According to American travel magazine “Travel + Leisure”, Kyoto has been selected as the most popular tourist spot among the many other renowned cities around the world (2014 and 2015), and more than 80 million tourists visit Kyoto every year.

Kyoto was the capital of Japan for more than 1000 years. After the capital was relocated to Tokyo, accumulated traditions were fused with wisdom in Kyoto, and innovative technologies and ideas have continuously been created by local firms and universities. This is evidenced by the number of high-tech companies representing Japan that have made worldwide achievements, starting in Kyoto.

You might already have noticed that Kyoto is an extremely attractive place not only for tourists but also for businesses that are planning penetration into Japan and for companies that are looking into investment in Kyoto.

WisdomTwenty-four Japanese have been awarded Nobel Prizes (as of fiscal year 2015), including twelve researchers related to Kyoto. Not only Kyoto University but 47 other universities are located in Kyoto, and the whole of the city is like a campus where Japanese wisdom is accumulated.

TraditionKyoto was the center of politics and culture in Japan for more than 1000 years, and still remains the cultural center of Japanese, and a major treasure-trove of Japanese traditional industries. The skills and spirit of Japanese craftsmanship have continued to be passed down to this day.

InnovationWhile Kyoto is a city with tradition, it has also introduced new things ahead of other cities, and imaginatively upgraded its innovations. Several global firms have started in Kyoto, and made worldwide achievements by upgrading traditional techniques into high-tech industries.

Kyoto has three strengths: “Tradition”, “Wisdom”, and “Innovation”.Kyoto is far ahead of other cities in each of these strengths, and also continues creating new value that is welcomed around the world, through structural interrelationships in this unique city.

This triangle of strengths provides the source for creative research and development and for developing unique human resources.

For a long time, Kyoto prospered as the capital of Japan. Therefore, the highest levels of craft techniques have been nourished, and a large number of traditional craft works that represent Japan have been created here in Kyoto.Techniques for traditional industries, such as Nishijin-ori (Nishijin weaving), Kyo-yuzen dyeing, Kyo-yaki and Kiyomizu-yaki pottery, and lacquerware, have been inherited from era to era, and are still present in the streets of Kyoto.

These traditional craft works are closely linked to Japanese traditional culture. “Sado (the tea ceremony)” is a good example, and can be regarded as comprehensive art. The host welcomes guests with a traditional ethos of hospitality, and entertains them with beautifully finished gardens, and with hanging scrolls, water jugs, teacups, teakettles and other articles arranged in the tearoom. All these items can be regarded as cultural fruit that has been grown in the Japanese climate. Human warmth is exchanged between the host and guests, and this can be referred to as the “aesthetics of Omotenashi (entertainment)” that represents the Japanese style of beauty.

Japan, among all other countries, can take pride in this spiritual culture, which is still deeply embedded in the city of Kyoto. Establishing an operation in this city would be sure to have

a positive effect on your business.

Kyoto as an up to date academic, cultural and research city

In 2015, the International Science Innovation Building (ISIB) was completed in the Yoshida Campus of Kyoto University. This building is aimed at creating new value based on wisdom accumulated in Kyoto University, by housing together, and facilitating exchange among, organizations related to industry-government-academia collaboration, including the Office of Society-Academia Collaboration for Innovation, Japanese and international educational and research institutions, Kyoto prefectural and municipal agencies, business firms and other organizations.

Unlike in conventional industry-academia collaboration, where specific laboratories and business firms typically undertake joint research, ISIB also promotes comprehensive collaboration between businesses, where the two parties start by examining what research can be jointly undertaken. As the economy and other factors in society become increasingly uncertain, it will become more common that universities and businesses jointly examine the division of roles between them, on an organizational basis.

Kyoto is not a mere tourist city that is only visited by tourists for its historic establishments, but also an up-to-date academic, cultural and research city. Kyoto University hopes to remain a university that issues challenges, supported by the power of Kyoto. We hope that you will fully utilize ISIB as a forum for industry-government-academia collaboration.

Nobel Prize laureates related to Kyoto

Kyoto, a city of accumulated wisdomKyoto, a city of accumulated wisdomWhy has Kyoto become a city of accumulated wisdom? There are three factors that can be construed as special features of Kyoto.

The first factor is the natural environment of Kyoto. Kyoto is a basin surrounded by mountains on three sides. Kyoto has four distinct seasons that are highly typical of Japan. I believe that this climate has nourished the fine senses of the people of Kyoto.

The second factor is the long history of Kyoto. Kyoto was the capital and center of Japan for more than 1000 years. An intense pioneer spirit has been inherited in Kyoto, which encouraged local people to construct primary schools at their own cost before the national government established a primary education system, and to operate the first train in Japan. Kyoto people are ready to do what they want by themselves, not under the control of the powers of the time. This spirit has also nourished a sophisticated culture in various aspects of Kyoto, and stimulated the five senses of local people.

As the third factor, Kyoto is one of the major religious cities of the world. Kyoto has an extremely large number of temples and shrines. As a religious city, Kyoto is filled with the pursuit of universality and with abstract thoughts and concepts. The world of sophisticated sensitivity co-exists with the world of intellectual and logical thinking.

In this way, history, culture and religion are accumulated in multiple layers over the unique climate of Kyoto. These factors enabled diverse elements to be blended with each other, producing unique awareness and creative thinking. There is no doubt that this power of Kyoto has provided a base for so many Nobel Prize and Fields Medal laureates.

To create new industries through industry-government-academia collaboration, we also promote platform activities in four areas: “ICT & Design”, “Creative Biz Creation”, “Electronics & Energy System”, and “Life Sciences”. We hold study meetings and forums inviting leading specialists. You could leverage these occasions for connecting with the local business community and enhancing your business opportunities.

We assist your participation in the business community of KyotoKyoto is sometimes compared to Silicon Valley, because of its concentrated interdisciplinary business community located in a geographically compact area. This is a rare characteristic among Japanese cities, and is regarded as of considerable value to Kyoto.

In Kyoto, business activities are often supported by culture that has been developed over the history of 1000 years within the traditionally nourished Japanese atmosphere. There is even a legend that business negotiation never fails when held in Gion, an area that symbolizes Omotenashi culture in Kyoto.

The Kyoto Research Park was opened in 1989, aimed at establishing a hub for creating new industries and for promoting industry-government-academia collaboration, through partnership between the Kyoto prefectural government, the Kyoto municipal government, and local industries.

At present, nearly 400 businesses and organizations from Japan and overseas are housed here, and provide services from private perspectives with an Omotenashi mindset. A startup facility, “KRP BIZ NEXT”, offers you the instant use of an office, equipped with secretary and other services. Even a single businessperson can efficiently start up

Kyoto has an accumulation of wisdom that represents Japan, and therefore is an extremely attractive city for private companies, because it offers potentially intensive impetus to the creation of new industries and new businesses, leveraging intellectual property that universities own.

To realize this impetus, industry-government-academia organizations in Kyoto have collaborated to establish an all-Kyoto system to back up innovations. In particular, in the southern part of Kyoto Prefecture, ranging from Kyoto City to the Kansai Cultural and Academic Research City (“Keihanna Science City”), many research facilities and organizations that support SMEs and startup businesses are located, along with a large number of global companies. Proactive initiatives are in progress to link this area as a “Kyoto Innovation Belt” to the revitalization of the local economy through industry-government-academia collaboration.

For firms that are examining penetration into Japan, it is important that the local government takes proactive initiatives to establish a favorable environment for businesses.

The Kansai Cultural and Academic Research City (“Keihanna Science City”) was opened in 1994 as one of the largest and important centers for open innovation in Japan, aiming at establishing a new hub for cultural and academic research. It was continuously developed under a national project based on industry-government-academia cooperation and collaboration. As of January 2016, 30 university-related facilities, 39 research facilities, and 60 R&D-oriented industrial facilities are located here.

Because the household fuel cel l market in Japan is the most advanced in the world , we opened a representat ive office in the Kyoto Research Park in 2014 as our fi rs t overseas office.

The main reason for having an office in Kyoto was that i t is located at the geographical center of Japan. Another reason is that our technology is closely linked to the ceramics industry, and many ceramics manufacturers are located in the Kansai Region and neighboring Chubu Region.

Amann GirrbachThe original inhouse movement in KyotoAmann Girrbach is an Austrian manufacturer of dental CAD CAM equipment and laboratory products. Japan is one of the three largest markets in dental care, along with the U.S. and Germany, therefore we opened a branch office in Japan in 2016.

Since our largest distributor in Japan is based in Kyoto, we decided to establish our branch office in this city. Additionally, many global players in the dental industry are headquartered in Kyoto as well. Given that we opened a branch office in Japan, our distributors and customers recognize how committed we are to the Japanese market and to our users. Now we can more efficiently support our partners, for example during dental shows held across Japan, and provide faster and better services.

Kyoto’s appeal is packed in a comfortably-sized area, full of rich weekend activities – an attractive city to live a high quality life.

Nintendo has been leading in video game world, but its history started when the company produced and marketed “Hanafuda”, a Japanese traditional card game in 1889. Nintendo is also known for producing playing cards for the first time in Japan. In the 1980s, Nintendo became a household name around the world for the success of “Game & Watch” and “Family Computer(Nintendo Entertainment System)”. It created new entertainment by introducing electronic technology as the basis for the production of toys.

The Fushimi area in southern Kyoto City is known as one of the major sake-producing centers in Japan. Approximately 20 major sake producers are located in this area, including Gekkeikan and Takara Shuzo. Japanese sake is made primarily from rice, rice malt and water, and requires advanced fermentation technology. The fermentation technology for sake production has led to advanced biotechnology. Takara Bio, a research & development company in biotechnology, was formed as the bio business division of Takara Shuzo.

Methods for dyeing the Japanese kimono with patterns, evolved from hand-painted “yuzen” to stencil dyeing, and then to mechanical dyeing, gradually expanding the scale of production. The technology of printing cloth with ink has been applied to printing diverse materials in different combinations. These printing technologies are also used in high-tech industries, including printed boards for electronic equipment and for more advanced semiconductor substrates. Rohm and other global manufacturers are headquartered in Kyoto.

The pottery industry called “Kyo-yaki” and “Kiyomizu-yaki” developed in Kyoto, which used to be the capital of Japan for a long time. Pottery has not only been used in commodities and art works, but has also been applied to diverse areas for its hardness, heat resistance, corrosion resistance, and high electric insulation qualities.Typical examples of applying pottery technology are ceramic capacitors and other electronic components. Kyocera and many other global electronic manufacturers are based in Kyoto, with this traditional pottery technology at their source.

“Life Sciences” are represented by iPS cell research in regenerative medicine, while “Tourism” enables visitors to experience ‘good old Japan’ in Kyoto, as one of the largest treasure houses of historic and cultural sites in the world.

In “Manufacturing”, the skills and spirit of craftsmanship that have been nourished in traditional industries have developed state-of-the-art technologies that create our present and future life.

Kyoto has also been the place of origin for the movie industry in Japan, and this culture has developed the rich “Contents” industry ranging from manga and anime to video games.

An international city concentrated into a relatively small physical space, where nature,Lifestyles

While Kyoto is a large city populated by approximately 1,500,000 people, it is also surrounded by mountains, on three sides and filled with rich greenery. The “Kamo River” runs from north to south at the center of Kyoto City, and its banks have been developed as parks, symbolizing rich natural environment in Kyoto. You can feel the transition of beautiful four seasons, which offer peace of mind and enhance your daily life.

Because Kyoto is a city of such a convenient size, many people select the bicycle as their means of transportation. As the facilities needed for work and life are all available in a small area, you can promote your business while living in a favorable residential environment.

You can also visit major sightseeing spots in Japan within a short distance, including “Amanohashidate”, one of Japan’s three scenic views, and the Miyama area, where traditional farmhouses with thatched roof (kayabuki) are located.

City in a geographically compact area, surrounded by rich natural environment

Because Kyoto was the capital of Japan for more than 1000 years and has been the center of culture, it still maintains its inheritance of traditional Japanese culture (e.g. craft, art, food) in a high concentration.

Kyoto has the largest number of temples and shrines designated as cultural properties and world heritage sites in Japan, which enables people feel authentic Japanese culture close up. People living in Kyoto are highly sensitive to art and culture, and you will also find many museums and other cultural facilities.

People are sensitive to art and culture

Many people from overseas live in Kyoto, and the city has an atmosphere which naturally accepts internationals. You can find several international schools, which eliminates barriers to your children’s education when you plan to live in together with school children.

Kyoto is highly attractive not only as a city of history and tourism, but also as a city of business. Enterprises in Kyoto have conserved what they could, while continuously leading innovation, encouraging sophisticated creativity, and providing products and services valued in the global market. Kyoto’s industry leadership with proprietary technology is underpinned by a philosophy focused on pioneering (producing new things ahead of others) and creativity (producing new things that nobody has yet tried).

We in Kyoto have promoted a project, “Kyoto: City of Wisdom-Based Industries”, providing support to wisdom-based businesses that create high-quality, high-value added products, services and business models, shifting away from mass production, leveraging the local characteristics of Kyoto and the strengths of individual companies. We believe that international companies will also find opportunities for creating new value by operating businesses in Kyoto, utilizing the wisdom-based infrastructure of universities and research institutions accumulated in Kyoto.

The Kyoto Chamber of Commerce and Industry presented a vision for Kyoto in thirty years’ time in “Kyoto Vision 2040”, in cooperation with Kyoto Prefecture, City of Kyoto, the economic circle, universities, the media, the religious circle, and other stakeholders, and proposed “Kyoto as the worldwide capital for exchange”. In this vision, we aimed to revitalize the economy by increasing the population of exchange, and we suggested “worldwide capital for culture”, “city of universities”, and “value creation city” as the mainstays for this vision. The relocation of the Agency for Cultural Affairs to Kyoto was also proposed under this vision.
