WHAT IS A GASKET?A gasket is a material or combination of materials essentially designed for inclusion between twostationary members of a flange joint. The primary function of any gasket is to seal effectively, forpreventing leakage of the media into the atmosphere.

The gasket material selected must be capable of sealing mating surfaces, resistant to the mediumbeing sealed, and able to withstand the application temperatures and pressures.

GASKET SELECTIONGaskets can be clearly defined into three main categories, non-metallic, semi-metallic and metallictypes. The mechanical characteristics and performance of a gasket will vary extensively, dependingupon the type of gasket selected and the materials, from which it is manufactured.Obviously, mechanical properties are an important factor when considering gasket design, but theprimary selection of a gasket type is influenced by the following factors;

■Temperature of the media to be contained.■Pressure of the media to be contained.■Corrosive nature of the application.

NON- METALLICUsually composite sheet materials for low pressure class applications. They are suitable for a wide range of general and corrosive chemicalservices and are supplied in both non-asbestos and asbestos materials.

Types : Elastomers, Compressed Asbestos Fiber (CAF) Sheets, Non-asbestos Fiber Sheets, PTFE gaskets, Insulating Gaskets, GraphiteSheet Products.

SEMI-METALLICA composite gasket consists of both non-metallic and metallicmaterials. The metal generally provides the strength and resilience ofthe gasket. These gaskets are suitable for both low and hightemperature/pressure applications. A wide range of materials areavailable.Type : Metal Jacketed Gaskets, Spiral Wound Gaskets.

METALLICIt can be fabricated from one metal or a combination of metallicmaterials, in a variety of shapes and sizes depending on hightemperature/pressure applications.

High loads are required to seat metallic gaskets, relying on thedeformation of the material into the flange imperfections.

Type : Ring Type Joints, Lens Rings, Delta Rings, Bridgeman Rings,Serrated Gaskets, Corrugated Gaskets.

Service Conditions

Remarks(1) Maximum service temperature and pressure are not guaranteed values. Non-metallic gasket can not

be used simultaneously at both maximum temperature and maximum pressure.(2) : according to material specification.

GASKET INSTALLATION PROCEDUREIt is important that all bolted joints be tighted uniformly and in a diametrically staggeredpattern, as illustrated in below figure, except for special high pressure closures when theinstructions of the manufacturer should be followed.

- Center the gasket on the flange. This is extermely vital where raised faces are involved.Note : Standard ANSI ring gaskets, when properly cut, Should center themselves when thebolts are in place.

- Use a torque wrench and well-lubricated fasteners with hardened flat washers to ensurecorrect initial loading.

- Tighten bolts to compress gasket uniformly. This means going from side to side around thejoint in a star-like crossing pattern.

- All bolts should be tightened in one-third increments, according to proper bolting patterns.

- Retorque 12 to 24 hours after start-up, whenever possible. All applicable safety standardsincluding lockout/tagout procedure should be observed.

- Never use liquid or metallic based anti-stick or lubricating compounds on the gaskets.Premature failure could occur as a result.

BEFORE INSTALLATION- Remove old gasket and clean flange surface of all debris. For best result, use a metal flangescraper and aerosol gasket remover and a wire brush, then inspect the flange for damage. Be sure surface finish and flatness are satisfactory.

- Composition gaskets(non-asbestos,asbestos) become dried out and brittle so that they donot always provided an effective seal when reused.

- Bolted joints and flanges are designed for use with the particular type of gasket specified.Substitution of a gasket of different construction or improper dimensions may be result inleakage and damage to gasket surfaces.

- Metal or metal jacketed gaskets, when compressed initially, flow to match their contactsurfaces. In so doing they are work hardened and if reused, may provided an imprefect sealor result in deformation and damage to the gasket contact surfaces of the equipment.

- When metal jacketed type gaskets are used with a tongue groove joint without nubbin. The gasket should be installed so that the tongue bears on the seamless side of the gasketjacket. When nubbin is used, the nubbin should bear on the seamless side.

Spiral Wound Gasket (Semi-metallic)

Spiral wound gaskets are to be constructed as alternate plies of preformed metal

windings(hoof) and plain fillers that are spirally wound when compressed between two

flanges. A "v" and "w" shaped crown centered in the metal strip acts as a spring, giving

gaskets greater resilience under varying conditions. Filler and strip (hoof) materials can be

changed to accommodate different chemical compatibility requirements. If the load available

to compress a gasket is limited, gasket construction and dimensions can be altered to

provide an effective seal.

A spiral wound gasket may include a centering ring, an inner ring or both. The outer

centering ring enters the gasket within the flange and acts as a compression limiter, while the

inner ring provides additional radial strength. The inner ring also reduces flange erosion and

protects the sealing element.

Resilience and strength make spiral wound gaskets an ideal choice under a variety of

conditions and applications. Widely used in refineries and chemical processing plants, spiral

wound gasket are also effective for power generation, aerospace, and a variety of valve and

special applications.

The spiral wound gasket industry is looking for change in the specification covering spiral

wound gasket. Previously, it was API 601, the new specification is ASME B16.20. Although

these specifications are very similar, KST is making the change necessary for ASME B16.20.

As environmental regulations and industry requirements become increasingly stringent,

new and custom applications are continuing to evolve. Wherever you need a strong, resilient

seal, our spiral wound gaskets provide an effective solution.

TYPE OF SPIRAL WOUND GASKET BASIC TYPEBasic construction type, inner and outer diameters are reinforcedwith several piles of metal without filler to give greater stabilityand better compression characteristics.- Suitable for tongue and groove, male and female or grooved to

flat face flange assemblies.

INNER RING TYPESolid inner metal ring acts as a compression stopper. To prevent accumulation of solids, reduce turbulent flow ofprocess fluids and minimize erosion, damages of gasket betweenflange bore and the inside diameter, the annular space is filledup by solid inner metal ring. - Suitable for male and female pipe flanges.

CENTERING RING TYPESolid centering ring accurately locates the gasket on the flangeface to give the additional radial strength to prevent the gasketblowout and acts as a compression limiter. In case of installingthe centering ring, it is very easy to install the gasket to flangeface because the end of centering ring will touch at bolts- Suitable for use with flat face and raised face flanges.

For class 900 and above an internal ring is recommended.

INNER RING and CENTERING RING TYPEA inner ring and centering ring type gasket will give anadditional compression limiting stopper for gasket inner andouter side. It will prevent the corrosions on flange face atannular space.- Suitable for use with flat face and raised face flanges and

specified for high pressure / temperature service - Class 900 and above or where corrosive or toxic media are

present.

LSS (Low Seating Stress) TYPEThe type LSS spiral wound gasket type has been engineered byKST to provide an alternative to sheet gaskets in Class 150 andClass 300 service. In case of required low load for seating, TypeLSS gaskets can give the solutions for inherent strength, resiliency and blowout resistance of spiral wound gaskets. Theyare manufactured with high purity flexible graphite filler orPTFE filler for optimum seating.- Suitable for the full range of standard class 150 and class 300

flanges, as well as other non-standard low pressure flanges.

GENERAL NOTES :

(a) This table shows the maximum bore of flanges for which the spiral-wound gasket dimensions shown in Page22~23 are recommended, considering the tolerances involved, possible eccentric installation, and the possibility that the gasket may extend into the assembled flange bore.

(b) Abbreviations : SO = slip on and threaded WN = welding neck SW = standard wall

NOTES :

(1) Inner rings are required for Class 900 gaskets, NPS 24; Class 1500 gaskets, NPS 12 through NPS 24; and Class2500 gaskets, NPS 4 through NPS 12.

(2) In these sizes the gasket is suitable for a welding neck flange with a standard wall bore, if the gasket and theflanges are assembled concentrically. This also applies to a nozzle. It is the user's responsibility to determine if the gasket is satisfactory for a flange of any larger bore.

(3) Gaskets in these sizes are suitable for slip-on flanges only if the gaskets and flanges are assembled concentrically.

(4) A nozzle is a long welding neck, the bore equals the flange NPS.

(5) An NPS 24 gasket is suitable for nozzles.

Recommendable the width of inner ring and inside diameter of gasket

The width of spiral wound gasket, when it iscompressed, tends to expand and a space for theexpansion is to be taken into account in design offlanges or joints.

(1) Flat or raised face is widely employed for pipeflanges and machinery joints as a gasket seatingface. Spiral wound gasket with centering ring orwith centering/inner rings is normally used onsuch flanges or joints. The following space is idealfor the gasket and it is desired to be taken into account when design new machinery andequipments.

(2) Tongue-and-groove or male-and-female flange issometimes employed in pressure vessels and valvebonnets. Basic type spiral wound gasket (without ring) is normally used for the former case and spiral wound gasket with inner ring for the lattercase. It is desired to have the following clearancefor the mentioned gaskets.

The Value of W’ is normally regarded as the width ofgasket sealing element. The gasket contact area W°can be obtained in the following way.

★ in case of nominal gasket thickness 6.4 mmW° = W’ - 2.0mm

★ in case of nominal gasket thickness 4.5 mmW° = W’ - 1.5mm

★ in case of nominal gasket thickness 3.2 mmW° = W’ - 1.0mm

The depth(f4) of tongue-and-groove or male-and-female flange must be more than 5 mm if nominalgasket thickness is 4.5mm.

Inner rings shall be furnished with all spiral-wound gaskets having PTFE(polytetra-fluoroetylene) filler

material. It is recommended that inner rings be specified by the user for flexible graphite and other filler

materials (if appropriate for flanges and bore sizes used), particularly where experience has demonstrated

inward bucking of the gaskets to be a problem. Inner rings shall be furnished in spiral-wound gaskets for

flanges NPS 24 and larger in Class 900, NPS 12 and larger in Class 1500, and NPS 4 and Larger in Class

2500, Gaskets with inner rings should be used only with socket welding, lapped, welding neck, and

Spiral Wound Gaskets based on gasket standard ofASME B 16.20a-2000 for ASME/ANSI B16.47 Series A( OF API 601- 1988 for MSS SP-44 Flanges )( OF JPI-7S-41-1998 for JPI-7S-15 Series A Flanges )

GENERAL NOTES : This table shows the maximum bore of flanges for which the spiral-wound gasket dimensions shown in belowTable are recommended, considering the tolerances involved, the possibility of eccentric installation, and thepossibility that the gasket may extend into the assembled flange bore.

NOTES :(1) Inner rings are required for all PTFE gaskets and Class 900 NPS 26 through NPS 48. (2) Applies only to welding neck flanges with a bore not larger than the inside diameter of a 0.187-in wall pipe.

Larger bores must be checked individually.(3) Applies only to welding neck flanges with a bore not larger than the inside diameter of a 0.25-in. wall pipe,

except that NPS 38, Class 300, is not suitable for a bore larger than the inside diameter of a 0.30-in.wall pipe. Larger bores must be checked individually.

(4) There are no Class 900 flanges in NPS 50 through 60.

1) For limitations on the maximum flange bore for use with these spiral-wound gaskets.

2) Inner rings shall be furnished with all spiral-wound gaskets having PTFE(polytetra-fluoroetylene) filler

material. It is recommended that inner rings be specified by the user for flexible graphite and other filler

materials (if appropriate for flanges and bore sizes used), particularly where experience has demonstrated

inward bucking of the gaskets to be a problem.

TYPE OF METALLIC GASKET RING JOINT GASKETSolid-metal gaskets with oval and octagonal cross sectionsprovide the pressure-proof joints for high-pressure and hightemperature lines. Ring joint gaskets are identified by R, RX, orBX number that relates to flange size, pressure class, theappropriate flange standard. Irregular type ring joint gaskets such as Bridgeman ring, deltaring, double cone ring, round ring are also available with regardto customer's request. - Up to Class 20,000 psi , oil field on dirlling, petroleum equipment.

CORRUGATED GASKETIn order to give better surface contact, in which the spring effectof metal is present, the metal corrugated gasket is used in lowpressure applications that require a thin line contact because ofspace or weight limitations or where available bolt loads are low.The corrugated metal gaskets are excellent sealing effects in gas.- These are widely used in class 150 and 300 valve caps and pipe

flanges.

SERRATED GASKETSerrated gasket are manufactured using a metallic base ringmachined which concentric grooves at an appropriate angle anddepth, then covered with a soft sealing element. and give theadvantages of reducing the bolt load required to effect a seal. - These gaskets are used for high pressure/temperature steam,

gas line.

FLAT METAL GASKETThe flat surface metal gasket of simple type provides pressure-proof joints for high pressure and temperature lines. The flat metal gaskets require more bolt loads than thecorrugated and serrated gasket. - These gaskets are used for high pressure/temperature steam,

gas line, valve caps and pipe flanges, heat exchangers.

JACKETED METAL GASKETS (Semi-Metallic)The internal part of gasket is composed of an non-asbestos orglass wool or graphite millboard and the outside is jacketed bythe various thin metallic material.Various available shape are such as round, oval, non-circular, etc.- Up to Class 900, steam, water, hot water, hydrocarbon,

cryogenic line, low temperature gas, LPG

METALLIC O-RINGThe metallic O-Ring Seals are used when elastomers and othernon-metallic seals will not seal properly or do not offer therequired reliability for the application, usually as a result oftemperatures, pressures, or the environment. Metallic O-RingSeals are long lasting seals and unlike non-metallic seals, theyare not subject to failure due to incompatibility with theenvironment, out gassing or from deterioration due to age.Metallic O-Ring Seals are generally fabricated from tubingconsisting of stainless steel or high temperature alloys such asInconel. These materials are frequently used because they offerresilient properties that enable the seal to "Spring-Back".

APPLICATIONSTWe welcome the opportunity to design a seal to fit your application. Whether you aresealing gases or liquid -250 °C or 1000 °C, vacuum to 2000Kg/cm2. Aerospace, Nuclear ,Chemical/Plastics, Vacuum Processing/Research

SHAPED SEALSMetallic O-Ring Seals can be produced in various shapes. The availability of shaped O-Ringpermits the design engineer to select the shapes. However, we recommend contacting ourTechnical Service staff for design assistance of seal and groove.

METALLIC SERRATED GASKET

SERRATED GASKETSerrated gasket is composed of various metal andthickness plates, which are in serrated form on bothfaces just as numerous concentric circle. It is usedwhen bolting force is not sufficient to seal a flat gasketbecause the peak points of serrated parts contacteffectively on the flange surfaces. It is commonly usedon valve bonnet and flanges attached to equipment. 3types of cross section are available. The angle betweenthe mountains can be used in either 60° or 90°. But thebelow tables are based on 90° angle.

PTFE( Poly Tetra Fluoro Ethlene) SOLID SHEETS & GASKETSTEFLON is the brand name of fluoro carbon resins, registered byUS DUPONT. It has unique physical and chemical propertiesdifferent from other high molecular compounds as crystal resin.PTFE is chemically inert and give a superior chemical resistanceproperty. PTFE is widely used in high corrosive chemical andlow temperature services for gasket and packing.PTFE solid sheet easily manufacture the required dimensionsand shapes.

RUBBER SHEET GASKET & O-RINGRubber sheet gasket are used in gasket of pipe flange, jointmaterial in low pressure warm water, sea water, dilute alkali, cold water, air gas temperature lower than 80 ~ 250°C There are many kinds of rubbers and the operating range is alsodifferent for each. Before use the rubber gasket, Please check theavailable operating range.

NON-ASBESTOS (ASBESTOS) COMPRESSED JOINTSHEETS & GASKETSThe use of Asbestos have restricted because of health problems. In order to replace the asbestos sheet, Many makers in the worldhave manufacturing the non-asbestos joint sheet to replace theasbestos sheets. The non-asbestos compressed joint sheet gasket providessuperior heat resistance and excellent sealing in low pressureservices. So, It is widely used in industry and chemical lines. The available pressure range and temperature is different foreach products and makers. But available pressure is up to 30kg/cm2 and temperature rangeis max.300°C.If client want to use the special maker sheets, KST can supplythe nominated goods.

RUBBER GASKETConsisting of base polymers with the insertion of vulcanizing agents, fillers, pigments andvarious additives, Rubber gaskets offer effective, low seating stress seals typically for lowtemperature, low pressure applications.Rubber gaskets have relatively soft compression characteristics requiring relatively lowloads for an effective a seal, incorporated with excellent recovery properties due to their selfenergizing behaviour.

Natural Rubber (NR)Natural rubber exhibits exceptional elongation, excellent tear strength ,good wear resistanceand recovery properties. it exhibits goods resistance to most inorganic salts, ammonia, mildacids and alkalies, Natural rubber does not offer good resistance to oils and solvents and isnot recommended where exposure to ozone, oxygen or sunlight is prominent.

Nitrile Rubber (NBR)Nitrile is a synthetic rubber offering improved chemical resistance and temperaturecapabilities compared to neporene. The material offers good resistance to oils and solvents, aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons, petroleum oils and gasolines, animal fats and lacquersolvents. It offers poor resistance to strong oxidizing agents, chlorinated hydrocarbons, esters.

Styrene butadiene Rubber (SBR)SBR synthetic rubber offers excellent abrasion resistance and is suitable for use with weakorganic acids and moderate chemicals. It is unsuitable for use with ozone, strong acids andmost hydrocarbons.

Chloroprene (Neoprene) Rubber (CR)Neoprene offers excellent oil resistance, low permeability to gases and resistance to ozone, weathering and abrasion, The material is suitable for moderate acids, alkalies, salt solutions, petroleum, solvents and commercial oils and fuels. It is considered unsuitable for use withstrong acids, fats, greases and most hydrocarbons.

Ethylene Propylene Diene (EPDM)EPMD offers good resistance to ozone, heat, steam, strong acids and alkalies. It is not suitablefor use in oils, solvents and aromatic hydrocarbons.

Butyle Rubber (IIR)Butyle, also known as isobutylene or isopene, is an elastomer offering excellent resistance towear, teat and general abrasion as well as good ozone and gas permeatation resistance,Suitable for mild acid and alkali service and esters, butyl offers little resistance tocommercial oils and fuels.

Silicone Rubber (VMQ)The silicone range of rubbers offer excellent high and low temperature properties, They arealso unaffected by sunlight and ozone, They are unsuitable for use against steam and manyhydrocarbons.

Vition (FKM)VITON(Fluorinated Hydrocarbon) offers excellent resistance to acid, aliphatic hydrocarbons, oils, gasoline and many corrosive industrial applications. This material offers excellentresistance to temperature, weathering and gas permeability. it is not suitable for use againstamines, esters, ketones steam or low temperature service.

PTFE GASKETWhere extreme resistance is required to seal against toxic and highly corrosive media, PTFEis used almost totally chemically insert. it is only attacked by molted alkali metals andcertain fluorine compounds at elevated temperatures. However, the use of virgin PTFE sheetas a sealing material is limited, since the material suffers extensively from creep and coldflow when subjected to compressive loadings, even at ambient temperature. This can result in excessive stress on the gasket surface and subsequent leakage. In order to overcome sealing problems associated with virgin PTFE, a range of PTFEcomposites are available with enhanced creep and cold flow resistance.

Design Tips For Non-Metallic Gasket

Problem Result Suggested Solutions

Bolt holes close to edge

Very small bolt holes ornon-circular openings

Thin walls, delicate cross-sectionin relation to overall size

Metalworking tolerances appliedto gasket thickness, diameters,

length, width, etc.

Transference of fillets, radii, etc.from mating metal parts to gasket

Large gaskets made in sectionswith beveled joints

Tear-away parts with open slotsat attached edges

Causes breakage in strippingand assembling

Require handpicking...easy to miss

High scrap loss; stretching ordistortion in shipment or use.Restricts choice to high tensile

strength materials

Results in perfectly usableparts being rejected at incom-ing inspection. Requires timeand correspondence to reachagreement on practical limits.

Increases cost of parts andtooling. Delays delivery.

Unless part is molded, suchfeatures mean extra operations

and higher cost

Extra operations to skive orglue. Difficult to obtain smooth,

even joints without steps ortransverse grooves.

Slots require handpicking, costly dies and die

maintenance

Profection or "ear"

Notch instead of hole

Avoid hole sizes under 3/32"diameter. If small hole is for

locating or indexing, change tonotch.

Have the gasket in mind duringearly design stages

Most gasket materials are compressible. Many are affected

by humidity changes.Try standard or commercial

tolerances before concluding thatspecial accuracy is required.

Most gasket stocks will conformto mating parts without pre-

shaping. Be sure radii, chamfers, etc., are functional, not merelycopied from metal members.

Die-cut dovetailed joint

Simple perforation

ASBESTOS, NON-ASBESTOS COMPRESSED JOINT SHEET GASKETThe use of Asbestos have restricted because of health problems. In order to replace theAsbestos sheet, Many makers in the world have manufacturing the non-asbestos joint sheetto replace the asbestos sheets. The non-asbestos sheet gasket provides superior heatresistance and excellent sealing in low pressure services. So, It is widely used in industryand chemical lines. The available pressure range and temperature is different for each products and makers. Butavailable mean pressure is up to 30kg/cm2 and temperature range is max.300。C in case ofstyle no. 5102. If client want to use the special maker sheets, KST can supply the nominatedgoods.
