A student perspective – Jack, Year 12 (Joined UTC in Year 10) My name is Jack and I started at the UTC in 2017 in year 10. I decided to join the UTC because my education wasn’t going so
well at my old school and I saw the UTC as an opportunity, so I just grabbed it. I am now in year 12 soon to be year 13 and am
the President of the Student Leadership Team which is a group of year 10 and 12 students who work with Mr McDaid to make
the UTC a better place and to improve the school as whole.
Since joining I have had a lot of employer interactions from companies such as:
• Bentley
• AO Logistics
• Network Rail
• James Walker
• OSL
• Air Products
And that is just the tip of the iceberg. I have also done:
• Crewe Heritage volunteering
• An MMU Engineering Department tour
• Chester University workshops
• AO carbon emissions project
These are just a few activities that I have had with employers since joining the UTC. Employer interactions are very important
and is what makes the UTC such a good place because it prepares you for the working world and every interaction you have
with an employer is something that can go on your CV. We have had Bentley come in before to review and give feedback on
our course work which is brilliant experience as it gives us an idea of how Bentley do things and what standard they want their
work to be set at.
Throughout the past few months students have not been able to go to the UTC in person but that hasn’t stopped them from
making sure students are still exceeding beyond their ability. Timetabled lessons have remained the same and the amount of
support we have all had from the teachers is outstanding. The employer interactions haven’t stopped either as every week
students have the option to join in on the weekly challenge that is organised by Mr McDaid and our employer partners. These
challenges so far have consisted of quizzes or engineering designing and prizes are given out the winners of the challenges.
Life at the UTC is beyond what I could have ever expected it to be like and has fully prepared me for my future career.

PROCEDURES AT THE UTC
MAKING CONTACT
Regular and easy communication between home and
the UTC is a vital requirement to support the progress
of your son or daughter. We welcome opportunities for
parents to come into the UTC or to speak to our staff
over the phone. If you wish to sit down with a specific
member of staff you can arrange an appointment
through reception.
All communication should initially go through the main
reception. Reception can be contacted via:
01270 218150
You can also contact Mr Graham directly:
Vice Principal KS4: [email protected]
REPORTING A MEDICAL
APPOINTMENT Parents/carers are asked to make medical
appointments outside school hours. However if making
an appointment during school hours can’t be avoided,
you must bring evidence of the appointment to
reception in advance. We ask parents/carers to pick up
their son/daughter for the appointment from reception.
We must have verbal or written permission from the
parent/carer to allow a student to leave
unaccompanied.
UNIFORM
Students are expected to adhere to the uniform
stipulations the UTC has set out. Guidelines about
uniform can be found on page 10. If a student does not
follow the uniform requirements and there is not a
reason which the UTC deems adequate, the student will
be dealt with accordingly, which will require making
contact with a parent/carer.
REPORTING AN ABSENCE
It is imperative that students do not take any time off school. Holidays are not permitted in term time. Students wishing to observe official religious holidays should request leave.
Should your child become ill and be unable to attend school, you must notify main reception on 01270 218150 every day the student is absent. If you do not notify the school, you will receive a truancy call until you make contact with us and it will be recorded as an unauthorised absence.
An authorised absence may be granted for an emergency or for a bereavement. A parent/carer must provide a written note to explain the circumstances of the absence and the UTC will determine whether it will be authorised.
If your son/daughter is going to be absent for any other
reason, you must complete a request for absence form
in advance. Forms can be collected from reception or
emailed on request. The UTC will make contact to
inform you whether your request has been authorised.
REPORTING A LATE ARRIVAL We understand a student on occasion may be late due
to unforeseen circumstances. If you’re aware your
son/daughter is going to be late, please contact the
school as soon as possible so we can update our
registers. If a student is late with no contact from a
parent/carer, the UTC will make contact.
GOING OFFSITE
Year 10 and 11 students are not allowed offsite at any
point during the day, unless it is an authorised activity.
We will seek parental consent prior to the activity.
At the UTC we use a cashless catering system, which allows students to place money on their account online through parent pay or by coin or cash on the machine. There is a machine available in each building for students to top up their money. If your child is eligible for Free School Meals, can you please inform the UTC before they start in September. If you were not previously eligible but your circumstances have changed, you will need to apply via the Cheshire East website: www.cheshireeast.gov.uk/schools/free_school_mea

PARKING
The UTC has 80 car parking spaces for staff, students
and visitors to the UTC. This parking includes
disabled parking and a drop off point. Please be
aware when signing in at reception you will need to
supply your car registration if parked in the UTC car
park.
TRAVEL Advice and information on how to get to the UTC can be found in the Travel Cheshire Guide available from reception. You can also plan your journey by going to www.travelcheshire.co.uk, where you can get an in‐depth guide using your preferred mode of transport.
DRESS CODE
Crewe Engineering & Design UTC students are required to wear a full uniform, which signifies their specific year
group. The uniform policy is based on the following principles:
o Promotes a sense of pride in the UTC in line with our ethos, values and beliefs
o Engenders a sense of community and belonging towards the UTC
o Supports positive behaviour and discipline
o Is practical, smart and business like
o Identifies students with the UTC
o Prevents students from coming to school in fashion or ‘designer’ label clothes that could be distracting in
lessons or create a sense of competition
o Makes students feel equal to their peers in terms of appearance and helps nurture cohesion between
different groups of students
o Is regarded as suitable for our UTC and good value for money by parents
o Is designed with health and safety and safeguarding in mind
The dress code requirements will apply at all times on‐site and for all off‐site activities unless otherwise instructed. The main exceptions will be as follows:
o For certain technical and engineering activities, wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) will be
required
o For physical education the clothing requirements will be determined by the nature of the activity. This will
be made clear well before the activity takes place
o If a student brings their own outdoor coat it cannot be worn within the building, however the UTC jacket
is acceptable as it is part of the school uniform
o Students are not permitted to wear trainers unless it is for a physical activity
We ask all parents/carers who send their children to Crewe Engineering & Design UTC to support our dress policy. If any parent or carer would like the UTC to modify the dress policy they should make representations in the
first instance to the Principal. The UTC welcomes children from all backgrounds and faiths. If there are serious
reasons, e.g. on religious grounds, why parents/carers want their child to wear clothes that differ from the
officially‐approved business dress, the UTC will look at such requests sympathetically. In addition, if you are
having financial difficulty purchasing an item of uniform, please contact the UTC.
Shoes must be formal and not trainers
Items marked with * are Crewe UTC specific and can only be purchased through the school uniform supplier;
www.swidtp.co.uk .
Plain black scarves and gloves are permitted during cold weather
There is a link to the UTC uniform provider on our school website. However, this is something which we can complete
further down the line because;
the process is very straightforward and the order is a tie, jumper and UTC jacket the uniform ordered is delivered to school within a couple of days we will be allowing orders right through to school starting and into early September. we hope to have you into school before the summer and you can try uniform on to gauge correct sizes they grow so much during the summer
KEY STAGE 4 UNIFORM
PERSONAL APPEARANCE
Personal adornment of all descriptions should be kept to a minimum to reflect the professional, business‐like ethos of the UTC:
o Hair should be neat and tidy and should be appropriately styled as for a professional workplace
o No excessive make‐up to be worn. Professional looking nails/nail varnish is permitted, however acrylic
false nails are not allowed due to health and safety reasons
o Only one pair of small stud size earrings may be worn in the ears and one stud in the nose, taking into
account health and safety requirements
o No other jewellery should be worn and no body piercings (for example eyebrow piercing) or tattoos
should be visible, with the exception of religious requirements.
EQUIPMENT
Bags: All students will be expected to bring books, equipment, or PE gear in a suitable waterproof bag. It is recommended that these should be of a size that can fit into our lockers. Coats and bags must not display text/images that could be considered offensive by others. Mobile phones, laptops and other electronic devices or high value items, are to be brought to the UTC at students’ own risk. The UTC will accept no responsibility for loss or damage to such equipment. Students are expected to be equipped with the necessary equipment for working as a young professional at the UTC. Students’ writing/technical drawing equipment should be kept inside a pencil case. All students should also have a scientific calculator. The minimum requirements within your child’s pencil case are:
o Pens (Black, Blue, Red and Green)
o Pencil Case
o Black Fine Line Pen
o Pencils (HB, 2H)
o Eraser
o 30cm Ruler
o Pencil Sharpener
o Protractor and Set Square
o Highlighter
The Senior Leadership Team will take the final decision regarding the suitability of clothing and appearance. In serious cases where, in the opinion of the Principal, a student’s appearance is unacceptable, the student may be withdrawn from lessons or required to return home to change. If a student is required to return home, the parent will be informed of the situation prior to the student leaving the site.
STANDARDS AND EXPECTATIONS
At Crewe Engineering and Design UTC we have high expectations of our students as they work towards a career in the industry, and we model our standards of those of our partners such as Bentley Motors, Network Rail, Siemens and Air Products. Mobile Phones We acknowledge the importance of mobile phones to student’s travel and therefore we have in place a trust relationship. Students may bring mobile phones into school and use them only during break and lunch times. However, they must be turned off and put away for lessons and lesson change overs. If a student doesn’t adhere to these rules, the mobile will be confiscated and only returned to a parent/carer at their earliest convenience. Smoking Crewe UTC has a zero tolerance for smoking and the use of smoking equipment, which includes vaping, within the school grounds or school proximity. As a school we must present a professional view at all times and must respect the school grounds.
