OPEN LEARNING: For those parents involved in Open Learning, I am sure you will agree that the program now in its second year, is running very smoothly and all children are very engaged in their Maths learning. Open Learning is a whole school Maths program where children work in their ability groups on key numeracy skills at their individual level of ability. Their levels are determined by a pre-test that has been developed by the classroom teachers. Each child has their own “Learning Ladder” that they work through and as they complete their post-test, their skills are marked off and they progress to the next level. It is truly wonderful to see parents, integration aides and teachers working side by side to help our children achieve their potential in this program. We have some students working two to three levels above their expected level and others who need that extra support working at lower levels. But what is truly inspiring is when you hear a comment as I did this week from one student whom I saw struggling to understand a basic concept last week announce excitedly “Mrs Van Lambaart, I’ve got it now! I know how to order from smallest to biggest with decimal points – it’s not that hard anymore!” I would like to congratulate my whole staff and those parents involved for making this such a positive learning experience for everyone. As you can imagine it takes a great deal of pre planning and organisation to make it all happen thanks in no small part to our Curriculum Coordinator Jacqui Cutler. Please feel free if you have some spare time on a Tuesday morning to come in and observe the program happening in action and of course, everyone is welcome to come along and help out. PLAY IS THE WAY: As you are all aware, our Welfare and Discipline policy is based on Wilson McCaskill’s program “Play is the Way”, with our Golden Rule “ Treat Others as you would like to be Treated” as the premise for everything that we do at Nar Nar Goon Primary School. This week, as part of the program, the teachers will commence talking to the children about the concept of Failure ie: Failure is Good Medicine.” Wilson states: “Resilience is the ability to bounce back from failure. Unpleasant as failure may be, it is the essential ingredient in the recipe for developing resilience. Quite simply, you can’t cope with failure or bounce back from it, if you don’t experience it in the first place. Unfortunately we have been duped into believing that giving our children easy and endless success will inflate their self-esteem to the point that failure will fail to dent it. Just as you can’t get fit without exercising, you can’t become resilient without encountering and overcoming failure. Put simply: Failure is good medicine and any child given the right dose, during their formative years, is more than ready to ride the roller coaster of life.” It would be terrific if you as parents, had a similar conversation with your children to support them in understanding this very important life lesson. If you would like more information please feel free to speak to any of the teachers or ask them for a copy of the Wilson McCaskill professional reading where this information was taken from. CHESS COMPETITION: Ms Greenaway has been working with a group of interested students to learn the game of Chess during lunchtimes throughout the week. She will shortly be selecting a group to take to Beaconsfield Primary School to compete in the first round competition of our Chess Tournament. This Tournament involves four schools: Beaconsfield, Upper Beaconsfield, Pakenham Hills and Nar Nar Goon. At the end of competition period the winning school is awarded a perpetual trophy and the champion chess player is also awarded an individual trophy. I would like thank Ms Greenaway for her willingness to give up her lunch hours to support the children in this very worthwhile competition. Chess is certainly a game of strategy and critical thinking. I look forward to providing you with the results of our first round of the 2016 competitions. NAR NAR GOON TALENT SHOW: At this year’s Twilight Carnival, the children are being invited to compete in the Nar Nar Goon Talent Show. Mr Tolliday is coordinating this show, with already well over 20 entries received. It is wonderful to see so many children at recess and lunch practising their dances/ singing/ magic performances in the alcoves around the school. It will be a great spectacle to watch while the Twilight Carnival is taking place on the Foundation classroom decking as per our End of Year Event. I hope to see lots of families and friends sharing a hot dog or two and watching the children as they perform. Thank you to Mr Tolliday for his organisation of this Talent Show. Kind Regards, Mrs Fran Van Lambaart 40 kph In Spencer Street At All Times

For those parents involved in Open Learning, I am sure you will agree that the program now in its second year, is running very
