The town has pulled out all the stops with an interesting line-up of summer events to en- sure residents and visitors are kept enter- tained. Dancing barefoot in the sand to music played by South Africa’s top artists, surfing at the main beach, golfing and fishing are all on the festive menu. At the top is Billy’s Beach, which will be abuzz with festivities from 16:00 to midnight each day from December 26 to 31 and on Janu- ary 2 - except for New Year’s Eve. Festival-goers will be entertained by multi- skilled folk sensation Jeremy Loops, SA’s pre- miere electronic duo Goldfish, Al Bairre, Good Luck and various top local DJ’s. “Going into its third year, Billy’s Beach is a well-recognised brand that has attracted a strong following of party-goers between the ages of 21 and 35 over the years, and is draw- ing people to St Francis Bay from all over South Africa,” says event organiser Laureen Payne. Billy’s Beach is the brainchild of St Francis Bay locals, Ryan Christy and Shaun Payne, who saw the need for a summer outdoor enter- tainment event. Their aim is to ensure that visitors have an enjoyable experience in a safe, secure and unique venue, as well as to party and dance barefoot in the sand to music played by SA’s top musicians. The festival will provide a welcome eco- nomic injection for St Francis Bay, as last year’s festival attracted over 6 000 people. “Billy’s Beach supports the existing market and is bringing a new audience to the town,” says Payne. “Everyone on the Billy’s Beach crew is a resident who wants to support their commu- nity. We are employing over 40 local staff members from the township and use local suppliers and brands, such as Billabong, in partnerships. “This year we have the support of over 80 local businesses, who benefited from having Billy’s Beach in town last year. We want this to be a fixed asset to the town, not a fly-by- night event.” Festival-goers can also look forward to am- ple sporting events, as well as entertainment and family activities including the Cape St Francis Resort Charity Fun Run, the Super- spar Fun Run, the Port St Francis Triathlon, a Penguin Golf Day at the St Francis Golf Course, the NSRI Golf Day, surfing lessons on the main beach with Leonard Payne and a Christmas Fishing Competition. Cobs Cove will offer a variety of music over the season, including top musicians PHFAT and A-King.

Hy is diemanwat ’n klag teen diemunisipa-

EMERGING business people from aroundKouga gathered at theKougaCulturalCen-tre last week for an SMME Imbizo.

The Imbizo, called the Rural OutreachFocus, was jointly organised byKougaMu-nicipality and SEDA Nelson Mandela Bayand specifically targeted small, mediumand micro enterprises. The purpose of the event was to inform

existing and aspiring SMMEs, entrepre-neurs and cooperatives how stakeholderssuch as Kouga Municipality, SEDA and

others can be of assistance to them.Oliphant urged his audience not always

to target the obvious and already over-pop-ulated business ventures such as cateringwhen there is a sea of opportunities to beexplored.Among other stakeholders that joined

SEDA for presentations were the NationalYouth Development Agency (NYDA), De-partment of EconomicDevelopment, Envi-ronmental Affairs and Tourism, SarahBaartman District Municipality and theDepartment of Trade and Industry.

LIFE Isivivana Private Hospital celebratestheir tenth anniversary this month - the East-ern Cape’s oldest private public partnership.

The Eastern Cape Department of Healthrecognised the potential for the establish-ment of a private facility in partnership withthe existing Humansdorp District Hospital. This was mainly aimed around optimally us-ing the available human and equipment re-sources within Humansdorp to enjoy re-source sharing, and thus to optimally providehealth services to the community, coveringboth the State and the private sectors.

“With an initial investment of R13.5 millionfrom Life Healthcare and R1.5 million from theEastern Cape Department of Health, this part-nership was the first for the Eastern Cape andis the first co-location PPP in South Africa,”says Life Healthcare regional manager BorderKei and Port Elizabeth, Bruce Janssens.

“Our 33 bed hospital opened in November2004 with eleven permanent nurses. On No-vember 4, 2004, Dr Sean Plaatjies admitted thefirst patient to Life Isivivana Private Hospi-tal. The first baby was born on November 30,2004. Now, 10 years later, we have made lifebetter for just over 21 500 patients.”

Resa Kruger, nurse manager of Life Isiviva-na, and Queenie Karolisin hold the distinc-tion of being the only two staff members tohave been at the hospital since the beginning.

“Going forward, we aim to continue to ex-pand the services that we provide to the com-munity and hope to be able to introduce newinitiatives, possibly mobile clinics operatingout of Life Isivivana to take health servicesto the outlying areas. This could be in termsof eye clinics, antenatal awareness and train-ing clinics,” says Janssens.

“To be in a position, both financially andresource wise to undertake these initiatives,we will require joint cooperation from theState facility, the DoH, and most importantlythe buy-in and support of the doctors thatservice the community and the hospitals.

“In addition, we are actively trying to se-cure specialist cover in Humansdorp to sup-port the general practitioners, as well as toallow for patients that require minor surgeryto be treated within Humansdorp and not berequired to travel to Port Elizabeth or else-where.”

To this end three new specialists are goingto be joining Life Healthcare in January 2015.They are Dr Ivor Peterson (orthopaedic sur-

geon), Dr Jacques September (specialist sur-geon) and Dr Filile Nomvete (gastro-enterolo-gist).

This in addition to Dr Emile Coetzee, colo-rectal surgeon. They are also in discussionswith a specialist anaesthetist.
