    T h o u s a n d s o f Ba l i n e s eConverge on Mt. Batur to Praya n d D a n c e t o C a l m aSmoldering Volcano.

Thousands of devoutBalinese Hindus converged atBali's Mt. Batur on Sunday,December 5, 2010, to participate in

two sacred ceremonies dedicatedto preventing a cataclysmicexplosion of the still active volcano.

The est imated 6 ,000devotees, coming from all cornersof Bali, but with many from thenearby village of Songan inKintamani, climbed the smokingpeak to participate in the Wana

    Kertih and DanuK e r t i hceremonies.

    T h ethousands ofworshippersoverwhelmed the narrowand rough-hewn pathsup the peak,preventingmore than1 , 0 0 0people fromclimbing the

    mountain andnecessitating they remain on thep e a k ' s f o o t h i l l s ,par t ic ipa t ing f rom adistance in the Wana Kerticeremony being held at the

    edge of the smokingcaldera.

Th e e l a b o r a teofferings and sacrifices tothe mountain began at 7:00am lasted until 9:00 pm.The ceremony beganbefore dawn in the earlymorning at the northeastedge of the mountain withprayers at the Pura BukitCatu temple.

T h e t w oceremonies the WanaKertih held at the peak ofMount Batur and the Danu

Kertih held on the shores oflake Batur - includedofferings, ritual prayersand sacred dances.

The arduous andsometimes precarious1,717 meter climb to themountain's peak did notdissuade thousand ofworshippers, who includedan 83 year-old teacher andhis wife who managed tomake it to the top. The

    Noteworthy during the

celebrations held on December 5,2010, was a sudden rainfall of 10minutes duration that occurredwithout warning. Rel igiousobservers saw the rain asconfirmation that the rituals hadreceived the blessing of theAlmighty - Ida Sang Hyang WidiWasa.

T h e W a n a K e r t i hceremony, held at the peak, involved the sacrifice of live goatsto the volcano's smoking craterand is intended to ensure cosmicbalance is maintained betweenman, God and nature. In response

to recently heightened warnings ofdangerous volcanic activity on Mt.Batur, the ceremony, at its mostbasic level, was intended toforestall any devastating eruption.

According the NusaBali, concurrent ceremonies held onthe shores of lake Batur and at theBale Agung Desa PakramanSongan were also "blessed" bybrief but intense rainfall.

Howdy howdy folks, and with only just over a week to go beforeChristmas it's a good time at the moment on the island. Has anyoneelse noticed the amount of tourists and visitors has jumped a heap withthe expectation that the numbers will further increase till the end of theAustralian school holidays. I think it's a great time to take a perch in anynumber of places along one of the many main streets or busy shoppingareas in and around Kuta to just people watch. Some of the funniestthings I have seen up here are the yearly schoolies that head up for theannual pilgrimage of partying.

I will tell you about one thing I did see today while in the bank loading the wallet ready for anotherweek on the little green bottles. Now, we all know that things up here happen rather differently to how theyhappen at home and most of us except this and work with it as best possible, anyway, there I was standingat the counter waiting to do what I needed to do, while an Australian women, clearly on holidays, was buyingsome American dollars. The fact that she was abusive and impatient aside, because she couldn'tunderstand why she had to change her hard earned Australian money into rupiah so she could then buyAmerican dollars. Basically you are in Indonesia and they work in the Rupiah, so of course you will work inlocal currency. I stood there in disbelief as she proceeded to tell the young Balinese teller how stupid shewas and basically made a complete arse of herself in front of the 30 other people waiting to get served. Aterrible ambassador to say the least.

I think everybody that comes here to enjoy the Christmas break should remember that we are allvisitors to Bali and should act as such. Just because you can't understand why things happen differentlyhere, is no reason to start giving the locals a hard time. I think all Australians should act as grownups (evenafter 16 green bottles) for the duration of your stay and not be an embarrassment to our great nation. TheBalinese try very hard to do their best and make the island a great place to visit or live, so basically if youdon't like it, don't come back and leave the island to the rest of the travellers who have manners.

With that off my chest I would like to say to all my Balinese mates to enjoy the end of their festiveseason (Kuningan) and do hope that they enjoyed their holidays which end on Saturday. Selamat Hari RayaKuningan. Om Santi Santi Santi.

Ok punters again I will close for the week and hope you all stay safe, dry and always remember, it isvery strange that the years teach us patience and the shorter our time is, the greater our capacity for waitingbecomes.

    Enjoy your week,

    ALIASJ..

20-Year-Old Mitch Gillam of WesternAustralia Dies in Bali Motorcycle Mishap.

A 20-year-old Western Australianelectrician's apprentice night of holiday revelry

ended tragically when he died in a motorcyclemishap in the Kerobokan area of Bali. The man, Mitchell Blair Gillam, was

driving a motorcycle in tandem with a friend,Juel Palbort, after, according to police, the twohad been drinking beer and vodka at local bars.Riding in the rain in the early hour ofWednesday, December 8, 2010, Gillam isthought to have skidded out-of-control andcrashed. When local residents stumbled ontothe scene they found Palbort unconscious andrushed the man to a local hospital. Dark and inthe rain, residents were unaware that Gillamwas also involved and had tumbled out of sightinto the nearby Umalas River.

O n l y a f t e r P a l b o r t r e g a i n e dconsciousness was he able to raise and alarmfor his missing friend, Gillam. Based onPalbort's report and a physical description ofGillam, police were eventually able to connectthe mysterious discovery on Thursday of thedecomposing body of a tourist found in theUmalas area Kerobokan with the trafficaccident and the missing man.

Police and forensic officers then made apreliminary identification of the man via adistinctive body tattoo on the man's buttock.

Police forensic scientists are stilldetermining what role, if any, alcoholconsumption may have played in the fatal crash.

Future not Black and white for SimonWhat does the future hold?Simon Black (r) endured theLions' tough season in 2010and is not sure what he will docome 2012.

Retirement may not be onSimon Black's mind - but theBrisbane Lions veteran admits hewill be playing the 2011 AFL

season as if it is his last. The Brownlow Medallist

said he was jumping out of his skinas he prepared for his 14thseason.

And the triple premiershipwinner said he never thought

about walking awaybefore agreeing to sign on foranother year with stalwart LukePower - albeit on a dramaticallyreduced wage due to salary cappressures.

But Black did not have tobe told he would have to assesshis future on a season to seasonbasis - and 2011 may yet be hisswansong.

"I am 32 next year. Younever know when your last one(season) is so you play as if it isyour last," Black said.

"Luke and I are at thatstage now. You've got to go outand try and enjoy every moment.

"I still love the game asmuch as I did when I was 18.

"You enjoy it more whenyou have success and we didn'thave a lot of that last year."

    Turning around the Lions'

    fortunes is certainly motivatingBlack.

A season after making thefinals, the Lions began 2010 wellwith four straight wins - only tofinish 13th with a woeful 3-15finish.

"I never thought I wantedto retire (before re-signing) - itwas just frustrating," Black said ofthe Lions.

    "But of course towards the

can get that next year."I am hoping we can play

a bit better next year because weneed to - we we're a fair way offthe mark."

Black resumed pre-season training late last weekalong with Power and captainJonathan Brown.

He said he had to "listento the body" more and tailor histraining in order to get through yetanother season.

And then there is theGabba surface.

Black said he "wasn'tsurprised" with Gold Coast Sunsrecruit and ex-Lion JaredBrennan this week claiming hehad suffered a serious ankleinjury due to the Gabba surfaceand its cricket wicket area.

"The Gabba is a very hardsurface," Black said.

"Whether it has cut thetiming of some careers there isprobably an argument - someguys probably thought it would.

"But I am not sure whatthey can do with it.

"It comes off a concretebase I believe, it is great for waterrun-off but not for the surface ofthe ground - we will have to livewith it.

Parramatta have heldcontract discussions with BrettKimmorley, Trent Barrett, QuadeCooper, Craig Gower, CooperCronk, Braith Anasta and MattOrford ... only to miss out on all ofthem.

And their signings for2011 have hardly had Eels fansdoing high-fives - Carl Webb,Reni Maitua, Chris Walker,Jordan Atkins and CaseyMcGuire.

Have the Eels alreadyblown it for 2011?

Parramatta were alreadya club under pressure aftermissing last year's finals and then

    sacking grand final coachDaniel Anderson.

Many Eels fans fear evenmore pressure will be heaped onNathan Hindmarsh next season.

    "I hope Parramatta have

"They will have to worksomething out pretty quickly but, with Eric gone, it will be difficult."

Asked about Tahu'simminent departure, Kenny said:"They had to get rid of him.

"The way Sammy left theguys last season, it has been aquite easy job to go into," Hodgesaid.

"The attitude of the guysin the preseason has been great.

"I haven't had to do too

much as yet. If it stays that wayI'll be rapt."The last three years I've

learnt a lot off Sammy. He hashelped me out a fair bit.

"I've always got himthere if I'm unsure of anything."

Hodge 's commentscome after Hawks great DermottBrereton caused a stir earlierthis year when he said Hodgeshould be captain of the club, describing the hard-nosedmidfielder as a spiritual leaderfor the players.

    The comments caused

appears Mitchell steppeddown to ease tension at the club.

"I'll try to get as many pastcaptains as I can to see the bestway to lead," Hodge said.

"I was thinking about goingto have a chat to Bucks (NathanBuckley). But I might not, nowseeing he's going to be taking over

the job next year (in 2012) atCollingwood."Hodge says he is feeling

great, coming off a stunning yearwhich included being named theAll Australian captain.

    " G e t t i n g c l o s e t oChristmas, you always can't waitfor that little break," he said.

Hodge also says he is"rapt" at the AFL's decision to stickwith grand final replays rather thanplaying extra-time, following thisyear's controversial draw betweenCollingwood and St Kilda, with theMagpies winning the replay.

Swimming fast ... Geoff HuegillGeoff Huegill plans to draw on hiswealth of exper ience to re-energise for the world short coursechampionships starting in Dubaion Wednesday.

Huegill admits the mediaattention surrounding his incrediblecomeback in the pool took it out of himin the aftermath to his goldenCommonwealth Games, but he hasrevealed he is desperate to finish2010 on a high.

The 31-year-old took gold inthe 100 metres butterfly and 4x100m

medley events at the Delhi Gamesand will contest those events as wellas the 50m butterfly in Dubai.

Australia's comeback athleteof the year says he is a little shockedat how fresh he is feeling after anexhausting season in and out of thepool.

" I don ' t f ee l t oo badsurprisingly. Obviously the last coupleof weeks after Delhi were pretty fullon," Huegill said.

"I've had plenty of rest which

is good and I still feelstrong and I'm still swimming fast,so we'll just draw on experienceand see how we go."

The spotlight has beenfirmly on Huegill all year, after helost a considerable amount ofweight to make his comeback.

However, the Australianteam veteran says he has beenhappy to take on the extrapromotional stress along the way.

"I think it was always goingto be like that," Huegill said.

    " S o a s l o n g a s I

maintained being in the pool everysingle day and kept my strength upin the gym, I could gi ve myself thebest opportunity coming intoDubai."

Australia has sent atalented squad to the short coursechampionships and is keen toresume its rivalry with swimminggiants, the United States, who areminus Michael Phelps.

Perhaps the most hotlycontested match-up of the event

will be in the breaststroke, with Leisel Jones going up againsther American nemesis RebeccaSoni.

Australia head coach LeighNugent admits Jones is not in peakform, but has the pool smarts to getresults.

"I've been to her programtwice since the Comm Games, shedidn't take much of a break at all andshe's been training particularly well,"he said.

"She probably isn't at peakfitness at the minute but she's

working towards that and this is ameet that serves as a step along theway to the world champs andultimately London.

"The best women in theworld are here, and it'll be a greatopportunity for them to test eachother."

Wor ld record ho ldersBrenton Rickard and ChristianSprenger will also try and make animpact in the men's breaststroke, even though they will start as

    M i t c h e l l J o h n s o n a n dAustralia fast bowlingcoach Troy Cooley havegone to ext raord inarylengths to return the Testquick to his best this week.

Tales are being told ofexot ic dr i l ls invo lv ingtrampolines at the bowlingcrease and balls delivered atan exceedingly slow pace, all geared at returningJohnson to the higher actionthat brought him so muchswing and success in SouthAfrica early last year.

After being droppedfrom the Australia XI for thesecond Ashes Test, Johnsonand Cooley spent long hoursin the Adelaide Oval nets, then more time in Perth oncethe match ended in a horridinnings defeat.

    Cooley, too, is in thespotlight over whether hisexceptional ability to befriendfast bowlers and make themfeel comfortable exists withoutthe technical skills to correctJ o h n s o n ' s o u t - o f - k i l t e rmethods.

Fellow paceman RyanHarris says the decision to keepJohnson out of Sheffield Shieldcricket to spend more time inthe nets was the right one.

"It's a lot easier in the

nets than in the middle," hesaid.

"Personally, I would'veliked to have done the samething, stayed in the nets andwork with the coach and look atvideo, that's going down to afine point but if you arestruggling (it helps).

"If you're not sure aboutsomething, rather than trying torectify it in a game, he can gointo the nets, spend as long as

you want over it."Should Johnson play -

no sure thing in Perth giventhe presence of three otherquicks in the squad - he willalso need greater help fromhis team-mates.

Harris admits theAustralians did not made

enough of their bowlingpartnerships in Adelaide, acommon problem whenindividuals are playing fortheir own spot rather thanworking towards a collectivegoal.

    " B o w l i n g i npartnerships gets wickets, assimple as that," Harris said.

"It is something I'vetried to teach the Bullsbowlers.

"It's very importantbecause if one bloke's

bowling six dots at one endand the other bloke's leakingruns or two or three boundariesan over, there's no pressure.

"So I guess we probablydidn't do that as well in Adelaide,we did it in patches, butsomething that we have spokenabout and hopefully can rectify, because that will draw the errorsfrom the English batsmen andhopefully they won't be makingthose big scores.

Suns lock up Swallow unti l 2013

    Gold Coast are hopingSwallow is the pillar oft h e S u n s ' f u t u r esuccess.

As a proud WesternAustralian, Guy McKenna knowsonly too well the lure for Perth kidsto play AFL in their home state.

Which made WA younggun David Swallow's decision to

    e x te n d h i s co n t r a c t w i thMcKenna's Gold Coast Suns foranother 12 months all the moresatisfying.

Suns coach McKennacould not hide his delight when heconfirmed the No.1 draft pick hadincreased his commitment toinclude a third year on the glitterstrip.

Swallow flew out of Perthas a 16-year-old to play with theGold Coast - a move that paid offbig time when he was the first to besnapped up by the Suns at the AFLDraft.

But former West Coastchampion McKenna admitted hewas still wary that returning homemay prove too tempting for theyoungster.

"He's a West Australianand home is home - we know thatis one of our greatest challenges,"McKenna said on Monday.

"We don't want this to behis second home - this has tobecome his home."

    B u tM c K e n n ahoped youngguns such asS w a l l o wle a r n e d th esame lessonson the GoldCoast as he did

during his glorydays with theWe s t Co a s tEagles.

    "Extensio n s o f

contracts, money and all thataside, ultimately it is aboutbeing part of a successfulgroup," he said.

"At West Coast wewere in the finals for 10 years.

    "A lot of blokes tooksacrifices.

    " T h e y h a dopportunities to go elsewhere

but decided to stay because itis about winning and beingpart of a successful group."

Swallow may have hadhis contract extended withouteven playing a game butMcKenna said he had alreadyseen enough to keep him untilthe end of the 2013 season.

    While his skills at VFLlevel ensured a strongshowing in the JJ ListonTrophy for the best and fairestplayer this year, Swallow'sw o r k e t h i c w a s w h a timpressed McKenna the most.

"He was one of theyoungest on our list last yearso to have the season that hehad (in VFL) he obviously hasa bright future," McKennasaid.

"But to have one ofyour youngest kids come onand actually get taken offtraining on a Wednesdaybecause he is doing too muchsays a lot - he set a

locked up his short term future."I'm now going to be here

Arsenal midfield gun SamirNasri is worked off the ballby Darren Fletcher (R) andMichael Carrick .

Park Ji-Sung scored theonly goal of the game asManchester United moved to thetop of the Premier Leaguetable at the expense of Arsenal

with a 1-0 win over theGunners at Old Trafford thismorning.

United, which nowleads by two points and alsohas a game in hand over alltheir title rivals, could evenafford the luxury of a missedpenalty 17 minutes from timewhen Wayne Rooney firedwildly over the bar after GaelClichy was adjudged to havehandled inside his own area.

It was hardly a vintageperformance but United was fullvalue for a fifth successive home

win which meant it also retainedits unbeaten Premier Leaguerecord this season ahead of a tripto champions Chelsea on

    Sunday.United manager Sir Alex

    Ferguson was delighted by Park'sdisplay.

"His record aga instArsenal is very good and he'sbeen in fantastic form, the lad," he

    told Sky Sports."Unfortunately we are

going to lose him after December26 for the Asia Cup, so we aregoing to miss him for seven

matches, which is disappointing."Ferguson, who praised

his "magnificent" back four, saidof United's overall position: "Ithink we are starting to get thereand our form is improving."

    Me a n wh i l e A r se n a lmanager Arsene Wenger tried todownplay the defeat.

"I don't think we failed todeliver; we lost a game and thatcan happen here," he said.

There was little to choosebetween the two teams in apredictably tightly-fought first halfin which chances were at a

    premium.Arsenal manager Arsene

Wenger was forced to start youngP o la n d ke e p e r Wo j c i e chSzczesny in his first league startas Lukasz Fabianski was not fit.

And Szczesny, half theage of United's 40-year-oldveteran Edwin van der Sar, had arelatively trouble free first-half.

    R o o n e y d i d s t i n gSzczesny's finger-tips from 22-

yards in the ninth minute, but it was the one of few saves theyoungster was called to make in atense and edgy game.

Arsenal, who started withskipper Cesc Fabregas on thesubstitutes bench, responded

    t h r o u g h M a r o u a n eChamakh but the striker's

header failed to troublevan der Sar.As the game wore

on, it became apparentthat one moment of qualitywould secure the points.

Just as Arsenalthought i t had doneenough to go in at theinterval on level terms,United broke the deadlockin the 41st minute through

Park. The mid f ie lder had

enough space in the box toproduce a improvised glancing

header past Szczesny aftergetting on the end of Nani'sdeflected cross.

Sensing victory, Unitedwent for the kill but Szczensyrescued the visitors after dashingoff his line to block Anderson'ssh o t fo l l o w in g Ro o n e y ' sintelligent 54th minute pass.

Then Nani fired wastefullyover the bar from a counterattackwith Rooney waiting unmarked inthe middle.

With the game slippingaway, Wenger sent on Fabregasand Robin van Persie. But thedouble substitution failed torescue Arsenal.

Indeed, United wouldhave won by a more handsomemargin had Rooney not blazed hispenalty high and wide after Clichywas adjudged to have handledwhilst on the ground.

Rooney was handed anopportunity five minutes from timeto atone for his error but wasdenied by Szczesny, who clawed
