Fishing for Pickerel?
Head’s up!
The Quebec ministry of Forests, Wildlife andParks (Ministère des Forêts, de la Faune et desParcs or MFFP), has just released the results ofthe mid-term review of the 2011-2016 WalleyeManagement Plan in Quebec.
Which fish are we talking about?
Local name: PickerelOfficial name (English): Walleye (Sander vitreus)Official name (French): Doré jaune
What is the Walleye Management Plan?
This is a plan created by the MFFP to placerestrictions on pickerel fishing in Quebec, in orderto maintain a healthy population. It is backed byscience and careful monitoring of fish populations.
What are the results of the review?
The current regulations are not enough to keep ahealthy population going. Therefore the MFFPproposes that the new catch size restrictions forpickerel should be 37-53 cm, increasing protectionfor smaller fish. This gives them a better chance tomake it to adulthood and reproduce successfully.
What does this mean for me?
Members of Kitigan Zibi and other First Nationcommunities who fish on traditional territory are notbound by ministry regulations. Legally, there isnothing that says that community members mustfollow ministry rules, but they can if they want to!
Why would I want to follow ministry rules?
The size regulations in the Walleye Management Planare there to protect the fish. Making sure that fishpopulations stay at a healthy size helps ensure thatthey will still be there in the future.
It is important to take care of local fish populations,so that our children and grandchildren will be able tocontinue fishing the same way we do today.
Help us make a difference!
Give the little guys (and the old guys) a chance
Only keep pickerel that are 37 - 53 cm in size
Help keep the population healthy
Don’t fish for pickerel on spawning grounds orduring the breeding season (April 1st - May 15)

Free Bat HousesThanks to everyone who came out to our bat house decorating workshops!
We’re finished that part of our project, but we still have 20 bat houses available.
Call or email to reserve your bat house, first come first serve. We’ll come install it for you—for free!
If you still want to decorate a house before we install it,let us know and we’ll make arrangements.
Bats are in Danger!Bats are declining nearly everywhere they are found in Canada and theU.S., due to a new disease called White Nose Syndrome. This is causedby a fungus that does not hurt humans, but it can wipe out entire batcolonies in a single season.
Why Bat Houses are ImportantBats significantly reduce the amount of pest insects in your backyard. An individual bat can eat thousands of insects in just one night!
Many bat species typically roost under the bark of a dead tree and other safecrevices. However, due to habitat loss, this is not always available.Bat houses provide a safe and secure home for bats to roost during the dayand to raise their young.
Help save the bats!
Contact us to reserve your bat house!
