• The Demographic Transition Model • The Demographic Transition Model (DTM) is a

model used to explain the transformation of countries from high birth rates and high death rates to low birth rates and low death rates as part of the economic development of a country from a pre-industrial to a highly industrialised country.

• It is based on the American demographer Warren Thompson’s prior observed changes, or transitions, in birth and death rates in developed economies over the past 200 years.

• It shows;– 1. Change over space – different countries are at

different places on the DTM – 2. Change over time – a country should progress
