What we call IFC is actually ISO 16739:2013
For this topic it represents the International Standards OrganizationFounded in 1946 with 25 countries met at the Institute of Civil
Engineers in London With information at www.iso.org where you will see their motto,

res ISO is from the greek isos meaning equal
As engineers we think of ISO as a prefix meaning‘chiefly of hydrocarbons’ or the internet slang ‘in search of’.

BIM is widely used in commercial & vertical sectors to manage projects from conception through design, fabrication, construction and future maintenance. Some are using BIM but it is limited by a lack of standardization.
o Identityo Governance & Stewardship Framework o Data Exchange Schemao Funding Mechanism for Support
To use BIM a strategic plan is needed. T-19 initiated a study funded by NCHRP. Project 20-07 Task 377 is titled “Standardized Format for Bridge and Structure Information Models” and it presents a roadmap with the following actionable items.

Establish standards, guidelines, or manuals for bridge project stakeholders to facilitate thewide use of IFC as an exchange standard in BIM for Bridges and Structures in bridge projects. This would include recommending or mandating the use of common modeling format andIFC submittal.
Develop the national standard MVD, data definitions, and data requirements for themodel life cycle. The selected model will be overseen by T-19 with collaboration withAASHTO Technical Joint Committee on Electronic Standards, FHWA, and various stakeholders.
Provide timely update of IFC data dictionary for common bridge elements.
Vendors to offer suitable training covering BIM for Bridges and Structures model development, management, and usage.
Conduct ROI analysis to quantify the benefits of using BIM.
Organize Workshops & facilitate pilot/demonstration project.

Identity: BIM for Bridges and Structures
Data Exchange Schema: The OpenBridge model would give more control on governance but the decision is to develop MVDs compliant with the IFC Standard. Building Smart International, the global organization with IFC oversight, has initiatives working toward BIM for bridges in other countries. Aligning with IFC is appropriate.
Governance & Stewardship: Listed in Roadmap. Overseen by T-19 in collaboration with FHWA, AASHTO Technical Joint Committee on Electronic Standards, etc.
Funding Mechanism: A consultant/contractor will be required, funded by Pooled Fund/FHWA

OpenBridge Modeler uses 3d Civil data from OpenRoads as input. Changes to geometry can be automatically updated in the structure. Cross sections for detailing may require Pro-Structures software.2D views with dimensioning using Dynamic ViewsProvides clash detection and clearances.Integrates with ProjectWiseTablet access with Navigator Mobile.

orIFC
Issues:• Approval of new IFC entities• Electronic signature or stamp• Official testing tools
4-Step Strategic Plan Phase 3 – Implement
Phase 3: Implement
Implement formats and certify software
Tasks:
• Implement the format on software
applications by software vendors
• Certify the software applications by the
owner/maintainer of the formats.
Issues:
• Implementer Support Group (ISG) and Model
Support Group (MSG) for IFC
• Guides, manuals, and ‘go-to’ people
4-Step Strategic Plan Phase 4 – Deploy
Phase 4: Deploy
Deploy certified software in bridge projects
Tasks:
• Deploy the certified software applications
• Modify the bridge project workflow to
accommodate the software applications
Issues:
• Generic or product specific BrIM guides
• How to promote BrIM: methods and
channels
Conclusion
• Short Term• Integration of 3D CAD to facilitate quantities• Specific information standardized for electronic sharing
(camber diagrams, bridge geometry from Engineer to Detailer)
• Longer Term• National data base for bridge definitions• Information delivery manuals created for life cycle
bridge work flow exchanges• Increased assets management capability
