Ethnographic Research / InterviewThe social relationship between people and animals was picked as a pilot interaction model. Target groupinterviews were conducted to understand which traits and attributes came into play.

Hamilton approached Design Continuum to design a new GUI for HAMILTON-S1 with INTELLiVENT®-ASV that is the world’s first fully automatic application for intensive care ventilation.

The project started in September 2009, and product’s market launch was made in August 2010. It is also nominated as one of three finalists for Swiss Technology Award in 2011.

This research was conducted as the graduation project within the context of Master of Science program at Istanbul Technical University.

It focused on Human-Service Robot interaction, particularly the interaction between iRobot Roomba and the domestic environment in Italy.

The activities were launched in mid January and continued till the end of May 2010.

What is Roomba?

iRobot Roomba is a “robotic floor vacuum” with high level of mobility that allows it to clean the floor as going along within the domestic environment.

The Roomba was introduced in 2002; over 2.5 million units have been sold as of January 2008. Several updates and new models have been released that allow the Roomba to better negotiate obstacles and optimize cleaning.

DAILY ACTIVITIES

Research Questions

What are impacts of the domestic service robot on the traditional tools used for the same task and activity?

What is the communication level of the domestic service robot with people?

How much does the domestic service robot influence daily habits and routines?

What are the counter-effects between the domestic environment and the domestic service robot?

Which features and attributes turn an object into a robot?

Conclusion - Summary

In conclusion, the cumulative analysis of both surveys and interviews reveals that Roomba causes drastic changes on cleaning activities, and it creates strong emotional bonding with its owners.

On the other hand, Roomba does not bring forth long-term engagements regarding cleaning products and environmental structure.

The last part of analysis points out three main topics about the general robot concept in Italian society. Those are the importance of robots’ visible movements, the references communicated with the intelligence of robots and the relationship between generations and robots’ reliability concept.

The ObsITI website is aimed to describe and promote the Observational Immune Tolerance Induction research program.

As one of the sponsors of the study, Octapharma AG, a Swiss based company, asked Continuum to help develop this topic specific web site.

Project Manager / DesignerDesign ContinuumMilan, May 2010

6

Page 64: Koray Ozsoy Portfolio - November 2012 U-P-I

64

Challenge #1The client strongly recommended Continuum to pick the ObsITI study brochure as the base concerning the visual language (including colors, page architecture and the overall theme) and the content of the upcoming website. They also defined the target group as healthcare personnel.

Challenge accepted !

Challenge #2Although the team offered other content management system alternatives, which are considered to be more user-friendly and easier, the client did not want to change their current one; "typo3“, as they were already familiar with it.

Challenge accepted !

So, the team started to follow a series of steps of “informed” interaction design that contains secondary source research, initial GUI architectures & concept proposals, refinement of the selected direction, document & prototype and deployment of the web site.
