COMMINUTIONComminution is the process of reducinga product to a smaller size. Conventionalmethods of comminution employ sometype of grinding, smashing, or tearingaction which can produce excessive heatand degrade the quality of the finishedproduct. This can also generate a higherpercentage of particles which fall outsidethe target range of the desired particlesize and negatively impact the yield,quality, and final particle size.
CONTROLLEDCOMMINUTIONThe word “Comitrol” means controlledcomminution. The Comitrol Processoruses the principle of incremental shear toensure highly efficient comminution byrotating the product inside a stationaryreduction head at high rotational speeds.In addition, continuous single passoperation achieves consistently uniformparticle size reduction at high capacities.The result is the most efficient type ofcomminution available today. HOW THECOMITROLPROCESSORWORKS
� Product to be reduced in size enters thestationary reduction head and is rotated bythe impeller. The resulting centrifugal forcemoves the product outward and against theinner periphery of the cutting edges. Theimpeller pushes the product against thecutting edges of the reduction head reducingit into precise increments.
� Size reduction is accomplished by cuttingthe product with no metal to metal contact.The absence of random particle movementensures highly efficient comminution in asingle pass operation.
� Three types of reduction heads–thecutting head, the microcut head, and theslicing head–utilize the same operatingprinciple but provide different types of cuts.
Feed Assemblies� The selection of a suitable feed assemblyis critical to the efficient operation of theComitrol Processor. Urschel Laboratoriesmanufactures an array of feed assemblies toaccommodate your production requirements.
Cutting Head1. Inside the cutting head, the impeller forcesthe product against uniformly spaced, thinhorizontal separators.2. Small portions of product projecting into thespaces between the separators are cut off intoparticles by spaced columns of vertical knives.3. These particles fly outward and away from
the cutting head. The wall surfaces betweenthe vertical knives are relieved to eliminate
rubbing friction that would produce heat.
Microcut Head1. Product is fed to the high speed rotatingimpeller, and strikes the exposed cutting edgesof the microcut blades with great velocity.2. This action results in the removal of smallparticles until reduction is completed.3. Particles are discharged through thespaces between the blades. Because of highimpeller speeds, product remains in the micro-cut head only a fraction of a second. The
product is reduced in precise increments,emerging a uniform size.

A variety of impellers are designed specifically to meet the uniquerequirements of your application and can be retipped for extended use.
Cutting heads and impellers are easily changed tofacilitate other applications, cleaning, ormaintenance.
As shown in the above illustrations,particles of uniform size can beachieved with any of the hundreds ofavailable cutting heads.
The Comitrol Processor uses the principle ofincremental shear to ensure highly efficientcomminution by rotating the product inside thecutting head at high rotational speeds.
� The Cutting Head is comprised of uniformly spaced,vertical knife columns arranged in a circular fashion and heldin place by thin horizontal separators. The leading edge ofeach vertical knife is a sharp knife edge.Cutting heads are constructed ofspecial wear and abrasion resistantalloys and can usually beresharpened for extended use.
� The distancebetween thehorizontalseparators and thevertical knifecolumns definesthe openingthrough which theproduct must passand helpsdetermine thefinal particlesize andshape.

� The Slicing Head is a precise,miniaturized version of other Urschelcentrifugal slicers. It consists of aring of eleven stationary slicingknives held in place by adjustableknife holders. Centrifugal forcecreated by the rotating impellercauses the product to press firmlyagainst the inner surface of the knifeholders to produce uniform slices ateach knifelocation.Designed forapplicationswhere thefinaldimension isa specific slicethickness from.020 to .060"(.5 to 1.5 mm).

� TheMicrocut Head is a 6" (152.4 mm)diameter ring of closely spaced blades. Whenproduct is revolved inside this ring of blades atvery high speed, centrifugal force causespressure against the blades equal to severalthousand times the weight of the product.
� The leading edge of eachblade is a sharp shearedge, and the bladesare carefully positionedso that heat producingfriction is minimized.
� Depending on yourapplication, a factoryassisted program isavailable that doubles the use ofeach blade. Motor power is effectively utilizedto cleanly cut the product into uniform particlesinstead of producing destructive heat.

The ¥patented Comitrol Processor Model 9300is recommended for particle size reduction whenthe final product will be a slurry, paste, or liquid.Equipped with a 12" (305 mm) microcut headand impeller, the 9300 is designed for one-passsize reduction of products such as fruits andmeats for the production of baby food andpeanuts for peanut butter.OPERATING PRINCIPLE
Product is guided to the center of a high speed,rotating impeller. Initial particle size reductionbegins as the inner ends of the impeller paddlesstrike the product, breaking it into small piecesand causing it to rotate. Size reduction continuesas centrifugal force moves product outward tothe impeller tips, which carry the product past thecutting edges of the stationary microcut head.The product is reduced in precise increments,emerging a pre-determined size.TYPES OF CUTS
Size of cut is determined by the number, spacing,and angle of blades in the microcut head. A widerange of microcut heads enable the Model 9300to produce a variety of particle sizes. Otherfactors such as hardness of the product will affectsize of cut.
