There’s an old preacher story
that makes its circulation from
time to time about a young
man who shows up and says, “I
am a leader.” A seasoned pas-
tor says to the young man,
“Show me your followers and
you won’t have to tell me you
are a leader.” Leaders lead.
But how do they lead? They
lead by being a servant.
The word leader appears only a
handful of times in the New
Testament, but over and over
(100+) the word servant ap-
pears. A servant heart is the
heart of a leader. They know it
isn’t about recognition or
status or power. Servant lead-
ers know it is about a whole-
hearted devotion to Jesus and
his call upon their life. Serving
isn’t always easy, but it is in-
credibly rewarding. When you
don’t care who gets the credit,
it is easy for God to be glori-
fied.
Recently someone did some-
thing very nice for me by way
of a card and it was anony-
mous. Unfortunately, in many
church settings when you get
something anonymous it’s gen-
erally criticism, “they said that”
or “some people think this”—
but in this instance, the card
was very uplifting. And the
great thing about it was the
blessing of thinking just how
many people could have sent
that card. And that isn’t about
me, but the many, many peo-
ple I am surrounded by who
are servant-hearted. Their love
for God is contagious! People see
joy in you and they want it too!
I love that in many ways our con-
gregation is committed to living a
servant life. God church. We love
to live for Jesus. We love to help
people in God’s name. It begins
each weekend when we worship
together and connect with God.
And when we allow God to fill us
through worship and praise, then
we have the strength and the
courage to serve. I love to think
of worship as a time we sit at the
feet of Jesus “serving” through
aligning our heart with his. Then,
through the week as we live—”we
move and have our be-
ing” (servanthood) in him (Acts
17:28).
In the next few weeks we will be
serving our community as we
share our Easter services at the
Mathewson Center. Some of us
may ask “why?” we do this year
after year. Well, there are many
reasons: Our whole church family
gets to worship together. We
don’t have enough room to hold
services at our campuses. But
mostly, it is to meet the commu-
nity in a place where people
Leading People to aN active faith in Jesus christ
“L“LEADINGEADING ISIS S SERVINGERVING””
can come together and hear the good
news: Jesus is ALIVE!! We are trying to
reach people who don’t go to church
anywhere and let them know that God
cares about them. Over the years we’ve
seen people make a first step in their
relationship with God by asking Jesus
into their heart. We’ve seen marriages
restored and people who were in bond-
age to addictions be set free! To me,
that makes it all worthwhile. If even
one life is touched, it is worth taking a
servant role to love the people of our
community and get outside our walls on
Easter. There will be a wide variety of
music, including hymns, a message of
hope and life, and a prayer-time at the
end. Please don’t miss out! It is our gift
to the community and to the Lord,
whom we love.
See you at the Mathewson, April 24-
Resurrection Day! Jimd.
Invite a friend to attend with you!
Jesus caused a lot of upheaval with his message of love and grace. He went against the social, political and religious norm of his day. “UP” is a series about his life-changing message and his relevance for our day.
