Have fun with it. Use a casual voice and be personable.

So how do you use it?

Fill out your profile fully.

+1 pages that you are interested in.

If you’re a content creator, connect your profile to your website user account. This will help Google associate your content with your page.

Participate in the Google community.

Participate in chats or hangouts.

”Twitter is the place where news breaks.

That means you should be tweeting your reporting as it develops while adhering to good verification practices.

The exception to this rule is if it’s a major investigative piece that is too complex to be released in tidbits without greater context.

Twitter Best Practices

Don’t do the robot. Be human.

Be a source of information, not just a linker. Don’t just tweet when you want to share a link.

Tweet what you’re working on, reading or interested in.

Whatever you do, make it blue.

Make your tweets standout with images. (horizontal ones)

Repeat tweets occasionally.

Tweet updates with the new information when a story develops.

Don’t be afraid to link to other’s content.

Set goals for what you want out of your social community and create content geared towards achieving that.

Do not use social media to bring people to your site. It helps but it’s not the point. We use social media to expand our audience and meet them where they are.

Social media isn’t just an extra thing we do after we’ve done the real work of reporting the story. It should be ingrained in each part of the process of a story or project.

You can’t create high quality, engaging, community-building content “the easy way” or the quick way.
