I would like to be able to grow in my knowledge of the Maasai culture, female genital mutilation, ingrained tradition, and human rights. I would like to be able to connect with the girls as a confidant, mentor, and friend. I would like to be able to serve the needs of the girls at the home with the greater understanding that I am there for only a year but have the opportunity to create a lasting impression. Most importantly, I would like that impression to be one that shows them the love and compassion of Jesus working through me. It is important to me that the girls are able to see God through me this coming year and I would like to ask for your support through prayer. This year is going to change me. Transcript of Kuleta Tumaini ~ June 2014

I would like to be able to grow in my knowledge of

the Maasai culture, female genital mutilation,

ingrained tradition, and human rights. I would like to

be able to connect with the girls as a confidant,

mentor, and friend. I would like to be able to serve the

needs of the girls at the home with the greater

understanding that I am there for only a year but have

the opportunity to create a lasting impression.

Most importantly, I would like that impression to be

one that shows them the love and compassion of Jesus

working through me. It is important to me that the

girls are able to see God through me this coming year

and I would like to ask for your support through

prayer. This year is going to change me. I can feel it

in my bones.

Finishing my Masters in International Social Work

has been a whirlwind of non-stop activity. I’ve had

little time to think about all of the possibilities

waiting for me in Kenya. I guess you could say

that it hasn’t quite hit yet that in six weeks I will

be on a plane heading for another country where I

will live for the next 10 months. In the past week

alone I have felt excited, anxious, hopeful,

prepared, distraught, eager, and completely out of

my league when thinking of what’s in store.

When I went to Tanzania three years ago for three

weeks, I left my heart there. I was taken aback by

the land, the people, the way the grass moves so

freely, the way the air sings of love, war,

bloodshed, and deep tradition. The place and the

people seemed to move to a steady drumbeat that

soothed the soul like a child’s lullaby. Going to

Kenya to The Olmalaika Home is an opportunity

for me to join in with that drumbeat and to reclaim

my heart again.

My hope for this coming year is that I will be able

to live out my personal mission statement to

“boldly pursue active positive change by

continually seeking to broaden my knowledge,

generate discussion, and initiate action with

integrity, dignity, and compassion.”

“To be without a friend is to be poor indeed”

With school back in session the home is quiet for most of the day. I am always amazed when I think of their daily routine. Here is a typical week day schedule:

4:30- 5:00am Morning worship 5:00-5:30am Clean room/get ready for school. 5:30-6:00am Breakfast 6:00-12:45pm School 12:45-2:00pm Lunch 2:00 -6:00pm 4th - 8th grade continue school 6:00 -7:00pm Dinner 7:00-9:00pm Study Hall/Classes at the school 9:15-9:45pm Evening worship 10pm Lights out

When I was there I put the littlest one to bed early and she was literally already asleep as I tucked her under the covers. She never even knew that I kissed her goodnight. On July 6th we have scheduled a very special day for all the girls and invited their families to come to the home to spend some time with them, see the home and enjoy a special meal.

We are hoping each of the girls has family come, but reality is that very few will show up. We have given each family plenty of prior notice so that they can all work it out one way or another.

Current Projects/Needs

Administration Annex ~ We are currently using two rooms in The Olmalaika Home for the office and supplies, plus a room for the interns to work in. If we can raise $60,000.00 we will be able to build an Administration Annex right next to the home which will free up the two bedrooms in the home for 16 more girls. We have had several girls who have needed to move in but we just have not had the space for them. The annex will provide a place for interns to stay, plus an official office, storage area for supplies, counseling and tutoring rooms, plus a kitchen and bathroom with indoor plumbing.

If you would like to cover the cost of an entire room in

memory of someone, we would be more than glad to put

a special plaque on the door with “naming rights.”

Bunk Beds ~ We have filled all the beds with little girls and still need 13 more bunks built as we have faith that the funds for the annex will come in and we will be able to use the rooms now being used for the office and interns. Each bunk cost $235 and that includes transporting them down to the home from Nairobi

Fence ~ Our property is on the campus of a new secondary school and they have given us permission to completely fence in the 2 acres It gives us a little more security and privacy. The funds needed to do that are $1,900

It is because of each of you that these girls are

safe and has the opportunity to go to school.

Thank you for making a difference ~

Letter from KimLetter from KimLetter from KimLetter from Kim

It’s June, and summer has finally arrived!

In just about a month I will be leaving for Kenya and my suitcases are already out and almost filled up. Our two daughters are home for the past week. -one has been in Austria for the past two years and the other just graduated from academy. I cannot believe how many clothes they have accumulated while away and so we have spent the last couple of days sorting through things that are too small or they just don’t want anymore and I already have almost a whole suitcase full of goodies for the girls in Kenya.

If you have a chance and are doing some late spring cleaning, The Olmalaika Home can always use brand new or gently used twin sheets, towels, mattress pads, girls’ clothing and more. If you go to our website there is a list of items we can use on a regular basis.

We will have a booth in the exhibit tent at the Michigan Seventh-day Adventist Camp Meeting in Cedar Lake, Michigan, June 13-21st and you are more than welcome to drop off donated items at it or just stop by to say hi.

I have been so blessed by the letters of encouragement and support I have gotten from so many of you! Your desire to be sponsors, support our projects both financially and in your prayers, plus provide care packages for the children and share our ministry with others has been such a blessing to me.. Please know you are each appreciated in so many ways.

Thank you for being passionate about serving others Thank you for being passionate about serving others Thank you for being passionate about serving others Thank you for being passionate about serving others ––––
