of us live in the

south Liverpool area.

The Group holds exhibitions at the Reader Gallery in

Calderstones Park once or twice a year, with other

locations where possible. We also have an annual

exhibition in the Anglican Cathedral.

We welcome anyone who would like to join the

group. Meetings are held at Chaloner Hall,

St Austin’s Church, 561 Aigburth Road.

The room is available for members’ use every Tuesday

from 7.30pm to approx. 10.00pm, where we have a

full programme covering talks and demonstrations by guest speakers; hold portrait sessions, life classes and material

workshops; talk about art, sort out each other’s technical problems; paint in the field, either individually or as a

group, or do it yourself evenings. (Not necessarily in that order and not at the same time) All these activities take

place in an extremely congenial atmosphere - to which we attribute the Group’s continuing success.

THE WOOLTON SOCIETY CARES FOR WOOLTON

The Woolton Society continues to campaign on environmentalissues, & keeps all members up to date with planning matters. With the continuing controversy concerning St Julie’s school, the council has revised the plans slightly (elevations, landscapedetails, revised Tree Survey and revised Ecological AssessmentReport). Unfortunately the proposal is still to Buildthe Schoolpartly on Woolton Woods’s public space. It must be noted thatthe Woolton Society does not object to the rebuilding of the school, only to the use of public green space for building purposes. The application number remains at 15F/006 although the datethat comments could be submitted was extended until 23March 2015 which gavea further chance for people to raiseobjections. Several members have contacted the WooltonSociety to report that when they submitted objections onthe council’s own website it crashed or failed to take theirsubmissions. It is suggested that objections are put intosomething like Word and then copied into the council’s plan-ning explorer so at least there is a saved copy. Alternatively, email objections to:[email protected]…and ask for a receipt. The Woolton Society was well represented at a ceremony atWoolton Woods on Sunday 8th February, when members of theReynolds family gathered to unveil a plaque in memory of SirJames Reynolds. Sir James had covenanted many acres of greenspace to be used by local people in perpetuity. It is thiscovenant which the council proposes to break, in order to build

on public green space. As regards the protected yew trees at St James church, illegallydestroyed in December, the church has put in a planningapplication to replace them (15T/0112). The Woolton Societyhas objected to these plans on the basis that the proposedreplacements would be only 1.5 to 1.75 metres in height.Following constructive discussions between St James’s Churchand the Woolton Society, the church has agreed to tworeplacements that will be between 3.6 and 4 metres inheight. The Woolton Society feels that this is a much moreappropriate size replacement and we hope that with the correctprofessional care and nurturing in their early years thesereplacement trees will prosper, and provide the same benefit tothe community and wildlife as did the original yews. The Woolton Society began its spring programme on March18th with a very well received talk by Christina Spencer on thehistory of the Bibby shipping line. The next talk will be on May20th when Peter Lloyd will be speaking on the care andconservation of Woolton’s stone buildings. All talks are heldin the Village Club, starting at 7.30pm. Talks are free toattend, and open to non members. All members are kept up to date with a regular newsletter, handdelivered or sent by post or e-mail. The Society websitewww.wooltonsociety.org.uk can be consulted for news andviews, and back numbers of the newsletter.Jean Davies, Woolton Society chairmanChris Darnton, Environment secretary

The fight goes on to persuade the council that St Julie’s school can be rebuilt on theexisting site without encroaching on Woolton Woods. Members of Save WooltonWoods, along with other greenspace groups have lobbied council meetings in an at-tempt to get the message across that our green space is disappearing and needs tobe preserved. In Woolton and Gateacre alone, in addition to the school, there areplans to build houses on the site of the old Watergate School, Gateacre School (doublethe amount of houses originally planned), and apartments in Church Road South, toname but a few.The planning application has now been submitted so now is the time to step up thecampaign to ensure that St Julie’s builds state of the art facilities on the existing site.

Please also come along to the Green and Open Space Review meeting to be held inSt James Church Hall on Saturday 28 March from 10.30 to midday when you canhave your say on this and the future of other green spaces.

As you may know the local and general election will be taking place on 7th May this year.In Woolton and Gateacre your local election candidate for the Labour party is Alice Bennett.Alice is a Woolton village resident and a keen campaigner, who has knocked on thousands ofdoors and spoken with hundreds and hundreds of local voters. Amongst the many concernsvoiced on the doorstep one is very noticeable, people are unhappy with the unfair and targetedapproach the Lib Dem Tory government is taking with Liverpool.

The coalition government in Westminster has unfairly targeted ourcity with savage cuts. We have lost over £300 million, this amountsto almost 60% of our funding budget. This onslaught has seriouslyaffected how the City Council provides services, services that manyin our community rely upon. The coalition is treating our city unfairly and the Lib Dems havewilfully supported this approach as more affluent areas in the southof the country have seen miniscule funding cuts in comparison. Our calls to the coalition for a fairer approach have been ignoredand the Lib Dems in Liverpool have had little influence over thistargeted, unjust attack. The Labour administration here in Liverpool is doing all it can todeal with these severe cuts passed to us and, perhaps most

importantly deal with them in the fairest possible manner. We will continue calling for a fairerdeal for Liverpool and with another Labour Councillor for Woolton and Gateacre this call willbe even stronger. We ask that you vote Labour on the 7th May and support Alice. If we can help you in any way or you’d like to raise any issues you may have don’t hesitate tocontact us on the phone numbers below.

Yours sincerely,

WOW!(Women of Woolton)

2014 A Year of Creativity, Education and FriendshipWhen a few interested womenstarted Woolton WI two years ago, Idon't think any of us knew whetherwe would succeed, but by the end ofthat first year, we could confidentlysay we had an organisation with asuccessful and vibrant membershipthat could rival any existing branchof the WI. Now at the end of the second yearof the life span of this organisation,I think we can look at how far wehave come and be very satisfiedthat that initial spirit and momen-tum has continued to blossomthanks to the engagement andcommitment of our members. Membership provides us with agreat opportunity to develop ourskills and discover things we didn'tknow we could do. For example, most of our budding golfers andbowlers had never played before.

We also have successful groups forWalking, Tai Chi and Art. Somethingfor everyone and a good reflectionof the breadth of interests in ourmembership. Our fabulous successat the Lancashire regional quiz wastestimony not only to the intellectualsuperiority of scousers, but to thecommitment of our glorious quizteam! Our Birthday meeting was excellent, with fabulous food, music & dancing! We have enjoyed interesting speakersand demonstrations and can lookforward to more to come. TheSummer Trip to Llandudno offered acomplex itinerary and was made agreat success only by the efforts ofour Events Organiser, Pauline.Christmas night at Woolton GolfClub was not to be missed. We ate, drank and made merry (somemore than others) and finished the

night with a festive bop round thehandbag! We have now decided increase ouroverall membership to 150,becoming probably one of thebiggest branches in the country. The WI provides us all, in differentways, the opportunity to participatein wonderful activities within abrilliant organisation, and succeedsthanks to the talent and creativity ofour members. But, more importantthan all the activities and experiences,is the way this organisation enableslike minded people to meet togetherand enjoy each other's company. THE NEXT COMMITTEE MEETING WILL BE HELD ON TUESDAY 14th APRIL 2015 AT 7.30PM IN THE MAINHALL THE QUARRY CLUB (FORMER BRITISH LEGION), ALLERTON ROAD, WOOLTON VILLAGE.RESIDENTS WISHING TO RAISE ISSUES ARE VERY WELCOME.

(1)POTENTIAL PUBLIC RIGHT OF WAY IN WOOLTON WOOD AT HIGH STREET

During research into the land for St Julies planning application, one of our members discovered a potential unregistered publicright of way footpath running parallel to the St Julies northern sandstone wall, which was not shown on the Council definitive mapfor such footpath highway routes. Members have held a site meeting with a PROW consultant engaged by the Association to assess the detail, and a firm decisionwas reached to make application for the route to be added to the council definitive map. As a precaution, the council has alreadybeen notified of that probability.Should the Association application be successful this may prevent the current planning application proceeding in its current formwith the 5% of protected green space being built on, or until an alternative footpath route is agreed – in case of objections, matterswould normally go to a public inquiry. We already have a number of witnesses willing to sign statements they use a short cut through Woolton Wood from Woolton Streetgate along the desire line path by the sandstone wall to the top of Coronation Drive / High Street and vice versa (say going toTesco, the Derby Arms, Vale Road area and back). If you are not already involved in this project and want to help with evidence ofuse, please contact Jane Eustance (Secretary) at the above address. If you wish to make a donation to our administration and legal costs please use the PAYPAL link below, go to ourwebsite www.wvra.co.uk or contact our Secretaryhttps://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=KT47SK48XGY5E. To date we have raised £4520 towards the costs of mounting challenges to this and other potential developments on ourirreplaceable protected Green Space. The more funding raised, the better the chances of success.
