  • Kayaking is a hugely popular activity in Krabi. The mangroves, caves & beaches provide plenty

    of great opportunities for paddling.

The beaches of Kong Hong never cease to amaze with their crystal clear water and stunning white sand. With two glorious beaches, a lagoon and national park land, this is a real island paradise.

A hike to Wat Tham Seua, otherwise known

as Tiger Cave Temple is exhausting, exhilarating and ultimately hugely

rewarding. Once youve climbed the 1,257 steps that lead to the hilltop temple, youll be met

by stunning views over the surrounding Thai

countryside having been transformed into swathes of lush greenery by the monsoon rain. Combine the temple with trips to other destinations like Sa Morakot or visit as a

separate Krabi Town day trip and combine with

    trips to the market.

The Krabi region has some of the finest scuba diving in the world with an incredible array

of marine life beneath the waves.

Colourful reef fish, turtles, rays, seahorses and even

the giant whale shark are all visitors here.

Krabi is among the Worlds best destinations for climbing. The Railay peninsula is home to the local climbing scene and is considered a Mecca for the sport.

There are hundreds of bolted routes in the Railay area as well as rock-climbing schools that can provide guides and equipment.

Railay, once the sole preserve of backpackers, has become a favourite holiday destination, combining 2 world class beaches, excellent dining and some stunning scenery.

The so called Emerald Pool is fed by a natural spring and gets its name from the glorious colour of its water. Perfect for swimming, there are also hot springs for soaking in.

Krabi and Ao Nang are blessed with

some great markets, with Krabi town

boasting the largest covered market in southern Thailand. Theres a market

somewhere every day of the week .

  • TSUNAMI EARLY-WARNING SYSTEM READY

Thailand now has the best warning system in Southeast Asia, eight years after the Andaman coast was ravaged by a devastating tsunami on Boxing Day in 2004.Before monstrous waves hit Thai shores and killed over 8,000 people in six provinces along the southern coast, no one knew the tsunami was coming.

All that will change with the early alert system and instruments installed by the National Disaster Warning Centre (NDWC) along the Andaman coast over the past eight years, backed by necessary regulations.

Within two minutes (after tsunami waves start to form), we can now calculate the speed and know exactly when they will reach the shore. Messages could be sent out immediately after the calculation, Captain Song Ekmahachai, chief of the NDWCs Disaster Warning and Dissemination Division said.

To prevent another disaster from an earthquake-driven tsunami, the NDWC has set up 136 warning towers and three tsunami-detection buoys in the Andaman Sea - one near the coast and two others in the deep sea.

When an abnormal tidal wave is detected, the buoys send data to the NDWC via satellite, where staff members work around the clock to monitor updates on computer screens.

Many will miss the opportunity to celebrate New Year and other festivals.

Somsak from the warning centre admitted the system could not save lives and damage without public cooperation.

If they do not run away from the big waves, no one can help them, he said. The only thing that can save you from a huge wave is running away to higher ground as fast as you can. Dont stop and waste your time taking a photo of the big wave. It will kill you, Somsak said.

sFALLING SATELLITE PIECES COULD LAND INPHANG-NGA

Boats and aircraft passing through the Andaman Sea region have been warned to watch out for parts of a satellite-launch vehicle falling to earth, the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) said yesterday.

The agency announced that at least one part of GSLV-D5-II, Indias Geosynchronous Satellite-Launch Vehicle, could fall very close to Thailand, because it will pass over Phang Nga, Surat Thani, Krabi, Phuket, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Trang and Phatthalung, during the launch of Indias communications satellite GSAT-14, between December 15 and January 14.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is set to launch the communication satellite from its Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) with the help of GSLV-D5-II. The launch vehicle will then break up and fall to earth. The launch date has not yet been finalised, as the ISRO has to take into account weather conditions and some other relevant factors.

The GISTDA confirmed that it received information about the satellite launch from the Indian government and used the information to project the launch trajectory.

We believe one of the falling parts from the satellite vehicle will fall about 260 kilometres off Phang Ngas coast and may be in an exclusive economic zone, the GISTDA said.

It has advised boats and planes to be on alert, if they are passing through, or are close to that particular zone. According to the GISTDA land-based people are not at risk. The GISTDA is said it was receiving regular updates from Indian government on its satellite-launch plan.

NEW THAI-CAMBODIAN JOINT VISA COMING SOON

Thailand and Cambodia agreed on Wednesday to implement a single visa agreement, which will enable tourists to obtain one visa to visit both countries from Dec 27.

The visa would allow visitors from 35 countries to stay up to 60 days in Thailand and 60 days in Cambodia. Tourists would be able to apply for the visa at embassies of either country.

The agreement comes under the Ayeyawady-Chao Phraya-Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy (Acmecs) framework.

  • BANGKOK TROUBLES AFFECT KRABI TOURISM

The local travel industry, including airlines, hotels and convention centres, have started to feel some impact from the current political chaos, which could hurt their financial performance in the final quarter of the year.

The drop in number of passengers has been caused by many factors, including more competitors, as well as the slow recovery of the world economy, particularly Europe, and the slower economies in Australia and India. The Chinese government is also quite strict in monitoring zero dollar tours. Meanwhile, the political conflict in Thailand is getting more intense, Chokchai said.

Thai AirAsia chief executive Tassapol Bijleveld said the political demonstrations had resulted in 34 governments issuing travel warnings, and that had affected the number of passengers using his airline as well. Its cabin factor in November dropped by 5 percentage points to 82 per cent compared with a year earlier. The market with the biggest drop was China.

Foreign tourists, especially Chinese, are quite concerned about the political demonstrations. If the situation remains intense, the tourism sector should be more sluggish. However, tourists might decide to go directly to local tourism destinations, such as Phuket, Krabi or Chiang Mai [and avoid Bangkok], or change to other countries instead, he said.

MEGA DJ PARTY GETS GO-AHEAD FOR NYE

A so-called mega-countdown event is back on after complaints by hotels and some guests booked at hotels nearby failed to sway authorities pull the permit.

Organised by Sydictive Element, 30 to 31 December and tagged the Sydictive Element World Class DJ Festival, the event was given the green light by local authorities according to a report in Phuket Gazette over the weekend.

The event had faced strong opposition from Surin beach hoteliers who feared they would lose high paying guests as the loud music would disturb the peace for hotel guests. However, Sydictive Element argued that activities on New Years Eve were traditionally noisy and there was a precedent for approving them.

Phuket Governor, Maitri Inthusut, supported the event after Mr Ma-ann announced that he had come to an agreement with the organisers. The governor initially feared that the event would cause beach vendors to lose business and residents would be disturbed by the noise and crowd. He suggested that the event be downsized to a more manageable size, as Sydictive originally expected the beach bash to attract about 50,000 revellers.Scaling down the party could provide an opportunity for beach vendors to work as usual and perhaps earn more. Furthermore, it will cause less of a disturbance to residents, he said.

Tourism Authority of Thailand Phuket Office director Chanchai Duangjit confirmed that his office was supporting Sydictives event on the condition that they could resolve concerns for vendors and local residents.

The Sydictive Element World Class DJ Festival claims Paris Hilton. She joined the press conference in Bangkok.

Ticket prices range from Bt1,000 to Bt5,000 for a one-day pass and from Bt4000 to Bt9,000 for a two-day pass.

  • activitieskoh lantascuba diving & snorkellingThere are no fewer than 19 dive operators on Koh Lanta and most of them - if not all - will be qualified to take first-timers out for a fully supervised scuba dive.

Dive sites nearby include the world-famous Phi Phi islands as well as the Koh Haa archipelago - all of which are within easy reach. The price you pay will generally include all equipment rental, lunch, fruits and drinking water and as a bonus, the dive sites and boats will be much quieter at this time of the year.

A lot of the dive operators speak a variety of European languages, so theres a good chance you can get an instructor that - quite literally - speaks your language.

If youre dead set on staying well and truly within reach of the waters surface, then snorkelling is the way forward and many of the dive boats also welcome snorkellers on board as well as divers.

thai cooking classesThai food in the west is generally quite expensive, creamy and toned down in comparison to what you find in this country. Here, in contrast, its very cheap, plentiful and packs much more of a punch. Learning to cook authentic Thai food in Thailand is about as good as it gets, and many of the kitchens are open-air or even on the beach front - just to add to the experience.

Classes are a great way to spend a morning or afternoon if the weather is a little wet for other outdoor activities, and you get to eat everything you make too - so you dont have to worry about whats for lunch!

rent a moped & exploreMopeds are everywhere in Thailand, and Lanta is no exception. Theyre cheap, easy to operate and are hard wearing.

In Saladan you can hire them absolutely everywhere. You might have to leave your passport with the rental agency, but dont worry - this is standard practice. Everyone does it. Its an insurance for them that youll bring the bike back, is all.Biking around Lanta is the best way to truly explore all its nooks and crannies, and you might even come across a few surprises along the way.

  • activitieshave a massageIf the thought of even standing upright is just to much - congratulations: you have successfully integrated into the Lanta way of life. If you have reached this point in your stay here, then its time for a massage.

If you have never had a Thai massage, youre in for a treat. Unlike the more traditional notion of a massage, the Thai version does not use soothing strokes as it rubs scented oils into your tired body. Oh no. It uses a pressure point method that means lots of hard pressing, twisting and cracking of joints!

But its not anywhere as bad as it might sound - otherwise no one would do it. Its invigorating and totally relaxing all at once, and after a hour of this, you feel like youve had a great workout and your body will be rid of any niggling aches and pains.

You can have it as hard or soft as you like - and your masseuse will usually ask you if the pressure she is using is ok for you, and will adjust accordingly. Probably one of the best things about getting a Thai massage in Thailand is its availability to everyone on any budget. You can choose to luxuriate in one of the breathtaking spas that Lanta has on her shores, or you can find a small massage hut somewhere. While the surroundings will not be on par with the spas, you can still get a great massage for a couple of hundred Baht, which cant be argued with.

help local animalsRated on TripAdvisor as the No.1 activity on Koh Lanta, Lanta Animal Welfare (LAW) is a non-profit organisation working to relieve the suffering of local animals through sterilization, vaccination and medical care.

Its sterilization and health centre, which currently cares for over 60 dogs and cats, is open daily to visitors who can tour the facility and meet the animals.

Whether youre interested in taking a dog for a stroll on the beach (some of the dogs love to swim!) or are happier cuddling one of the many affectionate cats, LAW is the place where you can get your furry fix while contributing to a worthwhile cause.

It would be a mistake. The food here is not what you might expect from a resort. No touristy bland curries here, oh no. With a Thai chef that has been doing his thing since a child and a Thai GM that has worked in the Waldorf Astoria, you can expect great things from the kitchen here. Thai food with class and bursting with flavour is fused with European classics such as prime steaks and fresh seafood platters to satsfy the mose discerning and demanding palates.

Start the evening with drinks and nibbles at the Crown Reggae Bar and head here for the main event with a spectacular view to boot.
