The Majjhima Nikaya, or “Middle-length Discourses” of the Buddha

THE MAJJHIMA NIKAYA is the second collection of the Buddha’s discourses found in the Sutta Piṭaka of the Pali Canon.

The Majjhima Nikāya consists of 152 suttas. These are divided into three parts called Sets of Fifty (paṇṇāsa), though the last set actually contains fifty-two suttas.

Blessed One was living at Kosambı̄! in Ghosita’s Park.

What it is happened in there : - Now on that occasion the bhikkhus at Kosambı̄ 9 had taken to quarrelling and brawling and were deep in disputes, stabbing each other with verbal daggers.

They could neither convince each other nor be convinced by others; they could neither persuade each other nor be persuaded by others.

The Noble disciple are the Six Qualities of cordiality that create love and respect, and conduce to cohesion, to non-dispute, to concord, and to unity.

Six Qualities :- 1. bodily actions of loving kindness

towards co-associates in the holy life openly and secretly.

2 verbal actions of loving kindness towards co-associates in the holy life openly and secretly.

Six Qualities :-

5.. The virtues that are not broken, fissured or spotted, are consistent and praised by the wise as unaffected and conductive to concentration.

6. Again the bhikkhu becomes equal with the co-associates in the holy life in the noble view that leads to the beyond. Which rightfully shows the destruction of unpleasantness to one who thinks logically.

1. first knowledge attained :- There is no obsession unabandoned in myself that might so obsess my mind that I cannot know and see things as they actually are. My mind is well disposed for wakening to the truths.

2. second knowledge attained :- ‘When I pursue, develop, and cultivate this view, I personally obtain serenity, I personally obtain quenching.

3. third knowledge attained :-‘There is no other recluse or brahmin outside the Buddha’s Dispensation possessed of a view such as I possess.’

Noble disciple is thus possessed of seven factors :-

4. fourth knowledge attained :- ‘I possess the character of a person who possesses right view.’

5. fifth knowledge attained :- ‘I possess the character of a person who possesses right view.’

6. sixth knowledge attained :- ‘I possess the strength of a person who possesses right view.’

7. seventh knowledge attained :- ‘I possess the strength of a person who possesses right view.’

Analyse : -

acts, words and thoughts of goodwill, sharing all things with ones fellow celibates, living the higher life in its entirety, following the doctrine that leads to the destruction of ill, and introspection, which leads to the realisation of truth.

“When a noble disciple is thus possessed of seven factors, he has well sought the character for realisation of the fruit of stream-entry.

Conclusion :-The Kosambians. During the period when the bhikkhus at Kosambi are divided by a dispute, the Buddha teaches them the six qualities that create love and respect and conduce to unity. He then explains seven extraordinary knowledge possessed by a noble disciple who has realised the fruit of stream-entry
