THE KPU MUSIC PROGRAMThe aspiring musician requires an environment that inspires and promotes individual creativity while developing solid skills and knowledge in all musical areas. The four-year Bachelor of Music in Musical Arts Program at KPU’s Langley Campus is designed to develop well-rounded and versatile musicians by cultivating the many facets of musicianship through a wide variety of academic and applied courses.

The KPU music program draws upon a variety of musical traditions, including Classical, Jazz, World, and Popular Music, to educate and train music students so that they may develop the skills, knowledge, and understanding that allows them to pursue their art wherever it may lead. Practical courses such as the Business of Music, Music Technology, Approaches to Music Education, Conducting, and Psychophysiology of Music Performance give this program an experiential dimension rarely found in traditional music programs. While offering the flexibility needed to meet students’ interests, the program develops strong performance skills through private lessons and ensembles.

For details about our program, please visit: kpu.ca/arts/music/programs

CAREER POTENTIALThe well-trained musician can pursue over one hundred and fifty professions that are directly or indirectly related to music. Through a judicious choice of courses and/or further study, B. Mus. graduates may pursue careers in a variety of music and music-related careers.

For a complete listing of over 150+ careers in music, go to: kpu.ca/arts/music/future-students/careers

PROFESSIONAL FACULTYKPU music faculty are highly experienced teachers, performers, and clinicians dedicated to developing the personal and artistic potential of each student. BOREALIS STRING QUARTET

The KPU Department of Music is proud to present their new partnership with the Borealis String Quartet. Beginning in May 2014, the Borealis String Quartet (BSQ) has served as String Quartet-in-Residence at KPU! One of the most dynamic and exciting world-class ensembles of its generation, the Borealis String Quartet has received international critical acclaim as an ensemble praised for its fiery performances, passionate style, and refined, musical interpretation. Founded in Vancouver, British Columbia in 2000 and rapidly establishing a stellar reputation, the Borealis has toured extensively internationally, performing to sold out audiences in New York, Washington, DC, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Rome, Mainz, Shanghai, Taipei, Beijing, Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa and, of course, in their home town of Vancouver. The Borealis is dedicated to bringing music to our local schools, with upcoming collaborations with the Langley Fine Arts, the Surrey Youth Symphony Orchestra and a String Festival series here at our own university. The Borealis are committed to bringing new, exciting programs and scholarships that prepare our students for greatness. KPU’s next generation of string musicians will have the extraordinary experience learning, engaging and playing with this amazing quartet—simply another one of the reasons KPU Music shines.

KPU CHAMBER MUSIC AND THE BSQ

Although the core of a university music education is centred on one-on-one instruction, the addition of chamber music to the training of young musicians is critical in developing a portfolio of skills that is essential for any young artist’s professional life.

KPU’s Music program has a strong history in supporting a student’s professional and artistic development by encouraging all students to participate in chamber ensembles. The demands of chamber music constantly challenge students to expand their boundaries of musical skill

and understanding. Simply, participation in chamber music elicits a new awareness and insights into what it means to perform. The experience fosters a deep learning that comes with the challenge of creating within an ensemble setting.

The KPU Music department is thrilled to have the Borealis String Quartet as part of this tradition. The professional insights and musical expertise this internationally acclaimed string quartet offers will enhance students’ learning and development that expands well

beyond performance.

MUSIC PROGRAM ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Audition/Interview Applicants will receive an invitation to demonstrate their musical and technical skills in an audition, which will take place in March/May. Alternative audition dates are possible for students who live outside the Greater Vancouver Region and who cannot attend in person. For those who have completed the university application process by the specified deadline, late auditions may be held in August, subject to seat availability.

For all instruments except piano, the standard of practical work expected at the time of the audition is equivalent to Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) Grade 6. The entrance standard for piano is equivalent to RCM Grade 10. Applicants do not need to possess a certificate or diploma to apply to the KPU music program. The grades listed are only used as a reference to the level applicants should be at if they are to get the most out of the program.

For more details regarding audition requirements, please visit: kpu.ca/arts/music/future-students/auditions

A Satisfactory Score on the KPU Music Placement Test The placement test assesses the knowledge and skill of the applicant in music theory, music history, and aural musicianship (i.e. ear training). The results will help determine the best point of entry for prospective students. Applicants who have successfully completed the RCM Advanced Rudiments Examination in Theory, or Conservatory Canada, Theory IV, may be exempt from writing the theory section of the placement test upon presentation of the certification of completion before the day of the audition. Applicants who have successfully completed the RCM History 1 Examination may be exempt from writing the history section of the placement test upon presentation of the certification of completion before the day of the audition.

For more details regarding the Placement Test, please visit: kpu.ca/arts/music/future-students/auditions#placement-test

**Note: Students wishing to complete the B. Mus program without having to undertake any preparatory English courses must enter with English 12 with a C+ grade or the equivalent. Please make an appointment with an Arts Degree Advisor to plan your course selections accordingly.

TRANSFER STUDENTS (CREDIT FOR PREVIOUS LEARNING)

APPLICATIONS

Applicants, such as students applying to transfer from music programs at other post-secondary institutions, may be eligible for advanced standing in the B. Mus Program. All applications for transfer credits will be assessed on an individual basis. Applicants with significant professional experience in the music industry may acquire credits through Prior Learning Assessment (PLA).

Admission to the music program is based on the music faculty’s assessment of a student’s musical interests, experience, present level of achievement, and potential. An audition, interview, grades achieved in previous studies, and letters of recommendation are all important factors in this assessment. Each application is individually evaluated, and there is no set formula for weighing the components of assessment. Applicants may be admitted with weaknesses in musical knowledge or in performance, but such deficiencies must be made up. Faculty, in consultation with the student, will develop a suitable program of study.

After your application has been received, the Music Department will contact you for an audition, interview, and placement test.

Intake of music students generally occurs only in September. Since there are many applicants for a limited number of spaces, we encourage all students to apply as early as possible.

HOW TO APPLYGo to: kpu.ca/future-students/admissions/applying
