live in the Fraser Valley and find employment in legal firms located in this area this hascreated a problem for them Either the graduates have had to relocate to the Vancouver areain order to pursue their career choice or have decided not to further their education because ofunavailability and travel

In May 2004 the Law Society of British Columbia Paralegal Task Force recommended to theBenchers elected members of the Law Society to administer the work of the society that theduties of the qualified Paralegal be expanded in which Paralegals could in some areas workindependently of lawyers and give legal advice for example in Small Claims Therefore it isanticipated that the demand for Paralegals will increase According to BC Works Futures2003 it is anticipated that the number of employed Paralegals will increase from2280 in1990 to4530 in 2008

ICBC also anticipates an increase in demand for qualified Paralegals and sees a need forKwantlen University College to offer a Paralegal Diploma see attached letter

Dear Madam

Re Paralegal Studies Diploma

We are writing in support of Kwantlen University College implementing a Paralegal StudiesDiploma

The Insurance Corporation of British Columbia retains approximately 110 law firms throughoutBC to defend actions brought against it and its policy holders In directing the conduct of ourlitigation we strongly encourage the employment of paralegals as an effective and economicaluse of legal resources

There are few British Columbia educational institutes offering programs in paralegal studiessuch that the demand far exceeds the supply of academically trained paralegals ICBC is notalone in wishing to increase the involvement of paralegals in the conduct of its legal work Manylaw firms and their clients express frustrations about the short supply of qualified paralegalsThis is particularly so outside the city of Vancouver

We see no reason for this chronic shortage of qualified paralegals to decrease unless thesupply substantially increases To that end we see a need for Kwantlen University College tooffer a Paralegal Diploma in the SurreyFraser Valley area

We have reviewed the curriculum for semesters 1 and 2 as well the calendar descriptions forsemesters 3 and 4 We approve in principle the curriculum and look forward to reviewing inmore detail the completed program

Dear SirsMesdames

Re Legal Assistant Program

It was a pleasure once again to be able to discuss the proposal for the Legal Assistantdiploma program at Kwantlen University College

Upon considering the research that you conducted and information obtained I endorse theprogram completely There is always a need and in fact a growing demand for LegalAssistants in British Columbia The BC Association of Legal Assistants has been working inconjunction with The Law Society to expand its members responsibilities in order to providea broader scope of legal services to the lawyer and ultimately the client

In support of this proposal I am happy to endorse the program at my firm throughcommunication with the Lawyers and also Legal Assistants who I feel could offer significantcontribution to the programscurriculum if requested

DearSirsMesdames

Re Legal Assistant Program Kwantlan University College Surrey Campus

We understand that discussion is being held with respect to the implementation of a LegalAssistant Program at Kwantlan University College Surrey Campus We write in support of such aprogram Over the past several years our firm has hired several certified legal assistants and aswell has supported a number of legal secretaries who have taken or are taking courses to obtaintheir Legal Assistants certificates There is an ongoing need for support staff at this level

We have hired graduates from the Kwantlan University College legal secretarial program over theyears and have always been impressed with their training and skills The course is taught at thehighest level and the results are indicative of this It would be most beneficial to have a legalassistantscourse taught at this same high level of achievement

As well the location of the College would be of benefit to many of our employees as they live inthe DeltaSurreyFrllser Valley area and have difficulty attending classes downtown or in NorthVancouver

We are hopeful that the College will soon be offering a Legal Assistant Program and look forwardto receiving further information in this regard

i am a lawyer practicing in the area of family law I previously practicedfor many years as a partner in the firm of MacLean Nicol Family Lawyers

For quite a few years MacLean Nicol accepted practicum students from theKwantlen College Legal Secretarial Program We found that all of thestudents who came to work for us were very well trained and ready to assumeconsiderable responsibilities in our office As our firm grew we werefortunate to be able to acquire our new legal secretarial staff from thestudents who had done their practicum with us

I am sure that students trained in the proposed legal assistant or paralegalprogram at Kwantlen University College would be equally well prepared and Iwrite to provide my endorsement of the proposed program

I am writing this letter in support of the proposed Paralegal program at KwantlenUniversity College I am a former student of Kwantlen college having successfullycompleted the Legal Secretarial Applied Business Technology Program I graduatedfrom the Applied Business Technology program in April of 2003 and have since beenemployed at the law office of Richards Richards I am making thisrecommendation as I strongly believe that a Paralegal program offered by Kwantlencollege would be significantly beneficial as it is a continuation of legal training for thelegal profession Not only would this program enable students to further enhancetheir legal training but it would also make this program more easily accessible as Ibelieve that there are only two other colleges offering this program in the lowermainland

Please feel free to contact me at 604 6436203 ifyou would like any furtherinformation

Dear Ms Galea

Re Legal Assistant Diploma

I am writing in response to your letter regarding the above mentioned diplomaprogram I fully support Kwantlen University offering this program As agraduate of the Legal Secretary program I would be very interested in returningto Kwantlen to upgrade my skills as a Legal Assistant I believe it would be verybeneficial for myself and for others who live in the outlying areas of yourcampuses because Douglas College in New Westminster is the only othercampus offering this program The location of your campuses would allowpeople who live out of the Greater Vancouver region the opportunity to partake inthis program

I have wanted to continue my education in the legal field but have found it difficultbecause of the reasons mentioned above If Kwantlen should offer this programin the future it would give me the opportunity to continue my education andwould allow other people to fulfill their goals as well

I look forward to further correspondence regarding this program and hope thatKwantlen decides to go ahead with offering this program I would love to returnas a student

I am very interested in the Legal Assistant Diploma program should it be offered at Kwantlen UniversityCollege 1 graduated from the Legal Secretarial Certificate program at Kwantlen in June of 1998 1 havebeen very interested in continuing my studies in this field however the main reason I have not is because theonly school that offers the Legal Assistant program is Capilano College and living in Richmond thecommute has been the main obstacle 1 would be very excited to hear of the program being offered at theRichmond campus 1 have many friends as well that have mentioned that the downfall of the course is that itis offered so far away

1 believe that there is a real need for this course in other areas of the Vancouver mainland and that theresponse would be enormous However 1 do have a suggestion to rename the program Paralegal DiplomaAfter working in the legal field for some time there seems to be a huge debate about the confusion betweenLegal Assistants and Legal Secretaries The firm 1 worked at last decided to formally change the title fromLegal Assistant to Paralegal as too many secretaries were referring to themselves as Assistants as they feltthat the title Secretary was not appropriate for the duties that they performed Many lawyers as well arestarting to call their secretaries assistants

Please contact me by telephone as soon as any courses are in place Thank you for accepting mysuggestions

I graduated from Kwantlen College in May of 2001 I have been employed with BaumgartelGould since my work experience back in April of 2001

I have been looking into taking the legal assistant course since May of this year Unfortunatelyit is only offered in Vancouver which would mean that I would have a far way to commute Ihave held off applying for this because of that very reason

My time at Kwantlen College was incredible I found the teachers were friendly and that helpwas always at my finger tips When I attended at Kwantlen almost all of the students in myclass asked if the assistant course would be offered We were all very disappointed that itwasnt

I fully support the Legal Assistant Diploma Program and would be one of the first people toapply Having this course offered in the Surrey or Langley area would definitely benefit myselfand other people that I know

Thank you for your questionnaire regarding the Legal Assistant Diploma at KwantlenUniversity College

1 support this diploma program because a lot of employers want to employ people with aLegal Assistant Diploma as opposed to those who have the Legal Secretarial Certificate1 have been turned down a couple of times because employers chose someone with aLegal Assistant Diploma over my Legal Secretarial Certificate

The Legal Assistant Diploma program would benefit the community by having graduateswith advanced and specialized up to date legal knowledge This in turn would enablegraduates to earn good wages

It will also be beneficial if you had a program where lawyers were willing to recruit yourgraduating students A lot of private colleges help their students obtain jobs from theirinventory of employers

1 was fortunate to get a parttime job at the law firm where I did my practicumUnfortunately due to there not being enough work and there being an excess of staff Iwas laid off in March 2002 Most law firms are not willing to train new graduates

1 would appreciate being considered for the Legal Assistant Diploma

This is to inform you of my interest in the above mentioned course I have been huntingfor the Legal Assistant or the Paralegal program for a few years now and have only foundit to be available with Capilano College

1 am glad to hear that you are working to bring this course around to Kwantlen UniversityCollege It will be very inconvenient for me travel to Capilano College in NorthVancouver as I live in Richmond I have my certificates both in the OfficeAdministration Legal Secretarial Option program and Information TechnologySpecialist program I have been looking to further my education in the legal area and amvery much interested in attending Kwantlen University once again

It will be best for me to travel to Kwantlen University located at Lansdowne andtherefore was wondering if you would be bringing this program around to all yourbranches

1 spotted great job opportunities for a qualified legal assistantparalegal than a legalsecretary and was yet disappointed to learn that it is not offered at many reputablecolleges and universities This does bring some hope to students like me as I have beenwaiting for a long time

Please feel free to call me at 604 279 8544 or email me at cheryl@murallicom

Sincerely

Cheryl Selvendran

The purpose of this letter is to support the proposed legal assistant program at KwantlenUniversity College I graduated from the Collegeslegal secretarial program in June of 2000 andfound their curriculum to be practical and thorough with an emphasis on problem solving skills thathas been consistent with the qualities sought by subsequent employers Since then I have beensteadily employed in this field beginning my first job one week after completing the course 1 ampresently a litigation secretary with Poulsen and Company where I have been working since January2001 I had had no clerical training or experience before attending Kwantlen

A legal assistant program at Kwantlen would provide the following advantages

a Kwantlen has four campuses located in communities throughout the Lower Mainland andeasily accessible by transit to students outside the downtown core

b In todays economy this field is a possibility for people seeking retraining afterdownsizing or layoffs have left them unemployed

c There is a need for legal support staff in the Lower Mainland As ajunior secretary withsix months experience I was offered four jobs within a week ofbeginning my search Ihave heard similar stories from other assistants

d The legal field is constantly changing and it is important that support staff upgrade theirskills and remain flexible Although most assistants specialize in one area of law takingcourses in different disciplines increases options salary possibilities and their value totheir employer

e A legal assistant degree can be a steppingstone to a number of careers without the heavydebt that a full time university degree usually incurs

I am writing as a graduate o f the Legal Secretarial programme with respect to theenclosed feedback form I was delighted to receive this information and to hear thatKwantlen University College is considering a Legal Assistant Diploma Programme

I would support this program for a number of reasons namely the absolute need for aLegal Assistant program in the Surrey area Although there are one or two schools suchas Capilano College that do offer this programme they are not as easily susceptible to usstudents in the Surrey area As it was already in my plans to attend a Legal Assistantprogram in the near future as 1 feel that becoming a Legal Assistant is the next step formyself in my career and has many advantages to offer I feel that further education in thelegal field will help build my personal confidence as well as my confidence with clients

I think that it is very important that the Legal Assistant program being developed atKwantlen should ensure that the courses to be offered were university transferablecourses I feel this would be beneficial to myself and other students in the community asit would also contribute towards a Bachelor of Arts degree I feel as a member of thelegal support community that the process to become a Legal Secretary or Assistant takesas much work and dedication as any other university transferable program or diploma Ialso think it would be beneficial that any Legal Assistant programme developed atKwantlen have an affiliation with the Legal Assistants Society of British Columbia

I believe that a Legal Assistant program at Kwantlen University College would benefitthe community because it would be the first of its kind available to students in Surrey Itwould cut down on the cost of commuting for Surrey students and it would provideanother opportunity to students who are already part of the legal support community tofurther their education and in doing so their opportunities in life

I would like to express again my wholehearted interest in the development of a LegalAssistant programme at Kwantlen University College Please feel free to contact me atthe above noted number for any further input on this programme I would be happy andeager to help in the process of the development of this programme

Yours truly

Dear Ms Galea

Re Applied Business TechnologyLegal Secretarial Option

I write further to your recent correspondence enclosing a questionnaire regarding aLegal Assistant Diploma

I believe that a Legal Assistant Diploma option would be an asset to KwantlenUniversity College Currently the closest college that I am aware of that offers sucha course is Capilano As you know this campus is in Vancouver quite a distancefrom Chilliwack I had planned on attending Capilano but due to financial reasons Icould not afford to live in Vancouver and go to school

If there were to be a class offered at Kwantlen University Langley Campus I couldattend parttime and work thus being able to afford to further my education

Sincerely

Dear SirsMesdames

Re Legal Assistant Program

It is my pleasure to provide this letter of support for the proposed Legal Assistant diplomaprogram at Kwantlen University College

I enrolled in the legal secretary program at Kwantlen University College in 1997 1998 and

had the pleasure of doing my practicum at the Vancouver law firm of Alexander HolburnBeaudin Lang I was hired on as a legal secretary following graduation and have beenemployed at Alexander Holburn Beaudin Lang ever since

I was very pleased with the level of education I received while enrolled in the legal secretaryprogram at Kwantlen University College The program curriculum covered all areas of lawgiving me the knowledge and confidence necessary to enter into the workplace The programinstructors were very informative and available to provide extra assistance when necessaryAnother aspect of the legal secretary program that I found beneficial was the use of a variety ofsoftware programs which assisted in further preparing me for the workplace Based on myexperience I believe that a Legal Assistant program would be an excellent addition toKwantlen Universityscurrent program selection and a great opportunity for those interested inentering the field of law

I look forward to hearing more about the proposed Legal Assistant diploma program in thefuture If you have any questions or comments please do not hesitate to contact me
