Local Chapter SpotlightsPurchase Area Chapter Pretty Busy!● During November Holly Bloodworth and Christina Grant went to Fulton County Schools and recruited

3 new members.● Two of the memberships were paid with funds from monies provided by the member voted support

stipend at the last board meeting. So very proud to have them join our chapter.● In our chapter board meeting in November, we planned to provide monthly Zoom professional

development opportunities for anyone to attend.● January's PD Zoom meeting presented a Dyslexia overview.● February's PD Zoom meeting discussed Sharon Draper's book Blended on Feb 20th from 3:45-4:30.● On March 26th, we will discuss culturally diverse literature.● On April 23rd, we will discuss Standards.

We certainly would like to see some friendly faces attend our free PD trainings offered via Zoom. Please contact Jamie Mahoney for more information on these Zoom PD opportunities. Happy learning from the Purchase Area Chapter!

Lake Cumberland Chapter UpdatesWe are currently planning our spring meeting to develop plans for the remainder of the school year and summer reading initiatives. Some things in the works are: ● Setting up a booth and promoting Imagination Library at the Wayne County Child Plus Fair in April● Providing assistance to local schools for spring Family Literacy Nights● Meeting with our local library to discuss summer reading programs● Meeting to set up mobile lending library with the “Meals on Wheels” program throughout the

summer● Supporting Little Lending Library locations● Bell Elementary Family Learning Night set for March 17th

Local Chapter Spotlights (cont’d)

Bluegrass Chapter● Currently we have a few openings on our board. We are looking for someone to take over

communications for Jen Hickman. We were sorry to see her go. We have some people who seem

interested in serving, but finding a convenient meeting time has proven to be a bit of a challenge.

● We submitted our application for Honor Council in December, 2019

● The high school student group completed the summaries of Blended in both English and Spanish and we

hope to use them for a possible event in March with Sharon Draper.

● Some of our members presented at the KCTE conference in February, 2020.

● Becky reached out to our and liaisons is waiting to hear back from them.

● Kerry Hancock will be giving a presentation about inferencing to a group of preschool parents on March

19, 2020.

● We are trying to work with Tates Creek Middle School to see if some of their students would like to do a

book study with Blended. I will be in contact with Rachel Kieffer about this.

● We are looking for a place to donate some books and other supplies to that is local.

Eastern Kentucky LIteracy Chapter

● Partnered to help host Sharon Draper at Madison Central● Sponsored a book club using the book Blended for students at Madison Central High School.● In the process of planning a spring meeting and recruiting officers for the next year

Greater Louisville Chapter: Many Voices for Literacy!November – April

● Members at Ramsey and Carrithers Middle School are conducting an after school book study with teen girls. Text: For BlackGirls Like Me by Miriama Lockington

January● Members Alicia Merton and Mary Morgan presented a learning event on the Sketchnote Strategy. Several KRA members

attended.● Imagination Library and Family Engagement Workshop - Danville KY; Alison Critchfield, Keith Lyons, (Greater Louisville

Member) Bonnie Lash Freeman conducted a 1 day session for 10-15 preschool teachers. They discussed dialogic reading and teachers introduced the strategy to family members.

February ● Attended a presentation by Matt Glover, “Already Ready, Nurturing Writers in Preschool and Kindergarten “

A GLLC member worked with students to create Spoken Word poetry for an African American Read-In at Ramsey Middle School

● African American Read-in the West End School with first grade and kindergarten classes.● Professional development session for teachers: Racial Equity in the Classroom

March● Collaborating with the Danville Independent District. A member is providing workshops for teachers on Writing with

Preschool Children.● Supporting middle school boys on a Men of Quality Lifestyle Choices Forum. Sessions include: Books and Bankroll, Respect,

and Career Options● Two members will be escorting teen girls to Atlanta, March 26-29, 2020. The girls will complete two literacy projects utilizing

text strategies from the book For Black Girls Like Me as a requirement to attend. January - March● A member conducts regular weekly tutoring sessions with kindergarten, first, and fifth grade students at Engelhard

Elementary SchoolMarch-April

● Member Charity Garnett has been using the book Blended for a 5th grade girls book club. This is in addition to the previousboy’s book club, #WeReadToo, with the Jason Reynolds book Ghost. The boys attended a play at Kentucky Center for the Arts based on the book.
