KURUNJANG PRIMARY SCHOOL ~ “Learning Together” NEWSLETTER 39 - 2017 Thursday 7 th December, 2017 PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Last night, Tom Goddard, Adriana Velencei, Fiona Hayden and I attended the Kurunjang Secondary Instrumental Christmas concert. It is the fourth music concert held in 2017, and the second in which our students who learn an instrument in the instrumental program participated. Congratulations to Violet H, Kanwal T, Krystal Z, Erin D, Kobe D, Erica K, Emily R and Catelyn T who performed with the secondary students in the combined junior band. The children and their parents and carers have every reason to be very proud of their efforts and achievements. It was also wonderful to see many of the past KPS students who demonstrated their individual and collective musical talent. Next Thursday (14 th Dec) we will, as we have for the last 2 years, hold the F-2 concert on the basketball area adjacent to the gym, commencing at 6.00pm. This is not a small endeavour as it requires the use of every classroom seat in the school and having exhausted them will still mean standing room if our audience exceeds 500. To ensure that all are able to hear and see, we ask that children in the audience remain seated (there will be an area at the front of the stage) and supervised. Activity on the 3/4 playground, around the stage and performers or on the astro turf will not be permitted. We thank you in anticipation of assisting us with this. At the conclusion of the concert, it would be wonderful if there were any families who could assist staff in returning the chairs to the buildings. A reminder that the state wide orientation day for children transitioning to Foundation and from Year 6 to secondary school in 2018 , is next Tuesday 12 th December. Step up day will occur the following week on Wednesday 20 th December when all current students F-5 will have opportunity to meet with their 2018 class and if possible their teacher. Recruitment of staff has been undertaken in the last couple of weeks and currently 6 new staff have been appointed to Kurunjang Primary School in a fixed term capacity. At this time we have increased the number of classes for 2018 to 23, an increase of 2 from this year - an additional 3/4 class and 5/6 class. The population already for next year is predicted at 579 students. Please ensure that you have notified the office if you are moving or haven’t yet enrolled Foundation students. I am pleased to advise you that our school is participating in the Glasses for Kids program in 2018. This program is providing free vision screening, further eye testing and glasses if required, for all Foundation to Year 3 students in 250 of Victoria's government schools. It has a potential to reach more than 30,000 students and is being delivered as a partnership between State Schools’ Relief and its partner providers, with the support of the Department of Education and Training. All children, regardless of their background or circumstances, should have access to high-quality services and the supports they need to thrive and prosper. Children with uncorrected vision deficiencies can experience difficulty in learning, which can lead to behavioural challenges in the classroom. Identifying and addressing vision problems early ensures students don’t fall behind. Children with vision deficiencies often do not report symptoms, assuming that everyone sees the world in the same way as they do. PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Screening, testing, and the provision of glasses is backed by evidence as an effective means of supporting students and their families, by helping to improve learning behaviours and leading to better schooling outcomes. The Glasses for Kids program will give an individual vision screening to students at school. Children who require additional eye testing will be referred to an established optometry practice for further bulk billed testing. Glasses will be dispensed for free, if needed. The vision screening will be conducted at school by optometrists and final year optometry students from the University of Melbourne’s Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences. The scheduled date for screening at our school is Monday 12 th February 2018. Parental consent will be required for students to participate in the program. Participation is voluntary. An information sheet for parents which outlines key details about the program will be sent home with all Foundation to Year 3 students. 2018 Foundation students will receive the information sheet in their packs, on Orientation Day next Tuesday. 2018 Yr 1, 2 and 3 students will receive the information in the first week of school next year. A consent form and a brief eye health questionnaire will also be sent home and these should be returned to school, completed and signed, to enable participation in the program. Yesterday the staff invited all parents and friends of the school who volunteer their time in any capacity to the school, to attend a morning tea provided by the staff. We cannot emphasise enough, the valuable contribution that volunteers make to the productivity of the school and to the learning of our students through such things as serving on school council, hearing children read in the classroom or assisting with small group tasks and class events. We really appreciate and thank all parents who have made themselves available to volunteer their time and effort for supporting our students and school. We hope that as many of the parents who are available will attend at 11.00am tomorrow in the staffroom. We invite any parent/helper who would like to help in any way next year, to inform next year’s class teacher. We would love to have you at school. ~ Learning Together
