A-4 ACT THEATRE
Airey Neave:(1916 -1979 ): British soldier and Conservative politician, assassinated by car bomb near the House of Commons. The INLA claimed responsibility.
Bloody Sunday:one of the most famous and important events of the Troubles in Northern Ireland, commemorated by U2 in their song “Sunday Bloody Sunday.” During a Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association march on 30 January 1972 in Derry, members of the British Army shot 26 unarmed protesters and bystanders, killing 14. The British long maintained that protestors began the violence, though eyewitnesses insisted otherwise. The Saville inquiry in June of 2010 finally concluded in favor of the victims; subsequently Prime Minister David Cameron issued a formal apology on behalf of the British
Government.
Chasing skirt:chasing after girls (or female cats, in the case of Wee Thomas)
Drippy: annoyingly sentimental
Eejit: idiot
Feck/fecking:
used consistently as an Irish-dialect version of the word we all know…
Gasurs:young children, young boys
Gob: mouth
Guildford Four:a quartet of people wrongfully convicted in the 1970s for bombings at two pubs in Guildford, England (in reality committed by the IRA). Their convictions were later reversed.
The House of Elliott:
BBC television series broadcast during the 1990s.
IRA:
Provisional Irish Republican Army. Republican paramilitary organization whose aim is to remove Northern Ireland from the UK and create a United Republican Ireland by force and political persuasion. Categorized as a terrorist group under the UK’s Terrorism Act 2000, though it formally announced a weapons decommission
in 2005.
INLA:
Irish National Liberation Army, a republican socialist paramilitary group formed in 1974 after an ideology split in the IRA. Seeks to remove Northern Ireland from the UK and create a united, but socialist, Ireland. Smaller and more subject to internal feuds and splits than the larger IRA groups. Classified as a proscribed terrorist group in the UK and as an illegal organization in the Republic of Ireland, though in October 2009 it vowed to continue its aims through peaceful political means.
Mongo:
huge; “mongo” is short for humongous
Poteen:(“pocheen”): traditional Irish alcohol, distilled from grain or potatoes, and illegal for much of Ireland’s history. One of the most alcoholic drinks in the world, famous for its ability to re-intoxicate a drinker the morning after by drinking water and bringing the remaining ethanol back into solution.
Quisling:a traitor, especially one who collaborates with an occupying force.
A rake: a large amount of anything (as in “a rake of toenails”).
Sir Roger David Casement(1864-1916): Irish nationalist hero hanged by the British for his role in planning the Dublin Easter Rising. Widely thought to be the author of “The Black Diaries,”cataloguing his sexual adventures with very young boys.
Tadeen /biteen: just a little. The suffix “een” is used as a diminutive to all kinds of phrases and words.
Ulster:here used as slang for “Northern Ireland,” though not strictly accurately — only six of the nine counties in the Ulster region are actually part of Northern Ireland, the other three belong to the Republic of Ireland.

Out for blood? From ancient Greek tragedy to Elizabethan era revenge plays to contemporary villain-centric melodramas, it’s safe to say that live theatre audiences have more than just a passing flirtation with guts and gore—one might even go so far as to call it bloodlust.
