Since the invention of cinema, a little over a century ago, the visual technologies and entertain-ment industries have undergone innumerable changes and developments. The latest such deve-

lopment from the public’s viewpoint is undoubtedly the arrival of 3D imagery on the big screen, and now the small screen as well. With cinematic innovations such as this, which appear to

hold particularly fascinating prospects in store for the coming years, it is easy to forget the speed at which other media have developed, in just a few decades. Since the release of Pong, in 1972, video games, animation, multimedia and the internet have not only utterly

transformed the world of visual technologies and entertainment, but have also had a las-ting influence on our cultures.

But these developments are still in their infancy. Close ties are increasingly being established between different sectors in terms of creation and distribution, with a view to producing ever larger and more comprehensive transmedia projects. On the initiative of visionary artists and businesses, projects are now under way

that involve different media, either in parallel or on a complementary basis, and which offer new experiences to the public. Whether content adapted and produced

for multiple media, alternate reality games or total fiction projects, the future lies in a transversal approach to media and visual technologies, connected to

produce a narrative, a universe or a story – all creating ever more fascinating experiences.

These exciting future prospects are the basis for the approach that Greater Lyon is seeking to develop across the metropolitan area. The importance

and renown of the companies based in Lyon, together with the quality and complementary nature of their skills, encouraged us to give this

movement its full support. This desire has become a reality, in the form of the Imaginove competitiveness cluster, the creation of internatio-

nal events dedicated to the different parts of the visual technologies sector, and support for businesses. In the coming years, this com-

mitment is sure to find even more ways to express itself, and to reach out to all those who wish to join us in a metropolis creating

the image of tomorrow.

As the birthplace of cinema, via the Lumière brothers, Lyon has, for over a century, been the city of images, both moving and still. The Lyon urban area – a pioneer in the video games and multimedia sectors, and at the cutting edge of graphic arts and web technologies – continues to reinvent the cinema of today and tomorrow.

here, visual technologies firms develop within the context of a wider industry presence across the whole Rhône-Alpes region, which is home to some 650 companies, including several European and world leaders, 23 research laboratories, 28 training programmes and numerous international events. Furthermore, with 40% of the French digital entertainment industry, Greater Lyon has one of the country’s highest concentrations of businesses and jobs in this sector, after the Île-de-France (Paris) region.

creative industries and make Greater Lyon one of the leading European centres for innovation and creation.

GREATER LyON the transmedia lab

The density and diversity of active players in the conurbation means that transmedia development projects are taking on a whole new dimension in the area. The challenge for Greater Lyon is to increase the number of links between companies working on various approaches to image technology in order to foster collaboration on joint projects.

TANUKIStransmedia design studio

How would you describe your approach?Tanukis has been steadily growing for almost ten years now. Our approach today is to develop innovative projects which combine all media at screenplay level. A story might begin, for example, in a video game, before moving to TV and then into a book. This is how we tell stories and draw our audience into our world.

What stage have you reached now and what are your future plans? we have redefined our various clusters (animation, publishing, interactive, buzz) and are currently working on several in-house productions: firstly, the sequel to Lovely Juliet, our interactive romantic comedy web series which will soon be available online. This game will allow our loyal gaming community to catch up with their heroine, Juliet, approximately three years after the first season. we are also planning to release our social networking game, Neighbors, on Facebook soon, in which you can hang out with your Facebook friends and have lots of adventures. In terms of client projects, we have just completed an innovative serious game combining video and interactive features, which will be launched in late September.

Damien BRIATTEManaging Director

Tanukis – transmedia creations

Tanukis design studio was created in 2003. we now divide our operations between Villeurbanne (where we have our interactive cluster: website design, online gaming, serious games) and Valence (where our animation cluster is based).

Why did you decide to set up in the Greater Lyon area?Greater Lyon offers an ideal growth environment for a company like ours. Media innovation is key to Greater Lyon. Major companies in this sector started out here, but they have left scope for smaller businesses by offering them the resources they need. This dynamic has now been jump-started and boosted by the Imaginove competitiveness cluster. Furthermore, the area is ideally located between the sea and the mountains, and especially between Paris and the rest of the world on account of its international airport, but it retains an exceptional quality of life.

CINEMA & AuDIOVISuALthe city that gave the world the Lumière brothers is still under the spotlight!

In Greater Lyon, our love of film and cinematic culture doesn’t end with the Lumière brothers. with the Rhône-Alpes Studios and the PIXEL technology cluster, Lyon boasts major support and production facilities, catering to every aspect of audiovisual creation.

And this love for film extends beyond Greater Lyon into the whole Rhône-Alpes region:

28 film festivals, € 5,000,000 of funding per year from Rhône-Alpes Regional Council,

700 days of filming in 2010, supported by the Rhône-Alpes Film Commission,

300 cinema screens, 18 million cinema-goers.

ANIMATIONa boom sector

As the birthplace of cinema, it is only natural that Lyon should become known as the city of the moving image, home as it is to a number of animation studios. The cross-media approach adopted across Greater Lyon, particularly in connection with the Cartoon Movie forum, has highlighted the links between animation professionals and video games professionals, who are increasingly working together to produce breathtaking results.

2

From animation to cinema, 2D to 3D, games to multimedia, all aspects of the visual technologies sector are represented in Greater Lyon. Emerging businesses and proven leaders alike have chosen Lyon as the place to develop their future image-related activities.

VIDEO GAMESHome to the crème de la crème of publishers and studios

The conurbation has one of the highest concentrations of companies and jobs in this sector in France. world-famous software houses such as Namco Bandai and Electronic Arts have all chosen Lyon, together with renowned development studios like Eden Games, Arkane Studios and Étranges Libellules.

MuLTIMEDIA AND DIGITAL INDuSTRIES the heavyweight and its imitators

with more than 30.000 jobs in 2.000 companies, the Lyon region is one of the world’s major clusters of the digital industries, and is a key player in the European information society. In addition to software houses, web agencies and developers, many companies work in sectors as diverse as interactive media, serious games, virtual reality and robotics.

COMICS2D takes off!

Comics are booming in Lyon, thanks to the convergence of several phenomena: comic book creators are setting up in – or returning to – Lyon; a new generation of comics book artists has emerged centred around a number of talented workshops, often based at specialised art schools in Lyon (such as Émile Cohl and ESIA 3D); the city has an extensive range of bookshops specialised in comic books; and the Lyon Comics Festival, in June, now in its sixth year, is going from strength to strength.

The Lyon-Vaise Digital Cluster is a 20-hectare site devoted to companies specialised in information and communication technologies and digital entertainment. Cegid, Electronic Arts, Namco Bandai, and Eden Games are just some of the firms that have already chosen Lyon–Vaise. A 757 m2 incubator is planned in the new “Rives Numériques” building, which will be marketed in 2012 by the developer Icade. It will offer quality real estate based on the “plug and play” concept.

Studio 24 was set up in 2002 by Rhône-Alpes Cinéma in partnership with the Rhône-Alpes Region Council and Villeurbanne City. Since its creation, movies, commercials and television series have been filmed there, and it has also been the site of live performances, including events during the last Lyon Dance Biennial. In 2009, two new studios (Lumière 1 – 860 m²; and Lumière 2 – 380 m²) were added to the Studio 24 site, which in the course of film shoots has been graced by talent such as Sophie Marceau, Emmanuelle Béart, Ludivine Sagnier, Daniel Auteuil, Benoît Magimel and Charles Berling, to name but a few.

TRAINING to develop essential skills

The visual technologies industry is constantly changing. It is therefore vital to continually develop the latest skills and provide suitable vocational training in order to support businesses’ projects and ensure the region stays one step ahead of the competition. It is this desire that led to the creation of Imaginove Compétences, Magali ROFIDAL

which aims to make access to continuous professional training easier and to help companies develop and obtain the skills they need.

For rhône-Alpes regional council, providing training for future talent in the visual technologies sector is a key priority. Through widely recognised specialist teaching of the highest standard, it offers a unique breeding ground for talent, enabling companies in the area to recruit the qualified personnel essential to their development. And, given the runaway growth of this sector, it is only natural that local authorities should help create new training programmes to provide future talent with the skills they need.

As France’s second city and capital of the dynamic Rhône-Alpes region, Lyon combines a strong economy with a high quality of life.

Located at the heart of the European high-speed rail network, Lyon is just 1 hr 55 min from Paris (with trains every 30 minutes at peak times).

The city’s international airport links Lyon with over 100 national and international destinations, and now boasts a highly developed low-cost hub.

Lyon was voted third best city in France by Le Point magazine in 2008 for its quality of life, cultural activities, leisure opportunities, uNESCO world heritage Site, and its status as a European capital of gastronomy.

The city is located in one of the most visited regions in France: just an hour from the 190 ski pistes of the Alps, 30 minutes from the hills and vineyards of the Beaujolais, and two hours from the beaches of the Mediterranean.

Finally, Lyon plays host to major cultural events: the Festival of Light, Nuit Sonores, Biennales de Lyon, Lumière Film Festival, Nuits de Fourvière cultural festival, and many more besides!
