History

Koszalin also called Koszalice, Koeslin, Cussalitz, Coeslin,Cosalitz, Scurgum, was a site of pagan worship in Prehistory. It was established as a city in the XIIth century. First it was only a small place butwith time its importance grew and it became one of therichest cities of Middle Pomerania. Its success wasconnected with the proximity to the Baltic Sea andJamno lake, and numerous merchant routes crossingin Koszalin. Now it is a popular resort visited by tourists who spendtheir time at the seaside.

A green city

Koszalin has over 105,000 inhabitants and covers 83 square kilometres ofa picturesque land with four parks, River Dzierżęcinka flowing through thecity centre and also with the old Chełmska Hill rising up to 137 metresabove sea level. Koszalin is often called the green city owing to its uniquecharacter - it is a real oasis of nature, where almost 40 % of the total cityarea is occupied by green areas, parks and forests.

Events

The following events are held, among other things in Koszalin: International Days of Percussion Music (March); International Koszalin Days (May); “Young People and Cinema” Festival,(June); www.mlodziifilm.pl International Festival of Organ Music, World Festival of Polonian Choirs with gala concerts held in the amphitheatre

Many events are held in the amphitheatre having 5000 seats under roof. During brightsummertime days the Koszalin Philharmonic Orchestra gives open-air concerts inthe park near the amphitheatre.

The Koszalin museum is proud of the most extensive collection ofPomeranian archeological items from the neolitic to medievalages. Besides, it has a collection of modern art.
