he total production amount in

2019 marked USD 6B, which is a

27.9% increase compared to last

year. Commercial aircraft parts

production, including Boeing and Airbus parts

(29%), MRO (19%), and KUH programs (12%)

make up 60% of total sales. The rest are T-50

programs (9%), KF-X programs (8%), engine

parts (7%), and space programs (5%).

Inclusion of MRO production rate (USD 880M),

due to the change of statistical standards,

accounts for the increase of total production.

In addition, sales resulted from full-fledged

start of KF-X development, MUAV (Mid-altitude

Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) development,

increased engine parts production, initiation

of various satellite development programs

and KSLV-II were all major contributors of this

increase in total production.

KUH production reached its high point in

2019, marking USD 700M, owing to additional

production of Surion Helicopters and smooth

progression of its derivative programs.

Production scale is forecasted to reach USD

800M in 2020, a 19% increase compared

to last year. KF-X program, which entered

its formal development phase, reached

USD 500M in production, a 36% increase

compared to last year. In 2020, it is estimated

that the number will grow and reach USD

760M in production. Once production begins,

it is forecasted that the KF-X program will be

the leading growth factor in the local military

aircraft business. The T-50 production

ratio dropped 15%, marking USD 510M in

production. It is expected to shrink and hit

USD 190M point in 2020. Forecast says that

amount of production for LAH/LCH, which

development phase will end in 2020, will

reduce from USD 80M (2019) to USD 70M

in 2020. Despite of this drop, growth in this

sector is anticipated in year 2020 when LAH

production starts.

Though the commercial a ircraft parts

production saw 6% growth in 2019, reaching

USD 1.7B, it is forecasted to shrink to USD 1.6B

in 2020 due to delay in aircraft certification.

Certification is required to resolve safety

issues of B737 MAX fleet, Boeing’s best

sell ing aircraft. Events that can not be

visualized through statistics, like aircraft order

cancellation or delaying from airliners due to

COVID-19, may cause adverse effects on the

2020 market forecast for commercial aircraft

parts.

Owing to the change of statistical standard,

the inclusion of the total amount of production

for MRO caused an increase of local MRO

market more than threefold in 2019, from

USD 300M (2018) to USD 1.1B. Local MRO

market is forecasted to grow continuously, as

the number of large commercial aircraft under

possession increased.


Though space sector grew 64% in comparison

to last year, it only makes up 5% of the overall

aerospace business. Still, future is bright for

the space business due to actively pursued

programs in regard to KSLV-II and Mid-size

satellite.

In case of UAV business, production rate grew

35% in 2019 and hit USD 140M point due to

increase in overall production of various UAV.

Forecast says that UAV business will reach

USD 200M in the year 2020. (Table 1, Figure 1)

For export amount per country, US (47%) and

Europe (24%) make up 71% of total export,

while Iraq and Thailand make up 12% and 7%

respectively.(Figure 2)

As a result of increased production rate of

military aircraft end products, such as T-50,

KF-X, KUH, and LCH/LAH in 2018, military

business exceeded the commercial sector

in terms of production. Through contribution

of large aircraft heavy maintenance business

in the statistics, commercial production in

2019 constituted 55% of overall production.

In 2019, military sector take up 46%, which

was lowered compared to last year’s 55%, in

the Republic of Korea aerospace business.

However, the ratio shows big discrepancy

w h e n c o m p a r e d w i t h g l o b a l a ve r a g e

percentage share in the field of military

aerospace business (lower than 20%).

As the local commercial aerospace business

expands from being airframe-focused in the

past to engine parts, commercial aircraft

MRO, and avionics area, it is forecasted that

percentage share of commercial sector will

experience gradual growth in the overall

aerospace business. (Table 2, Figure3)

Compared to last year, 2019 contract award

rate declined 22.9%, marking USD 5.7B.

Balance lowered only by a little, marking USD

25.4B. Major reasons for this decline are due

to the delays in both commercial aircraft

production and defense program initiations.

The projection for the 2020 contract award

rate will increase by 6.2% at an estimated

USD 6.1B. (Table 3)

Trade balance reached a record of USD

400M in 2017, which was the first time in 8

years when the balance was below USD 1B.

Since then, the trade deficit expanded for

2 consecutive years, reaching USD 2.4B in

2019, which is a 62% increase compared to

last year. The main cause of this trade deficit

expansion is the rapid increase (more than

twofold) of 2019 finance for introducing

foreign commercial aircraft (USD 2.8B), which

budget was reduced to USD 1.3B back in

2017. It is forecasted that export and import

of aircraft parts will reach USD 2.6B and USD

2.4B respectively in 2020, a slight increase

compared to the previous year, as local

aircraft manufacturing business is showing

both continuity and stability while on a rising

curve. However, due to reduced rate of aircraft

delivery and returning of leased aircraft as a

result of prolonged COVID-19, both export

and import value may decrease. (Table 4)

N u m b e r of w o r ke r s a t t h e a e ro s p a c e

sector increased 18.7% in 2019, reaching

total of 17,574. It was the first time since

aerospace industry was counted towards

statistics when the total number of workers

exceeded 15,000. Inclusion of the C-check

work force (1,807 ppl) was the main cause

of this increase. Increased R&D personnel

due to full scale initiation of KF-X program

and augmented employment of production

workers, as a result of increased export of

commercial aircraft parts, are all considered

as the main contributors to the increase of

total aerospace work force. Owing to the

smooth progression of various satellite

programs, such as KSLV-II, geostationary orbit

complex satellite, mid-size satellite, and next

generation satellite development, work force

at the space sector exceeded 900 in 2018 for

the first time, and continued its upward trend

to reach 950 in 2019. With the help from KF-

X, LCH/LAH development program and KUH

production, 2020 aerospace work force is

forecasted to reach 18,000, which is a slight

increase compared to 2019. (Table 5)
