On behalf of our Board of Governors, our Senate and Faculties, and the Staff and Administration of the University, it is with great pride and pleasure that I offer congratulations to the Class of Spring

2014 graduates.

With its continuing dedication to students like each of you, Kwantlen Polytechnic University has opened its doors to success for over 250,000 people in the past 30 years. Today you join the Convocation and will assume a permanent place among the growing list of graduates who have contributed to, and become, an integral part of the University’s history.

Convocation ProtocolParents and friends are requested to rise when the graduands’ procession enters. The assembly is requested to remain standing until the conclusion of the singing of O Canada.

Convocation will conclude with the recession of the platform party, floor party and graduates, during which everyone is requested to remain standing.

Artona Photographers will be taking photographs of each student as they cross the stage and proofs will be mailed to each student following the ceremony. So as not to disrupt the program or the view of other guests we ask that you please remain seated for the duration of the ceremony.

Convocation ReceptionWe invite all graduates and their guests to enjoy refreshments immediately following the ceremony in Convocation Hall, located in the atrium of the Surrey Main building.

KPU’s StoryKwantlen Polytechnic University is an innovative, transformative and ambitious institution that serves the needs of Metro Vancouver, British Columbia, and beyond. KPU strives at all times to inspire students to excel in their careers, lead in their communities, and succeed in their lives. With campuses in Richmond, Surrey-Newton, Surrey-Cloverdale and Langley, (and now with ties to Maple Ridge) KPU has opened the doors to success for more than 250,000 graduates over its 30 year history.

Established in 1981 by the Province of British Columbia, KPU proudly adopted the name of the Kwantlen First Nation, whose people are acknowledged historically as ‘tireless runners.’ The name has proven to be prophetic as KPU, the institution, runs tirelessly to expand its capacity to serve the citizens of Metro Vancouver, the province, the nation, and the world.

KPU is a teaching university, delivering degree programs, credentials in technology and trades, career and preparatory studies, and professional education, all of which reflect and express its unique polytechnic mandate. KPU emphasizes applied degree education and is committed to broad-based undergraduate learning that prepares students for successful and rewarding careers while also providing them with the ethical framework and critical understanding necessary for good citizenship. KPU’s innovative style of education involves work-integrated and service learning, practical connection to industry and small class sizes where supportive learning environments and enhanced teacher-student relationships are valued. Honorary Doctor of Laws (Honoris Causa)Christine BrodieChristine Brodie has dedicated her career to educating and enabling her community.

Her commitment to helping others has been a theme throughout her career. As a classroom teacher, Christine worked with special needs and learning-disabled children. She was a founding member of the Richmond School District Community Outreach program, which aims to engage the five percent of all Richmond school-aged children who do not attend school. Christine personally helped bring over 200 children back into educational programs, often working evenings and weekends, and during the summer.

Christine is incredibly community-minded, and enthusiastically dedicates her time to various organizations that are concerned with the welfare of the Richmond community. She currently serves as the chair of S.U.C.C.E.S.S. – a non-profit that provides services to new Canadians – and is a member of Richmond Sunrise Rotary and the Canadian Federation of University Women. She has worked with the Richmond Caring Place Society and the Richmond Family Court Committee, and has sat on numerous boards in the financial sector, including Coast Capital Savings, Credit Union Central – BC, and The Co-operators Group.

Additionally, Christine has been an invaluable ambassador for KPU in the Richmond community, and a committed member of the university’s foundation board for 10 years. While in her role as a board member, she helped oversee KPU’s transition from a college to a university.

Honorary Doctor of Laws (Honoris Causa)Joanne CurryJoanne Curry has made a career of advancing the cause of higher education locally, provincially, and nationally – and it has been a highly successful career.

Joanne played a pivotal role in the establishment and development of Simon Fraser University’s third campus, located in Surrey City Centre. For over a decade, she served as the Executive Director of SFU Surrey, overseeing the campus’s planning, community engagement, marketing and communications, public and government relations, and management of finance, facilities, and operations.

Six years prior to her pioneering work in the community of Surrey, Joanne served as the Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer of TeleLearning Network of Centres of Excellence (NCEs), a highly influential network of Canadian ‘centres of excellence’, including 30 universities, and over 30 public and private sector members. Under Joanne’s stewardship, the network was highlighted as one of the best-managed NCEs in the country.

Joanne has been a tireless advocate for expanding and enhancing post-secondary education south of the Fraser, and her work at SFU Surrey has maximized the university’s capacity to enhance the social, economic, environmental, and cultural well-being of its community.

Honorary Doctor of Laws (Honoris Causa)Baltej Singh DhillonBaltej Singh Dhillon is head of the British Columbia RCMP Provincial Intelligence Centre. His career has included work to solve major crimes and conduct important investigations, including his role as an investigator with the 1985 Air India bombing task force.

When Baltej decided he wanted to join the RCMP, he met all of the initial requirements, but was told that the RCMP did not allow on-duty officers to wear turbans. Baltej took the matter to the then-commissioner of the RCMP, who ultimately took his side. The decision put pressure on the federal government to change their policy, and on March 16, 1990, the federal Solicitor General announced in the House of Commons that policy would be changed to allow Sikhs to wear turbans while on active duty in the RCMP.

Baltej went on to become the first turbaned cadet to enter the RCMP Academy, Depot Division in Canada’s history.

A KPU criminology alumnus, Baltej was awarded with a Distinguished Alumni Award in the fall of 2013 for his contributions to the community, and his unwavering strength and determination in the face of adversity. He was also a founding member of the KPU Alumni Association, serving on its board for a number of years.

Honorary Doctor of Laws (Honoris Causa)David AisenstatDavid Aisenstat is a Canadian success story. Following in the footsteps of his father Hy Aisenstat – founder of the famous Hy’s Steakhouse Chain – David has grown the Keg Steakhouse & Bar restaurant chain to new heights. The company now provides jobs to 14,000 employees across the country, training them to become active contributors in the workforce.

David also owns and operates several other leading restaurants, and his accomplishments in business have been widely acknowledged: in 2009, he was inducted into the BC Restaurant Hall of Fame, and over the past 11 years, the Keg has been named one of the “50 Best Employers in Canada”.

Through the Keg Spirit Foundation, David works to foster a generation of compassionate global citizens. Since its inception in 2001, the foundation has raised over $6.3 million for charities that support the development of youth through mentorship programs. The contributions of the foundation have been made possible through David’s vision, direction, and ongoing leadership as chairman of the foundation’s board of directors.

Additionally, David dedicates an extraordinary amount of personal time and resources to charities like the Vancouver Art Gallery, Action Canada, the Canadian Youth Business Foundation, Free the Children, and the Duke of Edinburgh Awards program. He even climbed Mount Kilimanjaro two years ago to raise funds for the foundation.

Distinguished Teaching Award, Part-time FacultyNargis Ghadiali, Faculty of Community and Health Studies, Health Care Assistant ProgramAn instructor in the Health Care Assistance Program, Nargis Ghadiali has been a dedicated teacher, mentor and advisor to KPU students since 2009.

Her commitment to student success over the years is noteworthy, and is clearly demonstrated in her empathy toward student needs, as well as the way in which she encourages students to reach their fullest potential in a gentle, supportive manner.

Nargis’ years of experience teaching in a variety of health care programs has resulted in a distinguished range of teaching strategies she now implements to enable her students in meaningful ways. She is a registered nurse with clinical oncology, psychology, rehabilitation, acute medical and surgery, and public health experience, previously served as a valuable volunteer to the Richmond Health Board.

With skills that extend well beyond the educational setting and a commitment to growing and maximizing each student’s potential, Nargis continues to serve KPU and its student body as a distinguished teacher.

Distinguished Teaching Award, Full-time FacultyDr . James Matteoni, Faculty of Science and HorticultureJim Matteoni has been an unwavering and active supporter of the School of Horticulture’s efforts to develop and improve quality instruction. For the over 20 years he has been at KPU, he has been a leader in implementing new teaching strategies, and a mentor to horticulture students.

Jim challenges students to learn, and faculty to teach, beyond the content of horticulture, and to apply their knowledge to think critically about the implications of these practices for the environment, and for society. The Institute for Sustainable Horticulture was spearheaded by Jim as Acting Director and has grown into a high-profile research and teaching partnership. Jim has also been active with the Richmond Farm School, teaching students applied aspects of plant science and pest management.

Jim not only strives to stay current and relevant in his field, but works exceptionally hard to develop relationships with students to provide them with the ethical framework, analytical thinking and social awareness necessary to become good citizens and leaders.

An inspiration to students, Jim is a distinguished teacher for the extent of both his scientific knowledge and his enthusiasm for teaching and learning.

Distinguished Service Award, Staff DivisionJudy Isaac, LibraryJudy Isaac has provided KPU with exceptional service for over 27 years, with the majority of her service spent as an excellent steward of the trades’ library collection.

Throughout KPU Tech’s many changes, Judy has remained a reliable constant. She knows the entire trades faculty by name, engaging them on a personal and professional basis. She understands the role a library and a strong support staff play in the success of students, and in creating a vibrant campus culture.

Judy has always been willing to go the extra mile for students, and very rarely does a student leave the Cloverdale library without their needs having been met. In addition to her hard work, Judy has contributed spirit to KPU. A keen and eager volunteer at university functions, she is the primary organizer for the annual Library Christmas Dinner, which brings together current and past library and learning centre staff over the holidays.

Distinguished Service Award, Faculty DivisionDr . Warren Bourgeois, Faculty of Arts, Philosophy and HumanitiesThirty years ago, Warren Bourgeois was the sole permanent member of KPU’s Philosophy Department. His hard work and dedication laid the foundation for what the university offers today, and over the course of three decades, he has continued to play a pivotal role in the growth of the department. This includes his work in implementing the university’s Associate of Arts degree, BA Minor and BA Major in Philosophy.

In addition to his pioneering work in developing the Philosophy Department, Warren sat on KPU’s Research Ethics Board for seven years, and served as its chair. His other noteworthy involvements include his work on the Committee to Develop a Research Policy, his work towards the development of an Academic Freedom statement, his service on the University Program Review Committee and his contributions as a member on KPU’s Policy Studies Degree Steering Committee: the latter in part out of his concern that the university tackle difficult global issues.

In the community, Warren has helped to found and has served on the Peace Arch and Surrey Memorial hospitals’ ethics committees. A 35-year director of the BC Civil Liberties Association, Warren has also worked in the community regarding civil liberties.

Warren has also engaged in scholarly work generating a publication list of journal articles and two books in philosophy. He has presented papers to philosophy colloquia and given ethics workshops at medical conferences.

Distinguished Scholarship AwardDr . Gira Bhatt, Faculty of Arts, PsychologyGira Bhatt is a distinguished teacher, mentor, researcher and scholar.

She is the Principle Investigator and Director of “Acting together: Strength-based approach to youth gang prevention,” which received the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council –Community University Research Alliance (CURA) grant. The project has garnered academic and media attention locally, nationally and internationally. The work of Acting Together has also begun to receive citations in literature, and has led to invitations to host gang-prevention training workshops: both key testaments to its immediate and long-term academic and community impact.

Gira has spearheaded initiatives within KPU’s Psychology Department, including online course development, research, honours thesis supervision and practicum supervision. As head of the psychology practicum, she has worked hard to place numerous students in research labs and industry; placements that help many students obtain competitive jobs and admission to graduate school.

Gira continuously raises the bar when it comes to curriculum, research and scholarship in KPU’s Faculty of Arts. She has also contributed articles on social issues to main stream newspapers such as the Vancouver Sun. Her work in the community, both as a chair and member on the boards of multiple organizations, and her work as a community-minded researcher, make Gira a truly distinguished scholar.

Governor General's Collegiate Bronze Academic MedalDavid Gray, Diploma in Computer Aided Design and DraftingAfter taking drafting in high school, David decided to pursue his interest in computer-aided drafting and design at the university level.With a strong skillset under his belt, David currently works for a structural engineering firm in Abbotsford. David constantly pushes himself to work hard, and to do the best that he can do. For him, the Collegiate Bronze Academic Medal is a symbol of all the time and effort he has put into obtaining his diploma.Earlier this year, David was awarded the KTC Panelboard Engineering Ltd. Award at KPU’s Trades and Technology Award ceremony.

On behalf of the Governor General of Canada, this medal is awarded annually to a KPU student who, in the opinion of the selection committee, has attained the highest academic standing in the graduation year of a two-year diploma program. It is one of the highest academic honours KPU can bestow.

Governor General's Silver Academic MedalIsabella Peggi, Bachelor of Science in NursingSince completing her program last August, Isabella has been working at the BC Children’s Hospital’s adolescent psychiatry unit. Her future plans include obtaining her master’s degree so that she can become a nursing educator or a therapist.She first enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program so that she could go on to help others. Receiving this award has given Isabella a sense of pride, as well as satisfaction that all of her hard work has been recognized. She has also received a bursary from the Frederick and Elizabeth Willet Foundation from the Registered Nurses Foundation of BC.

On behalf of the Governor General of Canada, this medal is awarded to a KPU student who, in the opinion of the selection committee, has attained the highest academic standing in the graduation year of a bachelor’s degree program. It is one of the highest academic honours KPU can bestow.

Lieutenant Governor's MedalAlexander Baydala, Certificate in Computer Aided Design and Drafting - ArchitecturalFor Alexander, the Lieutenant Governor’s Medal is important because it represents his dedication, self-discipline and determination to do his absolute best. Dealing with Asperger syndrome and overcoming an unhealthy lifestyle are two big challenges Alexander has faced throughout his life. Understanding what instructions mean and socializing with peers was difficult, but with counselling and a strong commitment to doing what he feared most, Alexander thrived in his CADD Technologies program.In addition to drafting, Alexander enjoys playing and coaching baseball and softball, volunteering, European history and playing in AutoCAD and Revit.Earlier this year, he was recognized with the Lori Neil Memorial Award at KPU’s Trades and Technology Awards ceremony.

On behalf of the Lieutenant Governor of B.C., this medal is awarded to a graduate studying a substantial vocational or career program of fewer than two years, as well as someone who has excelled in their studies, and contributed in a positive way to KPU or the community.

George C. Wootton AwardDavid Dryden, Bachelor of Business Administration in Entrepreneurial LeadershipDavid chose KPU’s Entrepreneurial Leadership program because it was the most challenging, and rewarding, program in the School of Business.His ability to balance his full-time studies, academic goals, part-time work and multiple extra-curricular commitments came from his perseverance, and drive to achieve his goals in each aspect of his life.David currently works as a financial consultant with Investors Group. He is also a board member of BC School Sports, and an executive committee member for the Vancouver Board of Trade’s Leaders of Tomorrow program.During his academic career at KPU, David has garnered 25 other school of business or general awards, as well as the President’s Outstanding Graduate Award for a diploma program in 2011.

President's Outstanding Graduate Award, Bachelor's Degree ProgramAlexandria Parsons, Bachelor of Arts, Major in Psychology, Minor in CounsellingWith a multitude of questions about why people are the way they are, Alexandria found her answers in KPU’s psychology program.A high school dropout, there was a period of Alexandria’s life where attending post-secondary was not a part of the plan. She was also a single-mom, working full-time to support her son.Alexandria has overcome personal and familial challenges to become a first generation university student who put everything into her studies. She has been on the Dean’s honour roll for 11 consecutive semesters, and has received several awards, including the HSBC Bank Canada Award and the Dr. Miriam Yu Award.Alexandria is currently a clinic assistant at Richmond Counselling and Psychotherapy clinic, and a research assistant in Dr. Cory Pedersen’s ORGASMLab at KPU. This fall, Alexandria will begin her MA in Counselling Psychology at SFU, the next step in her journey to attain her PhD.

President's Outstanding Graduate Award, Diploma ProgramCassie Plotnikoff, Diploma in Horticulture Technology Greenhouse/Nursery Production

Cassie started at KPU after deciding to quit her job to follow her passion. Encouragement from family and friends, as well as the desire to learn, led her to seek out hands-on growing experience that was rooted in science.Her interests include hiking and cycling, as well as cooking, preserving, baking and sharing food with friends and family.An aspiring beekeeper, Cassie volunteers with Hive for Humanity, and the award will allow her the financial help to continue to do so. Her end career goal is to work in a community engagement role by growing, teaching, advocating and celebrating food locally.

HeraldryThe Arms of Kwantlen Polytechnic University were presented at a ceremony on May 4, 1999 by the Right Honourable Romeo LeBlanc, Governor General of Canada.

The centre shield features ‘The Spirit of KPU’ emblem comprising a wolf, a salmon, and a river azure as styled by Brandon Gabriel.

At the top of the blue shield, on the left side a lion and on the right a tiger facing each other in the rampant position (upright on one hind leg with forelegs outstretched as if attacking). And at the bottom of the blue shield, on the left a jaguar and on the right a Chinese dragon also facing each other in the rampant position. All are gold.

At the top in the centre, there is an open book with silver or white pages, bindings in gold and on top of it, a gold horizontal (in fess) rectangle (billet) with square bites taken out of the long sides

(bretessed). In modern heraldry, this item is meant to represent a computer chip.

The crest appears above the shield, and is supported by a silver and blue twisted fabric wreath. The upper rim is set with a simple silver crown, the upper edge decorated with four salmon, looking at each other in pairs.

Supporting the arms is a green grassy mound, scattered with gold Douglas Fir cones. The mound is rising from wavy horizontal bands of blue and silver. This is the traditional heraldic representation of water - either river or ocean.

On the left is a gold female deer with blue hooves, and her bottom half is a silver fishtail with gold fins. Around her neck is a wreath of twisted silver and blue cloth. Hanging from the wreath is a green disk with an open book on it—the pages are silver; the cover is gold.

On the right is a gold eagle with a silver head, with blue talons and beak. Around his neck is a wreath like the doe’s and hanging from it is a green disk with the heraldic representation of a gold computer chip.

The motto reads: Through Tireless Effort, Knowledge and Understanding.

University MaceThe mace was originally a weapon during the medieval period, and came to be associated with the prowess and strength of the knight. Today the mace is a symbol of the university’s authority to award degrees and diplomas. It indicates the seriousness of Convocation as the university’s most important academic ceremony, and is a confirmation of the university’s integrity as an academic institution. The mace is carried by a mace-bearer, who leads the processional of faculty and students in to and out of the venue where Convocation is held. The mace is usually between four feet and six

feet in length and will incorporate the history and tradition that surround the vision for the university.

An academic mace symbolizes the authority vested in the chancellor to confer university credentials. This is why the mace is an integral part of Convocation.

Maces are often commissioned to commemorate a milestone anniversary or presidential inauguration. Typically an artist is selected for the honour to develop a highly symbolic design that incorporates the university’s traditions.

KPU’s mace was carved by Kwantlen First Nation artist Drew Atkins.

RegaliaNot until they slip into their regalia, do many graduands realize the significance of their Convocation ceremony. For family and friends, the first glimpse of the graduand in cap and gown heralds a milestone in the life of their loved one.

Standard for Academic DressAt Kwantlen Polytechnic University, all graduates wear a maroon gown of Oxford shape and a black cap with a black tassel. Graduates of our bachelor's degree programs wear hoods in the Aberdeen style, made of black pilgrim cloth and bordered with a one half inch border. The border of each hood is a specific colour that identifies a particular area of study.

Honorary Degree RecipientsAll Honorary degree recipients wear an eight-sided tam of navy blue velvet with gold bullion cord tassels. The gown is of Oxford shape using maroon pilgrim cloth for the body and sleeves, with three navy blue velvet chevrons and silver velvet panels. Hoods for honorary graduates are of intercollegiate style, maroon in colour to match the gowns, with a sugarbeet satin lining, a silver satin chevron and trim, and grey piping.
