SENTIENCE ‘11 – Robotic Competition by ACROM

ACROM, the Amrita Club for Robotics and Mechatronics, held its

maiden robotic competition-Sentience’11 from 5th March to 6th March. The events

judged the strength of the logic and the design of the robots against obstacles

such as sand traps, ramps and of course, robots from the opposing teams. The

event was inaugurated by our correspondent Br. Dhanraj Swamiji, by flagging off

the first event “Robothon”. “Robothon” was a robotic obstacle race that tested the

navigation on the track with obstacles placed at random. The first round required

the robot to navigate across bends and ramps placed at random intervals on the

track.

Day two witnessed “Battlebots”, a robot competition of “sumo”

proportions. The qualification round required the participants to push a black box

out of the ring; whereas, the second round had the robots furiously pushing the

competitors out of the ring. After furious struggles the team PUMA won the first

place.

Sentience’11, under the patronage and support of its mentor Dr.

T.S.B. Sudarshan, was a huge success. The event was attended by the Associate

Dean, Dr. Rakesh S.G.; mentors Dr. T.S.B. Sudarshan and Dr. S.R. Nagaraja, Chair of

student’s activities; Dr. Shikha Tripathi and various faculty members.

National Symposium on ‘Shock Waves’

The Department of Mechanical Engineering conducted the First

National Symposium on ‘Shock Waves’ on 15th March 2011 in association with

Society for Shock Wave Research (India), Department of Aerospace Engineering,

IISc, Bengaluru. Over 110 delegates participated from IISc, ASE Bengaluru, DRDL

Hyderabad and other Institutions.

The symposium commenced with a formal inauguration function

where the dignitaries lit the lamp. All the members present, observed a minute of

silence as a mark of homage to the deceased of the Tsunami and earthquake in

Japan. Dr. Rakesh S.G., the Associate Dean welcomed the gathering and

introduced the dignitaries to the audience. The key note address was delivered by

Dr. Satish Kumar, Director, TBRL, Chandigarh on “Shock Waves & their

Applications”.

The symposium featured invited talks from distinguished speakers

from various institutions such as IIT Chennai, IIT Guwhati, IISc Bengaluru, BARC,

DRDL etc., and touched upon the emerging facets of research in the area of

shockwaves. Detailed discussions were held on topics such as “Study of Materials

Under Intense Shock Dynamic Loading”, “Heat Transfer and Force Measurement

Studies in Hypersonic Flows”, “Unimolecular HF Elimination of

Monofluorodimethylether and 1,2-difluorodimethyl- ether in the Temperature

Range of 800-1500K”, “Stress Analysis of Hydrogen Recombiner Test Chamber

(HRTC) for Shock Load due to Internal Explosion”, and “Shock Wave based

Therapeutic Device”. The final presentation of the day looked at the occurrences

of Tsunami and its impact on civilization.

National workshop on “Analytical and Numerical Solutions of Non-

LinearDifferential Equations- ANSNDE-2011”

The two day National workshop on ‘Analytical and Numerical

Solutions of Non-linear Differential Equations’ was held on 18th and 19th March

2011. The workshop was attended by 80 participants of whom 34 were from

various parts of the country and 46 from different parts of Karnataka. The event

was inaugurated with a ceremony presided over by the by guests Prof P.G.

Siddheshwar and Dr. P.S. Datti; the Correspondent, Br. Dhanraj Swamiji; Prof. C.G.S.

Sarma, Chairman, Department of ECE; and Dr. K.V. Nagaraja, Chairman, Dept. of

Mathematics. Dr. K.V. Nagaraja welcomed the gathering, followed by a key note

address of Prof P.G. Siddheshwar.

Two invited talks were scheduled on day one. The first speaker of the

day was Prof P.S. Datti of TIFR Bangalore. He spoke on solving Linear and Non-

Linear PDE using different transformation methods like Backlund Transformation

method, Point and Hodograph Transformation, Porous Medium Equation, Burger

Equation etc.

The next talk was by Prof. Pradeep G. Siddheshwar of Bangalore

University. In his talk, he emphasized the importance of mathematical modeling,

and its role in non-mathematical disciplines. He discussed the problems which

arise in non-linear equations such as the slipper bearing problem, flow due to a

stretching film, non-Darcy flow through porous media etc. He discussed the

Differential Transform and Homotopy based methods in great detail and stressed

the importance of Mathematica and Matlab. He called upon all researchers to be

tech-savvy and keep themselves abreast of the latest developments.
