2 - MSBCA NEWSLETTER - OCTOBER 2017

Dear members and friends of MSBCA,

Now begins the new year of our Board and I am pleased to announce we are joined by

Wei Wei Teng as Secretary and Charan Kaur as a General Committee member.

Wei Wei and Charan have been very active in our community, volunteering at many events throughout the past year, building new relationships, and connecting with members. Being a board member is a very social position. To me, I notice Wei Wei’s strengths in her energy, her enthusiasm, and her eagerness to help. I notice Charan’s strengths in the intensity of her ideas, her spread of fun to others, and her passion for life. Both Wei Wei and Charan will be joining a team that has shown itself to be dynamic, diverse and creative in the past year.

Additionally, I would like to thank Mr. Paul Teoh for his services as auditor to our association. As auditor, Paul has reviewed the annual financial statements faithfully and diligently for the past ten years and more. He has worked with many different Boards and continues to be an excellent source of wisdom and knowledge. I also count Paul as a friend and have often asked him for advice on how the club is doing and what the club, or myself, or both, should be focusing on. His guidance is always reliable and true. For all these things and more,

I truly give Paul the fullest gratitude on behalf of the association.

Thank you also to Ms. Lita Chan and Ms. Genevieve Lai who have been appointed our two auditors for this year.

In September, Kopitiam was a brilliant new event to showcase Malaysian, Singaporean and Bruneian cultures to Calgary. In a style similar to Taste of Calgary, many members, friends, and strangers came to taste many traditional delights of SE Asia. Some found out through our mass media and online presence, some heard by word of mouth, and some read our posters scattered around Chinatown!

The comments and feedback we’ve received were overwhelmingly positive. Thank you sincerely to all volunteers who made this possible and who dedicated their time and energy into showing others how and what we cook! This culinary tasting experience will likely be seen again…

Members and friends, last year MSBCA attempted another new event. We called it a “Friendly Singing Competition” and it was held in our clubhouse in partnership with the Chinese Canadian Petroleum Society. Talented contestants from MSBCA and the CCPS performed in front of judges. Prizes were given out. It was a very fun event and a full house. This year, we wish to broaden our outreach and focus in on a specific goal to raise awareness for.

This December 2nd, MSBCA will host “Shall We Sing 2017”, a singing competition fundraiser open to all the public in our

clubhouse. Talented singers, both member and non-member of MSBCA, may apply to be on the list of contestants. The net proceeds of this event will be donated equally to the Calgary Urban Project Society (CUPS) and MSBCA’s Kids and Youth program.

Our fundraiser committee has decided upon these two recipients for various reasons that may resonate with us all. CUPS is a local social program for individuals and families struggling with poverty and trauma. It encompasses services such as housing, education, and healthcare. MSBCA’s kids and youth require community engagement, education, and peer-to-peer and elder-to-peer support through various activity and programs. One day they may grow to be active members of our community and it will be their ideas that will be the future of MSBCA.

So, therefore, I invite everybody to attend our inaugural Shall We Sing 2017.

JONATHAN LOOI

Story by Rebecca/ Cara Yee Photos by Jonathan Looi

On September 17, children and adults came to the club and learned how to make a chinese lantern. The lanterns that we made were shaped like a fish and templates were provided.. We traced the template with the wire to create a frame of a fish. Two fish frames were needed to make the lantern. After the frames were created, we then glued the cellophane sheet to cover the frames. There were several colors to choose from with there being red, white, purple, blue and green sheets. Then the two frames

were connected using a wire which also doubled as a candle or tea light holder. The next step is to use a paint brush to draw fish scales, eyes, gills, and mouth for added detail. Finally, a string was fastened to a flower stick and the other end was tied to the fish lantern. This was a fun craft to make. I was excited to learn how to make a lantern and took pride making it. Hang these cute lanterns around the house for Mid Autumn Festival. Lastly, I would like to thank Helen for putting and organized this event.

14 - MSBCA NEWSLETTER - OCTOBER 2017

Unknowingly, our first Kopitiam event on Saturday, September 30 so happened to coincide with Alberta Culture Days weekend. This was fitting because many cultures including ours love to showcase food as a way to introduce and share culture. Having the event at our very own clubhouse and making full use of our commercial size kitchen, not only saved us cost but also gave us an opportunity to show our visitors our home in Chinatown. It was a no entrance fee no ticket event. No reservations were taken for this standing-only take-out food sample event. Each kopitiam food item had between 30-70 samples.

Our food sample tapas style included satay, nasi lemak, char kway teow, kolo mee, Hainanese chicken rice, loh bak, roti chanai, rojak, kaya toast+kopi, chee cheong fun, chendol and kuih-kuih. These are

some of the common foods one can find in a typical coffee shop (kopitiam) when visiting Malaysia, Singapore or Brunei. Ingredients used to prepare the food are all of top quality and home style prepared. The challenge with our style of food is always the preparation time and the amount of ingredients example spices required. The chefs were very passionate about the taste so some of the spices used had to be the ones that can only be found in SE Asia so chefs had to used their own personal items they brought from home. All tapas selling at $3 per item was only to recover cost rather than making a profit. Sharing our food knowledge is one form of culinary art MSBCA wants to bridge between the East and West and bring our cultures closer together. Kopitiam is an event where MSBCA gave back to the Calgary community.

Similar to all our other events we would not be able to carry through successfully without help from many volunteers. Many good chefs and volunteers came forward to help make this event happen. We had 19 volunteers for Friday night preparation work and another 35 volunteers for Saturday’s main event. Among the volunteers there were 9 lead chefs each specializing in their kopitiam food. We are thankful some non-members came forward to lend a hand. MSBCA hoped all who attended had a good food tasting time and we thanked you for coming out to spend some high tea time with us on a Saturday.

OCTOBER 2017 - MSBCA NEWSLETTER - 15

Saturday, November 25, 8 PMDark skies are important to us and we would like to share dark skies with you.

In the sky - Check out the vain and boastful queen of the northern sky Cassiopeia under a sliver of a moon.

***Open House - Gates open at 8:00pm and the event runs until 11:00pm Admission $30 (all proceeds go towards Rothney Astrophysical Observatory educational programs)The RAO is located on hwy 22, east side of the hwy, 2.4 km south of the hwy22 and hwy 22X interchange. At every open house we feature a ‘what’s up’ in the sky’ presentation and our telescopes operating with astronomers ready to answer your questions. Bring your flashlight and dress for the weather.

• The RAO will be opens to the public during open house events. During the rest of the month we conduct school and youth group programming.

• Open House events are a drop in, there is no requirement to pre-register.

• Gates open at 8pm until 11pm.• Entrance fee: $30 per car. All proceeds go towards our

educational programming. We welcome these donations to our educational programs. Please note that the entrance fee to open house events is now $30 per car effective at the September, 2017 open house. The RAO provides programs that explore sky science, light, optics and space exploration. The RAO also offers programming for youth groups including Scouts and Guides. We are your guide to the universe with programs that are offered during the day or in the evening and your support is greatly appreciated.

• We accept cash, debit, or credit.• Parking is limited and we encourage you to carpool.• When you arrive at the observatory, please follow directions

from parking attendants.• Talks are held inside the interpretive centre classroom and

there may be outdoor sky tours if the weather permits.• Please, please, please slow down and watch your step while

outside on the observatory grounds. The site is very dark and there several places where there is uneven ground. Take your time and watch your step.

• We have a small giftshop which sells packaged snacks, pop and water.

• The observatory is wheelchair accessible, however, please be advised there is uneven ground, limited parking and unlit areas.

• Observing with the telescopes depends on the weather. The telescopes see the same light as you. If there are clouds in the sky or too much humidity we are not able to use the telescopes. You can check our all sky camera before you head out to the observatory. It is located on the home page of this website and it provides current observing conditions.

• Telescopes are in the observatory buildings as well as on the terrace on the south side of the interpretive centre. Looking through a telescope is a fine art. Please only use your eyes and do not touch the telescopes. A slight touch on a telescope will change its alignment. Talk with astronomers about what you can see is in the telescope and what you should be looking for, we love your questions.

• There is No flash photography inside the domes.• Children are welcome. The event is open to families and people

of all ages. The telescope viewing and activities are geared towards children eight years old and up. Please note that the ground and walkways are very uneven so it is difficult to maneuver a stroller.

• Flashlights are welcome, red is preferred which allows you to maintain your night vision and does not affect the telescopes. If you do have a white light flashlight, we ask that you try your best to keep the light on the ground. The bright light of a flashlight aimed at someone’s eyes in the dark can be painful and also the bright light makes it difficult to see through the telescopes.

• If you have any questions or concerns during the open house, please bring them to the front desk located in the Interpretive Centre and we will do our best to assist you.

• The Rothney Astrophysical Observatory is owned and operated by the University of Calgary. The observatory site is private land and we are only open to the public during the posted event times.

Story by Ellie Cheong Photos by Jonathan Looi

This story is about the lanterns we made at MSBCA on September 17, 2017. Everybody there made a lantern. The lanterns were all fishes. My mom (Helen) was the teacher. I was a helper because I already did mine at home, so I could teach the others and help them. My big sister helped paint my fish. The materials were glue bottles, scissors, transparent/see through papers (that you can only find it in Malaysia and Singapore) and wires. Everyone who came had a good time there. Then we all took some pictures and showed off our lanterns to our parents with the room lights turned off, and the battery operated candle in the lantern lighted.
